I stayed in the family room for a night with 2 other friends. The room was nice and comfortable, a bit on the basic side, but overall met expectations based on photos on website. The bathroom was ok, a little on the small side with very little basin & cabinet space, but most importantly was clean and hot water was plentiful.

The buffet hot breakfast was fantastic, lots of choice, eggs (omelette & fried), bacon, sausages, waffles, french toast etc.

Overall a nice stay, though a few minor things could be better, does the important things well.

After reading the reviews, I booked a family room for a night on Christmas Day.
The breakfast definitely lived up to expectations and everyone ended up eating far too much... the room was spacious and clean and with a bathroom spa, kitchen and TV was definitely great value!
Would love to visit again.

It immediately struck me that there was something of the ‘Bates Motel’ about this place. Maybe it had more to do with the rather odd people hanging around the over-hyped Katoomba during my visit but there was still something that made me feel uneasy about this place. I’ve stayed in loads of motels all over the world – some good / some bad. This place doesn’t fall in the bad category by any means but it’s also a long way from the good end of the scale. The rooms are tired and brown and 70s and gloomy. Or a least mine was far from ‘cosy’ as described by others…(I suspect the rooms vary in presentation and it seems that the larger family rooms are getting more favorable reviews than those used by us lone, or two person, travellers). The bathroom is pretty good though (nice tiled floors and shower) clearly benefiting from a makeover. The rest of the place needs it too: I don’t think that would impact on its ‘heritage’ status. The WiFi is crap (even if you can locate the signal)– don’t pay for it. The TV is very limited but to be honest this is not the sort of place you’ll want to particularly hang about in the evening because the lighting is fluorescent strip all over so ‘chilling out’ before bed time is a bit like sitting in the local take-away. On the plus side I slept well both nights – the bed being comfy and, despite the appearance, the room clean. You’ll find better places though. Both the Heritage Motel and Katoomba in general are somewhat lacking.

Very warm and cozy room, the heaters worked really well. The highlight of this stay was the breakfast, a very nice buffet with a great range, though, when we came out a bit later one day we had to wait 5 mins for a table. Its a bit of a walk from the train station, but very close to a Coles which is great for shopping for meals that you can cook up in the provided microwave in the room. Its not that far from the bus stop that travels around katoomba too.

We had a fantastic time at St Elmos!

ULTRA convenient location if roaming Katoomba Street and visiting its 6 fantastic bookshops (esp. Velvet Fog!) is your thing! We didn't need the car the whole time we stayed!

We stayed in room 22. An interesting little room. Quite a comfy bed complete with electric blankets (absolutely necessary in July!)
Unfortunately our room must have been under a family room and the kids got up just after 5am. After 3 hours of trying to ignore them jumping on the floors and running around like mad things we gave up and went for the breakfast room. (Not managements fault of course, kids will be kids. But if you're not planning on getting up at dawn, an upstairs room would be preferable!)

The free breakfast was the life saver! It cheered me up no end! An ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS breakfast was laid on -
everything your heart desired! I tucked in to a fantasticly thick mushroom omelette, bacon, eggs, HASH BROWNS! (yum!), grilled tomatos with cheese (extra yum!), tea (if only there had been raw sugar all my prayers would be answered ;), various juices. And there was MORE! So much more. Everyone in that room was happy!
I can't say enough about the breakfast. And the young lass who worked non-stop clearing tables, seating guests, refilling trays of delicious food and just generally being friendly and hard working was an absolute star!
Even if you're not staying, go in and buy the breakfast! Its the best!!

We were lucky the second night as the kids had moved on. It was a lovely quiet place, clean and convenient.

We are a young couple and enjoyed our stay. It was a bargain at $106/night including breakfast.
I will be staying here on our next trip to Katoomba without a doubt!

Hint: DON'T go to Katoomba in July!!! Tooo cold!

We arrived in the early evening just in time to see the 'snow'. I was most impressed as had never seen snow before (the locals tell me it was just sleet. Still! A nice thrill on arrival!)

I stayed here with my fiance for two nights during an extended holiday in Australia.
The location of the motel was pretty good, just about a 10 minute walk from Katoomba station, and close lots of shops and restaurants.
We got to the motel around lunch time, and checked in to a friendly but quirky man on the reception. He was helpful, giving us maps and things of the area.
The room was really, really cold, with only a single wall heater, which took ages to heat up. In fairness, Katoomba itself was very cold - snowing, as it was July - but if the heater had been turned on for us arriving it would have warmed the place up, we had booked in advance after all.
Also, the advertised electric blanket was no where to be seen (although it did mysteriously appear on the bed the next day).
The room was pretty clean, which I suuppose is all you really need, although the windows were rather dirty (under the old net curtains).
It was very outdated though, and in desperate need of renovating - with dark wooden panelling on the walls.
The kitchen was well equipped with fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, etc, so you could make basic food if you wanted to.
Katoomba itself had a bit of a old, small town feel - reminded us of groundhog day! The bars all seemed to close by 10pm, so one night we just stayed in with a pizza - I guess the room wasn't that bad, or we wouldn't have done that.
We also used the laundry facilities - big mistake - the washing machine must have been filthy, and lots of our clothes came out dirtier than when they went in - same for the iron and ironing board - don't use!!
We ventured into the games room while waiting for the washing to finish. This was probably a really nice room when built, it had lots of different videa games, a pool table and a ping pong table. They also had those lights that kill flies and things - and clearly hadn't cleaned this room for a while, as there were literally dozens of dead flies on the floor and around the seats.
The breakfast was ok, there was quite a lot of choice but not exactly brilliant. (my fiancee actually gave it a miss the 2nd morning!) This was included in the price of our room, so I can't really complain, but I wouldn't pay for it.
I certainly wouldn't stay here again unless I had no other option, although I must say I think there was two types of rooms.
The rooms on the photos of this motel look more modern than the one we stayed in, and outside there was a sort of courtyard with rooms off, which looked a bit nicer than the rooms inside the main house.
There was a YHA accross the road - I'd reccomend staying there instead!

Quite a good balanced review, although the comments about the manager are rude, uncalled for and unneccesary.
The building is central heated buutb individual rooms have high end electric heaters + reverse cycle air conditioners. Our pracitise was always to turn room heaters on before guests arrived but Enviromental pressures and that fact that the first thing most guests did on arrival was to throw the windows open have stopped this.
Electric blankets are always on the beds but to stop trip hazzards the plugs/controls are tucked inbetween the mattress and base. If we are asked, we can explain. St Elmo is Heritage listed and was oiriginnaly built in the 19th Century, although extensivley renovated the ambience of wood paneling etc have been kept where possible.
We are not able to operate the guest laundry for guests and just like at a High Street Launderette it is their responsability to check the machine is clean before starting, sort their clothes and empty pockets etc, use the right setting and correct amount of soap powder.
Australia has Flies (+ spiders + snakes + lots of other nasties) get over it!
