The Blenheim Randwick
Ranked #9 of 11 Randwick B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 22, 2010

I chose this hotel because it is close to UNSW and it is relatively new. The location was excellent as it is poised between the University and Coogee - both within an easy walk. One reviewer mentioned that the rooms are very small - this is true - but they are functional. However, my biggest disappointment was the cleanliness. The patio table was very dirty, cigarette butts on the patio floor, ledge above the bed was covered with at least 2 weeks of dust; dirty finger prints on the bathroom door. Someone did come in and remove the cigarette butts from the patio but then left the door unlocked so that my room was open during the day when I was away.
My room overlooked the communal area in back and the table was littered with cigarette butts as were the gardens. This was a gathering place and at night, was quite noisy. My room was on the quiet side of the building and I found that by closing windows and turning on the air conditioning that I could get quite a good night's sleep as noise was masked.
The other disappointment was regarding small things - only 4 hangers and when I requested more, was told this was the standard and there were no more available. No hand towels or face cloths. Check-out is at 10 and check-in at my next hotel was at 2pm. The office closes at noon-4pm so there was no place to store luggage, which proved an inconvenience. I am not sure how this works for people checking in to the Blenheim as their check-in is also at 2pm. In my case, my flight arrived early and they were able to accommodate me with an early check-in. The reception staff were friendly and after several complaints did reduce the cost of my stay a small amount.
I found Sydney very expensive (as compared to Canada) and this hotel, expensive for what I got. However, the location is excellent if you are visiting UNSW. With a little bit of effort in the area of cleanliness, this hotel would better live up to its advertising.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments and feedback. As a new hotel it's really important for us to keep improving ourselves, and this is only possible when we get to hear what guests think about the property.

I'm glad you enjoyed the locality of the hotel, and the rooms themselves. I am sincerely apologetic about the cleanliness issues with some areas of your room. These incidents are unacceptable and the information has been passed on to the manager of the property to further review what went wrong and how these things can be corrected for future guests.

I have also passed on your comments about the customer service when you requested additional coat hangers for your room. You certainly should have been able to hang up the clothes you brought with you for your trip, this must have been frustrating and for this I apologise.

Because the Blenheim Randwick is a smaller 17 room building, the reception has two opening periods a day for check-ins and check-outs. If people ever are arriving outside of these hours alternative arrangements are always made so that they are able to check-in when they arrive at the hotel. There is also always a duty manager on duty, who is only a phone call away at all hours.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Room allocated was great inside but did'nt like location as Balcony was not private. Luckily the front desk was able to move us to a better location. Rooms are on the small side but more than adequate and well designed for maximum natural light, with all necessary amenities. Parking on site was'nt available, but we managed to find parking fairly near by.
Would stay again. Price was reasonable for this type of accommodation.

The Blenheim is a welcome edition to the hotel scene in the Randwick district. Well located, clean, friendly, good service.

The only drawback is that their reception closes at 8pm. To their credit they did call me and leave detailed instructions for check-n if I was arriving after 8pm.

The Blenheim has extremely narrow rooms, and small toilets (no bath), that requires some crafty manouvreing even for someone of my size (just 5 feet tall). There is an external lift servicing the floors, although this is slow and hard to get going, so I recommend climbing the stairs if the luggage is not too hefty. Some of the rooms require the luggage to be lugged up an additional 4-5 steps despite the lift.

The balcony is a nice touch, but despite my non-smoking room, I shared my balcony with a smoker from next door. This made it near impossible to leave the balcony door/windows open as the smoke will filter into the room. Plus you can clearly hear your neighbour from inside the room when they talk on the balcony.

The wall air conditioning unit is a little tricky to navigate, and the placement of the fridge beneath the wardrobe on one side of the room, while the tea/kettle facilities are on the other side of the room, adds to the inconvenience.

There was much confusion as to the billing, despite having emailed the hotel prior to check-in to alter reservations. This may be because there's a different person manning the reception each time we stepped by.

Parking is at a premium - $10 a day, and only 4 spots are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The Blenheim is extremely convenient for those that need to be within walking distance of the upper campus of UNSW, Sydney Children's Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, Royal Women's Hospital and the Randwick Racecourse. Just nearby is a Coles that opens till late most nights, and Belmore Road which is full of shops and other amenities.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for your feedback. Reviews help us to improve our service and continually improve the customer experience at The Blenheim Randwick.

I'm sorry to hear you thought the room was smaller than you might have expected. The Blenheim is the newest accommodation facility in the Randwick/Coogee area and has some of the largest rooms in the area for that price level. We do have King Rooms as well as the standard Queen Rooms which offer extra space and a larger bed, I apologise if none of these weren't available at the time of your booking.

