We have a great interest in Victorian prisons, transportation etc so it was good to come across this Gaol on our trip up the East coast of Australia. It is one that was not on our list, probably because it covered a more later time frame than most, but still very interesting to find out about the reasons, mostly abortive, that made the authorities build it there. The local wild life was an added bonus, even if the nesting birds objected quite strongly to our presense! I do have to say that some tourists are guilty of completely ignoring warning signs and suffered the consequence of being attacked! We did a self tour although there were guided tours available. Go up the watchtower for some great 360 degree views.
