My friend and I stayed at the Katoomba YHA for two nights in a double room with a private bath in early August. The YHA is located a 10-15 minute walk from the train station, including down and up a hill (so it's somewhat uphill going both directions...). However, that was the only quasi-negative about the YHA. It was located near a grocery store, minutes from many great restaurants, and it was centrally located with respect to the town and the sights, hikes, views, etc.

The front desk was friendly and helpful with advice on discounts, hikes, and activities. The internet and computers were fast and there were enough to go around. The YHA itself is best described as a lodge - the ground floor has lots of couches and comfortable areas for reading near a fireplace, plus the kitchen area and a TV room. There's a deck for grilling or being outside as well. There were many young people there, but also several families.

Most of the rooms are up a flight of stairs. Our room was spotlessly clean, including the bathroom. The room had a nice view, and a heater, which was necessary given the cold nights in August. The bed was comfortable and adequate. We were very happy with the YHA; it was one of the best 'hostels' that I stayed in during a month in Australia.

Rooms were really clean and spacious. Big lounge room and plenty of seating. Staff were so friendly and helpful. The building is a renovated ballroom and has lots of character. Would definitely recommend it as a great place to stay.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights at the end of a five week trip in New Zeland and Australia. The building is very stylish for a YHA and the facilities are great. We book a double on-suite room which was very comfortable. Another plus is the opportunity to cook your own food which helps keep your costs down. The town is great with great walks and sights. I would recommend the YHA and Katoomba as a must for anyone visiting the area. Sydney is about a 90 minute drive and it is also serviced by frequent trains. The Jenolan Caves are another must during a visit to Katoomba, they were possibly the highlight of out whole trip.

I would recommend the YHA to any one on a budget who wants a great base for exploring the Blue Mountains. The beautiful and open common rooms downstairs were exciting in the evening with people of all ages and types cooking dinner and relaxing after a day of taking in the sights.

Location:
The YHA Katoomba has a fantastic location at the southern end of the main part of town. It's just south of a grocery store (Coles) and a liquor store (Liquorland). The main cafe and restaurant district starts here and stretches north to the train station... so pretty much any restaurant is within 10 minutes walk.

Echo point and the Jamison Valley are a little further, but not much... maybe 15 - 20 minutes walk south.

Internet:
The YHA has a free internet room downstairs. If you have your own laptop and would prefer wireless in your room, it costs $15 per day or $1 per 15 minutes (Australian). We opted for wireless and the connection speeds and coverage were good. We were able to upload lots of pictures without too much fuss.

Laundry:
Good laundry facilities in the basement. Detergent costs about $1 and is enough for two loads. One cycle of the washer is $3 (35 minutes) and another $3 for the dryer (45 minutes).

Kitchen facilities:
The YHA has a large and well maintained common kitchen. A large industrial fridge is available for perishables (we stored our wine and beer down there). There was plenty of room for multiple groups to be cooking at the same time. It was fun being down there in the evenings seeing what different folks were cooking up! There's also an extremely large grill in a covered area in the back.

the katoomba yha is very good, i wouldnt usually stay in a YHA becuase they are too expensive, however this was very good.
the 6 dorm room was HUGE and the whole place is spotless.
location is good too. the only down side was the staff who didnt seem that keen to advise me on day trips.

I'm the kind of youth hostel guest the hardcore YHA-stayers probably hate. I hadn't stayed in a youth hostel in 10 years and my memories of sharing a room with 6 others were amusing but better contained in the past.

I booked the youth hostel online to prove a point to my other half (he thinks I am a spendthrift) and booked a double ensuite room. It was great: functional, clean, better-appointed than many of the 3/4 star hotels I have stayed in and incredibly cheap. The thing I had forgotten about YHAs is how sociable people are there; I wished we had stayed there over Christmas rather than in Sydney, as there was much more of a family atmosphere.

There are plenty of internet terminals and all the usual washing facilities, TV rooms, good clean kitchen and a wide range of guests (from the 3 pensioners in the phone queue ("ooh sweetheart I cuddled a koala and betty ran away from a kangaroo!"), to lots of young backpackers and everything in between.

A lovely atmosphere and the blue mountains were spectacular - definitely worth the visit.

This is the best hostel by far!! We were so disappointed to leave this wonderful place. Everything was so clean, no way would you think you're in a hostel. The staff were helpful with everything we needed. I cant fault this place at all, apart from the queue for the showers, but girls being girls its what you expect. I definatley recommend this place and will be staying here again when i return to Australia. The town is quaint but with plenty of things going on. Truly amazing.
