We flew into Adelaide and took the Rex airline 20 min flight to Kingscote airport which is the size of a shoe box so don't fret about looking for the staff from the lodge. The staff approached us immediately, identified our luggage and we reached the lodge within one hour. Jessica our guide was very friendly and called us y our first names. This is one thing I noticed that the staff has a great ability to put you at ease and talk to you and treat you like a friend visiting their house.
NOTHING prepares you to walk through the double doors of The Southern Ocean Lodge! The view just takes your breath away as soon as you step in! After your initial shock you are allowed to enjoy the view while they take your details. Then comes the suites! Again, amazing! Rooms are with heated floors, comfortable beds and linen, very clean, all mod cons. The toiletries are especially a treat! The tours were amazing. All tailor made. We pretty much took the trios recommended (most are included in the package) ie: seal bay, kangaroos and canapes, cliff top hike, KI wonders. They were all incredible! The guides were knowledgeable. Take time to walk down the beach. The next thing I have to tell you is the FOOD! All the local produce is superb! The menu changes everyday. There is not a single thing to complain about. Usually I am very fussy but this place met and exceeded my every expectation. A real treasure!

Room Tip: The rooms further away from the reception area has more privacy. Stay at least 3 nights.

Seeing all the latest wonderful reviews has inspired me to write my own overdue one. We stayed in the winter as a family of 4 (2 kids aged 11 & 7) in July 2010 in the middle of a 6 week Pacific trip, and it was one of the favourite places for all of us. The lodge is breathtaking, and we had a lovely 2 BR suite (room 19 I think) fortunately at the end of the hall near the great room. That way our kids were comfortable going back & forth to the room themselves, and even staying there alone while we finished dinner. Staff was wonderful to us, even leaving bath toys for the kids. We did every tour available (sea lions & lighthouse, fur seals, Remarkable Rocks, caves, cliff walk, kangaroos & canapes) & we all enjoyed each of them: just the right level of information & activity for both adults & kids alike. The small tour bus was comfy, offered great views from the huge windows, & the stops for coffee, tea & treats were a nice touch too. Food & wine was fantastic, and the kitchen was very accomodating in making packaged Kraft Dinner for our choosy son each night too. Hot tub was enjoyed by all, and spa on the cliff top was beautiful. They even offered to watch our kids in the great room if we wanted to have spa treatments at the same time. The sunrises were glorious, as was the double rainbow! Just wish it wasn't so far from home.

Room Tip: The lodge is laid out as one long hallway, stretched along the cliff, so that all rooms have views. Room 1 is at the very end, 21 is closest to the great room & dining room, so decide how far you want to walk.

The place is awesome. I have not experienced a better staff, anywhere. The food is simple and elegant at the same time. The wine list outstanding. Totally enjoyed the excursion to the lighthouse. Even saw hundreds of kangaroos and a koala bear on the road (live!!!) to Kingscote airport on departure. Room 6 Loch Sloy.

Where do you begin? The experience-extraordinary. The hotel-magnificent. The service-faultless. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Not to mention Kangaroo Island, which is a natural wonder of the world. A great credit to those who created it and those who manage it.

Room Tip: all rooms are beautiful
