The Yarns Artwork in Silk together with the Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum make one of the most unexpected and delightful museum attractions in Tasmania. It is not large but it is curated and presented immaculately.

The beautiful 4 piece tapestry representing the district is sublime in its size and detail. The creativity, colour and execution is matchless. It is presented and explained in an attractive purpose built auditorium. In case the men find this too effeminate there is a range of old farm machinery and representations of farm life of yesteryear.

The old shop and home, beautifully appointed with appropriate artifacts, together with the outside property is used to reflect on the district's past. I encourage people to visit this gem.

I read about this quilted artwork in my Lonely Planet guidebook, and marked it down as one of the things I wanted to see. It was a labour of love by 300 creative local men and women, and we arrived just in time to see the presentation in the purpose-built auditorium. It is a stunning beautiful artwork, designed to be seen at a slight distance, but wonderful to see close-up to appreciate the texture and workmanship. I bought the DVD to learn more about its genesis. After seeing this beauty we were encouraged to leave the main road and travel on to the mural town of Sheffield, and what a great decision that was.

We're so glad we didn't miss this little gem - yet, to be honest, we weren't particularly excited before we went in.

You sit in a comfortable new auditorium as a spotlight and commentary pick out various features of the impressive 3-dimensional tapestries depicting the local area over 4 seasons.

At the end, you can go up close and really admire this magnificent community art project.

To our further surprise, the 'folk museum' (included in the entry price) is so much more - it's really a collection of heritage cottage building and gardens filled with interesting objects, and with panoramic views of the Western Tiers.

And just when you thought you'd definitely had your money's worth, you turn a corner to find the most extraordinary object - an aquaphonium - i.e. a musical instrument powered by water.

Don't miss this beautifully illustrated history of Deloraine. It is not just for handicraft lovers. The museum and displays are well worth a look too. Allow an hour to see it all
