“I've stayed in better backpackers”
Reviewed January 4, 2009

I would not recommend this lodge to anyone. It was dirty. eg bathroom had mould on ceiling and grouting, walls dirty. The rooms are not serviced regularly. Towels come on a first come first served bases left on a table. Airconditioning unit rattled so I could not sleep with it on. When I asked about it I was told to turn it up to 24C still rattled but they were not helpful said there was nothing wrong with it. Rooms really small can hardly walk around the bed. Also charged straight away so no chance of trying to find somewhere else unless you want to pay double. Also found fire precautions dubious, no evecuation plan in room. no fire escape and I dont think the smoke alarm was working.

Thank you for providing your feedback.

I apologize for the cleanliness issues with the room, these claims were investigated and the appropriate actions have been taken to correct the problems. The towels are provided by reception at any time you need extras, the towels in the hallway on the towel stand are for your comfort so that you don't have to walk to reception if you would like a spare. We are always happy to hand out extra towels, sheets or toiletry products to make your stay more comfortable, just ask at reception of give us a call from your room.

The air-conditioning units, when installed, were faulty and we apologize for this inconvenience. The units have since been replaced by the manufacturer and are functioning correctly.

Our payment policy of payment on arrival is not to lock you into your spend in anyway, we do this instead of holding money on your credit card, which most larger hotels do without advising you. We feel it is more beneficial for our guests to have settled their account on arrival and have no further issues with credit cards or outstanding payments. Most of our guests enjoy this freedom, I am sorry you did not find the benefits substantial.

The claims about the fire safety of the building are incorrect and very misleading. All Australian commercial buildings are inspected regularly by the local fire department and Perouse Lodge is awarded its certificate of safety each time without fail. All fire alarms are functional and we take evacuation procedures very seriously, which is why information is posted throughout the building.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

I recently stayed at Perouse Lodge and found their website rather misleading.

They fail to tell you that in order to have your room serviced it's an extra $25. They also failed to tell me this when I checked in.

The double rooms barely had enough room for you to move around the bed so in order for someone to get pass, one of you had to climb onto the bed. We were not the only individuals staying there with this complaint.

Also they did not inform us that payment was required at the beginning of our stay. Instead they debited a credit card without authorisation (and might I add the wrong card) in the midst of our stay till it maxed out. Needless to say when we went to pay for lunch that day and our card declined, we were less than impressed. When we confronted the receptionist about this issue we were met with an abrassive individual who said it was her right to charge the card, that she did not need to inform us of this transaction and that this was common practice in many hotels as she had worked in many 5 star hotels before and this was their practice (she did not mention whether she worked as a cleaner but I could tell by her customer service why she no longer worked in one). She also had limited knowledge on how to fix this problem as if she merely voided the transaction the money would go back onto the card within 24hrs instead she refunded the amount which took 7 days in order to process.

I'm also concerned with the lack of information on fire safety. No evacuation procedure was to be founhd anywhere. Also the fire alarms on fault setting thus they would not be set of in the case of a fire rendering them useless.

The information folder in the room had out of date prices for the cafe below which were misleading and gave no number for the hotel in order for relatives to contact us if need be.

To be frank I have stayed in better backpackers then here. I would not recommend staying here to anyone. Not value for money.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our lodge.

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. We take customer satisfaction very seriously and are always unhappy to hear the rare occasions when a guest felt they did not receive a high standard product or service.

As a budget property, Perouse Lodge keeps costs down so that the best value prices can be passed on to the customers. In line with this mission, we only service the rooms if you would like to incur the cost of $25. Many of our guests enjoy this freedom and find that they may only need their room serviced once or twice in a long stay, therefore lowering the price of the accommodation for them. I am sorry that this was not explained to you and that you felt this did not suit your needs.

When you provide your credit card details to a hotel at the time of booking, these details are for the hotel to secure the booking for you. In the event that no payment was made at check-in, the hotel has full authorization to charge the accommodation. This is especially important when guests start to fly under the radar once checking-in. Our reservation software detects situations where guests might not have enough money to pay for the room, and the relevant actions are taken to ensure we receive payment. Dealing with guests who may or may not be financially strapped when staying at a hotel is something all hotels around the world deal with and why actions are taken by all hotels to secure payment. We are sorry that you did not enjoy such actions being taken.

The fire safety comments are untrue and misleading. Every month Perouse Lodge is inspected by the fire department and awarded a certificate of safety which is always on display in reception. You would have seen this sign on check-in. We are sorry you felt that the NSW fire department standards are not as high as yours. If possible, could you please contact the hotel and advise us on any upgrades you would like to see to the rooms in terms of fire safety. There is already an evacuation route diagram on the back of every room as well as fire detectors. We would appreciate you taking the time to do this as we take the safety of our guests very seriously.

If ever your friends or relatives need to contact you in a hotel, I would recommend giving them the hotel phone number, the same as the number you use to book a room. This way, reception can always transfer the call to your room. Many of our guests enjoy this feature we have at our lodge, I am sorry you did not find this service satisfactory.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.
