“Perfect, Isolated Beach Retreat”
Reviewed September 17, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Blue Seas beach house is the perfect place to stay if the only sounds you want to hear are the wind with waves gently breaking on the beach. Nestling in thick, native vegetation Blue Seas beach house peeks over the top of the bushes giving guests uninterrupted views of the sea. Sit on the deck and breathe in the sea air or stay warm inside with the wood fire and enjoy the views through the large windows.

My husband organised a surprise trip to Kangaroo Island for our wedding anniversary. We stayed four nights at Blue Seas. The weather was cold and wet (one day it struggled to get to 11 degrees), but as one of the other reviewers has remarked, anyone staying at Blue Seas should try to spend a whole day lazing around at the beach house.

The design of the house is striking with a wave-like roof and stone walls at either end. Inside guests walk on magnificent jarrah floor-boards. The colour is beautiful and as Ben pointed out, this native wood from south-west Australia is termite-proof.

The kitchen is large and well equipped. I was particularly impressed that it came stocked with herbs such as oregano, all-spice etc, though you do need to bring some cooking oil. With the barbecue on the back deck, Blue Seas is the ideal place to cook up meals using Kangaroo Island produce.

The wood fire warmed the house well. Ben (the owner) provided a good stock of wood. The house is self-sufficient, powered by solar panels and water provided from large tanks outside.

Ben provided us with hot water bottles but even though the night temperatures were cold, we were cosy under the blanket and doona provided. The only bathroom is attached to the main bedroom. When it is used during the night the light of the bathroom can wake a sleeping partner, but for the following nights we used the battery-operated tea candles provided - a safe light with a lovely ambience.

One of the lovely things about Kangaroo Island is how supportive businesses are of each other. Ben provided handwash produced by Emu Ridge - a Kangaroo Island producer of eucalyptus oil. The bathroom is well-tiled and I would imagine it would cope well with several guests washing off sand after a day at the beach. The soft stones inlaid in the floor under the shower felt nice underfoot. As this is an eco-friendly property that provides its own water, the water pressure in the shower is adequate, but not strong.

There is a short walk to the beach. This is my idea of an Australian beach - a huge stretch of sand with no-one around. We did not even see anyone else's footsteps when we walked along the sand.

Check with Ben, but I suspect Blue Seas beach house meets quite a few accessibility guidelines. There is a low-gradient ramp to the back door and the bathroom looks like it could fit a wheelchair. The lounge and kitchen are spacious so there is plenty of room for everyone. There are no rails around the verandah. While the drop is not too bad if you are expecting it, an unexpected fall could hurt. This is not a place for a drunken party and young children would need to be closely supervised.

The lounge comes equipped with a small but good range of books, magazines and games. There is also a small tv and a Blu-Ray player. It is also a great place to do a jigsaw puzzle.

We found the Optus phone signal was good at Blue Seas but there was little coverage further west on the island. Don't rely on GPS on Kangaroo Island - you need to use printed maps to navigate. Ben's instructions to the house were good. Guests have to travel several kilometres down dirt roads. Our Hyundai i30 coped with these roads. As always, drive to the conditions, so drive slowly. If you are hiring a car, make sure you are covered for travelling on dirt roads.

If you want to really experience the Australian environment, eco-friendly living and get away from it all, Blue Seas beach house is the perfect retreat for you.

“Sanctuary”
Reviewed August 21, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Blue Seas Beach House at D'Estrees Bay in winter is a lovely, secluded sanctuary for anyone who longs to immerse themselves in the peace and beauty of an Australian coastal wilderness.

My grown son and I spent a week there earlier this month, and although we explored the island a little, we were content to spend most of our time at D'Estrees Bay enjoying the beach walks and bird-life, and relaxing by the slow combustion fire reading and playing games - Ben and Ria went out of their way to bring us a brand new game of Monopoly!

We hope to return one day, and will probably choose winter again as we loved the cool, fresh days, brief showers and rainbows, overflowing lagoons and creeks, and the early wildflowers and orchids.

Kangaroo Island, and D'Estrees Bay in particular, is a place where one can escape, for a time, from all the irksome aspects of city life. I particularly found the break from traffic, crowds, and litter a relief.

