The KI Penguin Center provides tours of the Kingscote Penguin Sanctuary. The birds are only onshore at night and acess to the sanctuary is restricted to tours lead by the Center. This is one of the few locations in Australia the Fairy Penguins are found. On the night we went, we saw 6 baby penguins, two being fed by one of their parents. Tours start at 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. If you have kids, do the early tour, by the time we had a group orientation and walked to the beach and back, it was close to 9:30 when we were done. Be sure to wear good walking shoes because although part of the walk is on a disabled accessible walkway, the tour does go down to the beach. It can be cool and windy on the beach at night, so a windbreaker is a good idea. Flash photography is not allowed- it startles the penguins, but the tour guides spotlight the birds with red lights. I was able to get some reasonable photos with a small digital camera by this light. Funds from the tour help support the work of the center in helping to protect the Fairy Penguin.

Having seen fairy penguins before i loved the fact the tour was just small groups seeing these fantastic little creatures. We had a totally entertaining guide and although we only saw half a dozen penguins i think it was well worth the money (as the penguin numbers on Kangaroo Island (KI)are being decimated by the NZ fur seals). The only tip igf going in the summer (daylight savings) is to take the 9:30 tour as you may spot more penguins as it is darker by then. I would definitely recommend this tour and would do it again myself going back to KI.

This was so worth it! Watch these beautiful animals as the go about their nocturnal lives.

All respectfully done with everyone getting a chance to see these cuties.

We saw adults and youngsters walking swimming and socialising so delicate and precious.

Worth going to support these creatures whose numbers are sadly dwindling due to seals and sea litter.

Enjoy an amazing night :)

I guess this depends on the luck of the evening you go. We only saw a few penguins, and of course it is dark and you must rely on your guide to use his/her flashlight to highlight one. They cannot leave the light on very long either. Have been to Antarctica and nothing can compare to that. They are cute if you see one, but we obviously didn't have the best night.
