Apollo Bay Backpackers Lodge

Upon arriving we were met by a grumpy guy at the desk who made us feel like he was really going out of his way to let us stay. He was really rude and not welcoming at all, tried some friendly chit chat with him because it was so awkward, but got nothing. When he gave us our keys, he told us that we were staying in an apartment that we were sharing with another group - this is the first we heard about this, we thought we had booked a private apartment. He then told us we didn't have a car park because we got there too late (5pm) and that the others in our apartment had got in first - we ended up wedging our car behind the theirs (so we didn't have to park in the street) but were worried that they might want to leave early the next morning, so were up early ourselves to make sure the car wasn't blocking them in.

Place was reasonably clean, but sharing with the others was a real surprise - I've stayed in lots of backpackers and am used to sharing, but when you have booked and paid for what you think is a private apartment, it was a bit annoying - especially seeing that neither the shower or the bathroom door had locks on them. I was there with my girlfriend, and they others in the other room were a bunch of guys, so needles to say she wasn't comfortable with the arrangement - luckily they were out most of the time. Also the wall between the bedroom and the toilet was so thin, that we could hear them breathing in there.

Kitchen was fine, but not keen on the idea of having to wash our own dishes with the threat of a fine from management - makes you wonder if anything is clean from the people before you and it just doesn't feel very welcoming.

Yes, it was cheap, no, definitely will NOT stay again.

Room Tip: Just make sure you know what you are getting before you pay, your better off booking both bedrooms i...

As I was travelling the GOR I wanted a cheap overnight stop at apollo bay. This place was centrally located, cheap and rooms and accommodation were good. It was very quite so 3 of us had the run of a big unit which was great. Would certainly stay again.

We booked a double room here which looked exactly like the second photo in the gallery. We were happy with the room but found it a bit odd that this is actually a room within a two bedroom apartment. I've had plenty of experiences sharing lounge space and kitchen areas at other backpackers but it was my first time sharing with just one other couple. Also, I think the signage throughout the hostel can be improved. Maybe they've had bad experiences with guests leaving things unclean but some of them do not come across as very welcoming! The staff themselves were friendly though.

First I would like to stay if sharing a bathroom and communal area is not for you then look elsewhere. Wevstayed over the cup weekend in Nov and the setup gies like this. Two separate queen rooms each with separate key BUT you share the bathroom, kitchen area and lounge area. We were very fortunate in that the other couple got up late and we are early risers so the issue of the bathroom being occupied did not arise however if this is a problem for you then this isn't the place to stay. Being cup weekend there was another couple in the unit however if you visited in off peak. (not summer or school Hols) then you just may get the unit all to yourself.
We paid $85 per night for our double room (stayed 3 nights) we thought this v reasonable till we checked with the other couple and found they only paid $70 per night for their 3 night stay. not happy so whatever you do negotiate!! We had unit 2 on the ground floor.
Yes it's in need of a makeover and we had trouble closing the shower door but considering what you are paying you cannot expect the Taj Mahal!!
there is a full stove, microwave and full size fridge so you can certainly cook up your own meals if desired.
They did kindly let us put our motorbikes undercover in the carport thanks mate! :))
value of this ACCOMM in apollo bay 9/10
Quality of furnishings. 6-6.5/10

For Apollo bay it is even cheaper than the double room at the YHA!!
It is nice and close to the main street one road back so you can leave car and walk everywhere.
the Thai restaurant is nice and the pick of the pubs is definitely the Great ocean hotel, which is the top pub near the golf course.
Do not be confused we stayed at the BACKPACKERS lodge in PASCOE st behind the Foodworks supermarket, DO NOT. Stay at the AB backpackers which is another place altogether and an absolute hovel.!!

Room Tip: Room 2 downstairs is ok and not right next to the street. All double rooms have a shared bathroom bu...

We booked the apartment for 7ppl. Upon arriving guy was on the phone, for a good 8 mins before he even acknowledged us. Once i paid he still seemed very angry and showed us to our apartment. Had 2 bedrooms. one with double bed the other room with 4 bunk beds. The Linen was very dirty Mine had stains on it, while my mates one had dried blood on it.
Living room was decent size and good for a group to chill out. Lights were in weird positions so wasnt all that great when turned on near the tv area. other then that everything seemed to be ok.
We made our own breakfast in our kitchen.

Close to shops and resturants. but then again its a small town.

Wont stay here again. but yeh its cheap.....

i booked a double room in a 2-bedroom property. what attracted me to this place initially, was the 'Wifi available' in all rooms. I was led to think that wifi was provided free in the room, because it was put in one sentence together with 'TV & DVD and wifi are available in all rooms. however I was wrong. it comes with a price. then, comes the 'continental breakfast included', I wonder which part of it was continental when I only found coffee powder and tea bags in the kitchen area. last but not least, the unfriendly service from the staff. haiz, I was glad to be out of the place.
on a good note, if you are looking for spacious, ideally located lodging, this is quite good as the supermarket as just across the road and is also within walking distances to other shops and eating outlets.

If you write reviews they should have wrong or misleading information. 1st nowhere do we advertise free wifi . 2nd The photo & information regerding breakfast is incorrect. The photo is free tea & coffee supplied to apartments not breakfast. If you took the time to listen on checkin the breakfast is served in Hostel dining area

This Lodge is an old 70s motel which has been converted into a cheap lodge. It isn't really a backpackers as such. There are a variety of self contained apartments, providing one or two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and small living room with TV. They are not glamorous, they are in fact quite ugly, but are warm, spacious and functional. Great for a family of four adults sharing, which brings the cost down. Useful for a base to explore the area and, having a kitchen, keeping the catering cost down too.