“Blueseas Bliss...”
Reviewed August 14, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

What a magical place this is...complete peace and space within this rugged landscape.
From our initial contact with Ben it has been plain sailing and a pleasure to deal with him.
Ben attended to our every need, and it was reassuring to know he wasn't to far away should we need anything.
Blueseas is a beautiful home, completely off grid but with all the home comforts.
It is remote and to access this home is on unsealed roads, be prepared for a few bumps along the way.
The absolute peace and quiet is stunning, only the sound of the sea and the diverse range of birds. We could walk for hours and ever see a soul, agreat place if you need that detachment for our electronic busy world.
Thanks Ben for a memorable stay, we hope to return in the future.

“Clean, comfortable, simple and stylish allowing the stunning surrounds to star at all times.”
Reviewed February 28, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

In celebration of my partner's 50th birthday we stayed at Blue Seas for 8 nights, lots of information is provided to assist exploring the island The stunning surrounds often stopped us in our tracks with a superb wall of windows allowing us to witness an ever changing seascape. The beach house is a beauty, simple yet sophisticated and easy to live in and a minutes wander along the track to the beach. The kitchen was perfect to cook all the wonderful local produce procured during the day. Try to have one day without leaving the beach house to let the relaxation soak into your bones. D'estrees Bay is fantastic for for long walks on the beach, we walked for 4 hours and didn't see another soul. The remote position is such a positive, encouraging you to live a simple existence in line with beach house and surrounds. The only negative was we had to leave.

“Magic, secluded, realx by the beach”
Reviewed February 22, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We (3 people - mid-20s/ 30s) spent 2 nights at the BlueSeas beachhouse. The place has something magic, being almost hidden in the green, but close to the beach and with basically nobody else around! The house is very nice and clean. Everything is cared to the smallest detail. All this sun powered and using only rain water. The host, Ben, was very nice and friendly, and gave us some very good tips, including on how to best drive there through the unsealed road. The location is very nice, both because D'estrees bay is a nice place not many get to see in Kangaroo Island and because it's close to many other attractions of the island. Moreover, the house it's great for looking at the sun rise on the water. We really enjoyed our time there and we hoped we could have stayed longer.

“Excellent stay”
Reviewed January 18, 2016 for a stay in January 2016

I stayed here as part of a surprise trip from my partner (which the surprise got busted about a month before the trip). I'd never been to Kangaroo Island before and was very excited to get around and this house was the perfect introduction to what KI is all about. The directions were very well written to get to the house and finding it wasn't an issue. The location may seem far away from everything, but the nature of the road layout makes the house a quick drive to all parts of the island, but it is still remote enough to feel as if there is no one else in existence which is perfect.
On arrival we were greeted by both the owner Ben, and a beautiful cool sea breeze. The house was very clean and well equipped in the kitchen, the bed was comfy and the bathroom very clean. Each day we explored the island but I always looked forward to returning to the house and relaxing on the deck with the views. At night time is was slightly warm weather but the breeze coming through the windows and doors was welcomed and sleeping with the sound of the ocean nearby was very relaxing. It was also interesting learning about the area around the house with its brief whaling history.
The eco nature of the house very interesting. It seems as if it was built from the ground up as an eco friendly house which worked very well. To be honest I was a little sceptical about the eco nature but I soon realised that it is a great way to live (imagine living electricity bill free!).
As has been written about the road in is fine for sedans and is easily driven with care. If you follow the road past the house it takes you to shag rock. Would have been a great walk but I decided to tackle it in my car which was great fun! As written in the welcome book Telstra works well, but the 3g internet connection can be patchy. That being said this place is best enjoyed by immersing yourself in the environment and turning off all technology.
I would highly recommend this house to anyone travelling to KI.

“Pristine isolation and beauty!”
Reviewed December 7, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

We stayed at Blue Seas for two nights and found it to be a fantastic retreat. The house is simple but wonderfully equipped with a wall of windows and deck facing the sea. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was a treat. Ben the owner was very welcoming and accommodating. Very peaceful, very quiet, just a minute walk over the dunes to the beach, which appeared to be empty the entire time we were there (we did see another set of footprints, but no people!).

A few things to note: The house is reached via unsealed roads which are basically fine- a regular car will be fine with just a bit of care. The house is located in a fairly remote area- at least 35 minutes back to Kingscote for groceries and gas. For us this was a big positive- we love being in a more remote area. While our Google Maps navigation correctly located the house, it seriously over-estimated the time required to arrive there- estimating the trip at more than twice as long as it actually was from Kingscote. Finally, the house is two bedrooms with one bathroom, and the bathroom is attached to one of the bedrooms, so the 2nd bedroom accesses the bathroom either through the first or via an outside door on the back deck. None of this detracts from how nice the house is- just good to know!
