“A great place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2009

My husband and I, along with our two best friends, had the pleasure of staying at On the Beach Holiday Apartments this August, 2009. The four of us have always stayed in hotel rooms before, but decided to try an apartment for our trip to an Australian beach area. We did our research (part of it through Trip Advisor) and thought this was a good fit for us. We were so right. The two bedroom apartment was on the beach, close to several restaurants, within walking distance to a grocery store, a bakery, and a chemist (pharmacy). The apartment gave us a feel that we were coming home compared to a hotel room. We ate out several times, but as a cost savings, we also cooked in the apartment. We were able to watch the sun rise each morning while sitting on our balcony and enjoying coffee we made. We were completely satisfied with the experience and Melissa, the manager, and her daughter Jennifer, were wonderful! Melissa responded to a slight problem with the apartment (the dryer door needed repair) with immediate action. Melissa also helped us with our tour selections and gave us the time we needed to make our choices. I would recommend On the Beach to anyone looking for a relaxing stay close to the beach and would like to have a staff that will assist you in your tour planning. One exceptional tour I must mention is the Seastar which is a tour to the Great Barrier Reef, both the inner reef at Michaelmas Cay and outer Hastings Reef. The Seastar offers snorkeling, diving, an introductory dive for those who would like to try it, as well as a glass bottom boat ride. This is a great value for your money and it is an excellent experience. Two of us went diving, one tried the intro dive, and one snorkeled and all of us were thrilled with the experience.

My Wife and I spent 5 relaxing days at Trinity Beach, which is a quiet suburb 15km north of Cairns. The locale is quite small and has limited restaurent and shopping facilities. This is definitely a place for old farts (cheap ones like me) or families with young kids who just want to play in the sand. Thre is no real nightlife for the swinging set. It isn't the best beach in the area, certainly Four Mile at Port Douglas has much nicer sand and swimming, but it quite pretty with plenty of palm trees and framed by hills. The stores are about a 15 minute walk, and you should be capable of this if you stay here. Bus service does run by the shops, but it is every 1/2 hour. This is not a place for those with mobility problems.

On the Beachfront was a nice facility. We had a lovely third floor balcony apartment overlooking the ocean and watched the lovely sunrise each morning before plunging into the ocean for a swm. The room was well laid out and a perfect size for two. the kitchen had a microwave and hot plate. We cooked dinner each night on the bbq downstairs by the pool. Overall, I would rate the place as good value. The staff ere pleasant and the two resident cats who patrol the grounds were most friendly.

However, a big disappointment was the stinginess in regards to supplies. My wife and I have stayed in a number of self-catering units in Cairns and around Australia and never before have we been told by the management that we must purchase our own hand soap, toilet paper, trash bags, and other basic complimentary items at the local supermarket. We found this quite astonishing given that a small cake of soap costs the owners a few cents. This attitude completely baffled me and put the damper on an otherwiwse pleasant experience as I had to hike up to the local supermarket to by a roll of toilet paper. this is the reason I makerd them down from 4 stars to 3 on value and from 3 stars to 2 on service.

We had never been to Australia, and decided on a beach location in the northeast since we were traveling during the continent's winter months. We found On the Beach via Expedia and it appealed to us due to its proximity to the beach and value. The staff, Melissa and Joanie, were EXCEPTIONAL, and did everything to ensure our stay was comfortable. Melissa was kind enough to lend us her beach chair, since we did not have lounge chairs for the beach. Trinity Beach is so beautiful, and all amenities were within walking distance of the apartment. The local restaurants were all very good and the views from our apartment were magnificent. The staff arranged tours for us to the local attractions (Skyrail to the Daintree Rain Forest and the Seastar Cruise tour for snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef), which made these expeditions seamless. Our only problem was we didn't stay long enough! The trip from Texas is pretty grueling, so we would advise anyone traveling from the US to stay at least two weeks to avoid the severe case of jet lag we experienced from an eight day stay. This was a great trip for us, and we would certainly recommend the On the Beach Apartments for anyone looking for a place near the beach to stay. Thanks!! This was our first experience of Australia and the apartments were home to us for the first week of our 3 week vacation. We stayed in a 2 bedroomed sea view apartment. It was well equipped and provided the perfect mix of high quality space with a homely feel. The advice we received about places to visit and service providers was excellent and met the needs of parents and 8 year old child. The pool space was very clean and well maintained and the gardens well looked after. The location directly opposite the stinger net made it a great beachside location too. We look forward to our return visit.

We stayed at On the Beach, we arrived after hours but our key was in a safe and was easy to find, the location was perfect and walked along the beach every evening. The view from our balcony was beautiful. The room was a good size for 2, the air con in the room wasn't as cool as in the lounge but was ok. Although there was an extra fan. We stayed for 5 nights therefore clean towels half way through would have been good, however couldn't fault anything else. The staff were friendly and lovely and couldn't be more helpful. We missed our trip to the reef but melissa was on hand to get us on another trip that day and get us there on time. Brilliant service.

It is great to see that the efforts we have placed into our property over recent months is working. We have reviewed all service standards with the team, upgraded several apartments, initiated an ongoing maintenance plan and look forward to making a warm welcome to all future guests so that all comments can be as favorable as this one. My husband and I stayed here for 23 nights last November/December. We had booked a package including flights and transfers with a UK company and it was actually our second visit to the same location and apartments, the only difference being a different airline and stopover on the way home.
We decided to pay for an upgrade to one of the excellent 'Seashells' apartments which have 2 bedrooms and are very spacious ,with large balconies, after seeing what we had been allocated. The i bedroom apartments are perfectly adequate but much smaller and after staying in the Blue Marlin 2-bedroomed apartments last time (a free upgrade!) I suppose we had been spoilt. Seashells apartments also have a lift to all floors from either the entrance hall or the under-building garage. There's a pool and jacuzzi to each apartment building with plenty of loungers, chairs etc. and also a gas barbecue to each.
With palm trees, well-tended gardens (Des, the gardener, works really hard to keep everywhere looking immaculate) and the beach right opposite it 's a very nice place to stay.
We were able to book any trips (the Reef, fishing and the Daintree) from the tour desk in Reception and there is a car hire kiosk in Trinity Beach Road which we have used both times. Although the trips are good value we liked having a car to get to other places - Port Douglas is a must for great food (On the Inlet, Court House Hotel etc.) but T. B. has its own gem too, in the form of Trinity Pizza. It's not just pizza as they offer some wonderful seafood dishes. One of the owners does the cooking and it's really good!!
There are also 2 good newish restaurants just a bit further up from the care hire place.
Last time we visited, we ate several times at the place opposite L'Unoco's, it offered good breakfasts and very reasonable evening meals. However, after one meal there this time, we passed on it as they have new owners and they are definitely nowhere as good as the previous people. Much dearere, off-hand attitude and the food was pretty indifferent! Although this was the only place we experienced it.
The bus service into Cairns is reliable and reasonably priced and the buses are very clean. Cairns itself is very nice and there is a good 1/2 day orientation tour with a very knowledgeable driver/guide to show you places that you would probably otherwise miss, with a cream tea thrown in too!!
I really enjoy tropical Far North Queensland

We stayed at these apartments for nearly two weeks. The managers and the facilities were excellent. The location is great, next to the beach, not far from cafes and restaurants and easy access to tourist destinations. Highly recommended
