Description: Set in the historic Savoy picture theatre building, AVALON Restaurant and Cocktail Bar at Katoomba combines playful art-deco charm with hearty food, friendly service and spectacular Blue Mountains views. Located on main street Katoomba, enter the historic Savoy picture theatre foyer and make your way past the ticket booth and up the stairs. The restaurant inhabits the dress circle of the old theatre, and offers a decor of quirky retro finds and spectacular mountain views over Leura and the Jamison Valley. Meals are prepared in the old projection room, and cocktails and retro tunes are served in the former refreshment lounge, now a cosy bar complete with roaring fireplace. The art deco architecture is complemented by an eclectic collection of furnishings and artwork. The style of service is casual and friendly. Licensed and BYO wine.

“Wonderful restaurant”
Reviewed September 8, 2011

Avalon is a great experience, it has good food, good portions.
The staff are very friendly and it is in a lovely setting in an old theatre, so a bit quirky. The staff wear old fashioned outfits and all the crockery is odds, it really has a charming appeal. The food would be described as country cooking, very tasty.
I would recommend anyone to try the Avalon it is a great place.

“Great food and atmosphere”
Reviewed June 19, 2011

Been here twice and found the food great and the deserts are fantastic as well. The decor of the restaurant is unique with lots of antique and odd pieces in character with the old picture theatre.

Would definitely recommend this one. The staff is also very friendly as well.

“Food and service not worth the price”
Reviewed June 22, 2010

This restaurant used to be a great place to eat. The decor is lovely - situated in part of an old theatre. It seems as though the owners don't care anymore and this is reflected in the food and service. The food is quite expensive and presented poorly. It took an hour for drink orders to be taken when I went there recently, and a number of people who had a chicken dish said that it was very overcooked. Vegetarian options are limited and despite ringing weeks beforehand to let them know, a vegan friend of mine who was going there for a work dinner was served boiled vegetables and chips for the same price as everyone else's meal. Just lazy.

“A lovely meal in a lovely setting”
Reviewed March 19, 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed my evening meal at The Avalon. The misty evening cheated me of the renown views, but I loved the Art Deco decor and friendly atmosphere. It is a place that makes dining a memorable experience. I had one of the specials that night- grilled figs with creamy goat cheese and walnut crumbles, mixed green salad with crisped prosciutto. The figs were simply amazing. I followed up with an incredible black licorice cheesecake, served with fresh berries and ice cream. Now I'm desperately looking to replicate the cheesecake recipe! I wish I could have dined there again before I left the area.

“Quite nice view but disappointing meal”
Reviewed December 8, 2008

Interesting conversion of part of an old (decaying) theatre. It's a family-run concern and seems to be popular with local residents. Quirky decor with all kinds of antique / junk-shop artifacts everywhere. Large picture window with a view towards the Three Sisters.

Friendly service but the food was unexciting, poorly presentedand not good value for money. This restaurant was recommended in our travel guide but (aside from the view) we would have got a better meal in one of the many street-side bistro-type places.
