Decided to stay here instead of Launceston because of a great winter deal. Peppers York Cove previously housed the terminal building for the now defunct Port Welshpool to George Town ferry service.
We stayed in a one bedroom apartment but in reality it is a three bedroom apartment with rooms not used locked up. The apartment has air conditioning and faces York Cove. The property is adjacent to the Tamar River. There is a balcony with an outdoor table setting. The living area is massive as is the kitchen. Fittings are all top quality with a Smeg oven, five stove top gas burners, a Smeg dishwasher and an Omega two door fridge/freezer with an ice dispenser (choice of crushed or cubed ice no less!). I was in kitchen heaven. One criticism is that the place lacks cutlery. There wasn't even a basic vegetable peeler. There was a tiny frying pan - which is fine for two people, but assuming that all three bedrooms were occupied, and if this kitchen is supposed to cater for 6 people, then more utensils and equipment needs to be added. A lot of the cupboards were bare.
The bedroom we had had a huge king sized bed with a soft woollen underlay - nice and comfy and it's own wall mounted TV and air conditioning. The view wasn't that great - just the brick wall to the next apartment block. The shower unit in the bathroom had a huge showerhead - very soothing. There is also a huge utilities room with a washing machine and dryer and massive cupboard space.
The apartment has Luxaflex blinds in the living areas but these need to be handled very gently as they are prone to jamming.
Internet is very reasonably priced (e.g.$8.95 for 24 hour period with a cap of 700mb). Not sure if if this was because this part of Tasmania was one of the first to be trialled for NBN.
The property has a heated swimming pool (didn't use it as it was too cold) and an onsite restaurant. It is open for breakfast and dinner (not sure about lunch), except on Sunday nights. Unfortunately I'm not able to comment on food as I didn't eat there. However, for those who like to self cater, there are at least two supermarkets in George Town - Woollies and IGA. There is also a BWS on the main street of George Town. The Town Centre is within walking distance of Peppers (about 15-20 minutes) - there is a path that heads around York Cove (goes all the way to Low Head light house).
There was a fairly decent games room - pool table, air hockey, a table tennis table, a few computer games, a jukebox, big blackboard but no chalk. There was a gym as well, but I didn't get a chance to check that out.
The apartment is very secure and there is a secure underground carpark which has free parking.
All in all, I'd stay here again. This would be a great place to stay for a longer holiday. Northern Tassie has many great beaches. One of the best properties in Tassie, particularly if you prefer contemporary lodgings.