Thank you for letting us know about the elevator as well, this problem has since been rectified and elevator is now working properly. Being such a new building, which only opened in January this year, I'm sure you could understand there were a few minor teething problems with things like the newly installed elevator. After being in operation for some months now everything seems to be working well.

I'm sorry to hear you had a less than enjoyable experience on check-out with regards to your account settlement. Sometimes if a reservation is altered it is important for us to double check the account, only to ensure that you, the customer, are not overcharged for any nights you did not stay. I apologise if this took longer than expected to reconcile while you were departing the hotel.

We are always happy to hear that guests enjoyed how close The Blenheim is to important spots in Randwick like the UNSW campus and the hospital complex which consists of the Sydney Children's Hospital, the Prince of Wales Hospital and Royal Hospital for Women. We are glad to hear you found the location convenient and that it suited your needs.

Thank you again for your review.

This is a couple of small modern apartment buildings, arranged as self-contained accommodation units. The king-size room we had was a tight squeeze, with a tiny toilet and shower room off to one side. One of the blocks faces onto a quiet street, the other onto a busy road. Insulation is non-existent, so it is worth choosing a room in the quieter block, but even so the blinds don’t shut out much light, and none of the sound. Cleanliness could be better. The main benefit is the location, close to a couple of major hospitals and the University of New South Wales. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within a short stroll, including two adequate Japanese restaurants, at least four Thai restaurants and a range of others. One pleasure is the café High, about 80 metres from the Blenheim, serving decent food and excellent coffee.

Thank you for your valued feedback. We always like to hear feedback so we can continually improve the guest experience at The Blenheim.

We are sorry you had a negative experience at the hotel, especially with the noise from the street. You are quite right, we do have a set of quieter rooms than those at the front of the building, I apologise if these were booked out when you stayed at The Blenheim, we would have been more than happy to place you in these rooms if noise is an issue for you.

We take hygiene and cleanliness very seriously at The Blenheim, and I am sorry to hear the room was not up to your standards. We will be investigating how things could have gone unseen by the housekeeping staff on your stay date, and will of course endeavor to correct any problems in that area.

The Blenheim is in a great spot in Randwick, and we are happy you enjoyed the convenience of being close to the University/Hospital complex, as well as the many great places to eat nearby.

Thank you again for your comments. We hope you will stay with us again in the near future.

Newly opened (Jan 2010) lodging. At the time of the review, the lodging didn't have a proper website as such but an email contact on its one web page. Booked through wotif as the rates were good with free wifi.

Although the address says 26 Blenheim St, the main entrance is along High Street, just opposite the children's hospital.

Room is clean although a bit on the small side by Aussie standards. Nice, modern decor. They have mainly queen & king rooms. Some king beds unzip to become twin beds. Every room has a balcony. Shower cubicle & no long bath. In room coffee & tea making facilities, kettle & mini fridge. Dishwashing liquid & tea towel to wash up. iPod dock - wish it were an iPhone/iTouch dock!!

Full cooking facilities in downstairs kitchen with stove, oven, microwave oven, toaster, pots/pans & utensils. Cutlery & crockery. You can eat in an outdoor open space behind the kitchen or bring up to your room balcony where there's a table & 2 chairs.

Hospital complex is just right across the road & UNSW within short walking distance. Lots of shops, restaurants & cafes in the vicinity. #400 bus to airport (domestic & international) as well as to Bondi Junction (shopping mall) just outside. Other buses to city, etc abt 5 mins walk to main road. Keycard access after 8pm when they close the main gate & back gate. Area is very safe as it's in a residential area.

Traffic quietens down in the night, especially when the buses stop operating. Ask for a room facing Blenheim St if you are sensitive to noise.

Hi there. Thank you for your kind comments about The Blenheim.

We are happy to hear you thought the rates reasonable for The Blenheim. We pride ourselves on providing great value rooms, unparalleled in quality in the Randwick area.

It is great to hear you enjoyed all of the room features, however I'm sorry if you had problems using our iPod dock. The iPhone is compatible with the dock, it may have been a bit tricky to dock it.

One of the best attributes of The Blenheim is its location. It makes us happy to hear you enjoyed how close the hotel is to many things in Randwick, including UNSW and the Prince of Wales Hospital.

We apologise if you had a problem with the noise. As you could imagine, there is little we can do when the traffic gets busy outside. If our quieter rooms were unavailable for whatever reason, I'm sorry we were not able to place you in a suitable room.

Thank you again for your valued feedback.
