“Great Location, Excellent Food”
Reviewed December 23, 2009

We stayed here for three nights in January as part of a week long trip to the area north of Sydney. It's about a 1.5 hour drive up from the airport and quite easy to find. Check in was quick and they asked us if we wanted to dine in at Darleys, normally closed on Sunday but open as the following was Australia day. Taking the easy way out, we agreed to a booking that night. The room we had was on 1F (second for Americans) and while modest in size, was perfectly adequate for our needs. Bath and storage space were fine. I don't recall turning on the telly. Why bother when you come here and there's so much to see and do? We had a quick lunch by the Lounge, seated outside. Service was attentive and the food, sandwiches and salad, was excellent. Dinner at Darleys was superb. Service, wine and food were excellent. We ended up eating at Darleys twice and the first time was better no doubt due to the enthusiasm of the server. We also ate one night at the grill where I ordered the steak, something I don't eat that often living in Asia but I figured hey, it's Oz so why not? I was not disappointed in either the quality of the meat or the cooking which was as requested, medium-rare. Brekkie is also served in this area. Selection is quite good with the normal cereals, toast and pastries. Additionally one can order a cooked meal, something we both indulged in on our last morning. We did not use the pool, gym or other facilities other than renting a couple of bicycles to wander around town. The concierge(s) were extremely helpful in giving directions, recommended places to go and activities. Plus, they seem to have a vast knowledge of the many trekking trails in the area, what to see and what to skip.

Location is less than 10 minute walk to the lookout point for the Three Sisters and trailhead for the Giant Steps and other short hikes. Some of the better restaurants in Katoomba require a car or cab to reach but that is easily organised. Note that some of the restaurants are also closed for the month given that it's the summer holiday season. A good sign in that they're serving the local trade but for travelers, worth calling ahead.

Okay, good location, nice rooms, excellent food and beverage combined with excellent service covers all my requirements. Highly recommended and do eat at Darleys.

My husband and I stayed at Lilianfels for 2 days and 2 nights after spending 5 days in Sydney. I expected for the price that the rooms would have had some updated bathrooms and a modern TV. Instead, we had an old glass shower stall circa 1950's, a tiny old tv and a poorly stocked mini bar. While we expected the floral decor and classic old world style, I didn't expect that the bathroom and appliances would be so lacking. The pool was beautiful but we had to get towels up at the health spa and bring them down to the pool and food and drink service at the pool was very slow. We ate in the lounge and in the restaurant in the main part of the hotel and both had the exact same menu which was quite average and overpriced.

GRaubenheimer, Hotel Manager at Lilianfels Resort & Spa - Blue Mountains, responded to this review, December 30, 2009
We thank the guests for their comments and I am pleased to inform them that the hotel is currently in the process of updating its Televisions to High Definition LCD's- this unfortunately is a lengthly process as we need to modify the TV Armoires in each room in order to fit a larger LCD screen.
We do have an annual update/refurbishment plan for our rooms and public areas and again I am pleased to let the reviewer know, we are updating the few old shower screens still on property and other necessary items whilst still maintaining the classic Country Manor look and feel.
I was concerned to note the comments about our menu's being the same - our restaurant The Grill does have a different menu to the one we provide in the Lounge- we do offer a catch of the day and a cut of the day option in the Lounge that may have been seen as the same items on offer in The Grill. We always appreciate feedback and again my thanks for your review.

We stayed a Lilianfels for a total of three nights as part of a trip to the Blue Mountains. Our idea was to enjoy the five star luxury of Lilianfels either side of a three day 45km trek through the Blue Mountains with lifesanadventure.com (see separate review).
We arrived late Friday afternoon and we were checked-in and shown to our room with the minimum of fuss. One of the team recommended we make the best of the remaining daylight and take the short walk down to the Queen Elizabeth Lookout at Echo Point to enjoy the spectacular view of the Three Sisters and the Blue Mountains. We were not disappointed!
We ate in The Grill restaurant on Friday night. Great food and huge portions!
On Saturday morning, after an early breakfast, the hotel staff arranged to store our luggage, loan us a couple of pillows and transport us (without charge) in their 4x4 the start of the Six Foot Track ready for our three day 45km trek.
We returned, tired and dirty, on Monday evening. The staff recognised us, greeted us by name, asked if we had enjoyed the trek and welcomed us back. We were taken directly to our room where our stored luggage was waiting. It felt like we had arrived home!
We decided to eat in Katoomba on Monday evening, and having offered a few recommendations, the hotel receptionist kindly arranged for one of the team to drive us there (again without charge).
Tuesday was spa day. Lilianfels has a great outdoor pool, with unbelievable views, and a stylish spa. We both raved about our massages / beauty treatments for several days afterwards.
We ate in Darleys restaurant on Tuesday night. We tried the tasting menu with a matching selection of wines and loved it. Once again, the attention from the team in the restaurant was excellent.
All of the rooms at Lilianfels have an English country house feel. We stayed in two different rooms, a ground floor room and a first floor room. We preferred the room on the first floor as it was larger, warmer and had better views.
This is a great hotel with a really personal level of service. At AUD 320 (Weekday) – AUD 626 (Weekend) including breakfast we felt it offered great value for money.

The rooms would benefit from the addition of a docking station for an ipod / iphone / MP3 player and flat screen TVs (some rooms have them, others have older CRT models).

Take advantage of the staff’s local knowledge and ask them for recommendations of things to do and see in the local area.

Queen Elizabeth Lookout, Echo Point (a short walk from teh hotel)

Bush walking (I would recommend the three day 45km Six Foot Track with lifesanadventure.com)

Hire a 4x4 and explore (Take the dirt roads to the Newnes and visit the Glow Worm Tunnel)

My wife and I stayed at Lilianfels to mark our 41st wedding anniversary. We did the same last year for our 40th. We enjoyed it so much last year, that we decided to return this year.

When we arrived we were made to feel instantly at ease. Everyone was attentive in a very caring, natural way. We really did feel at home. The rooms are large, very well furnished and most comfortable.

As part of our stay we had dinner at the hotel's Darley's restaurant. Again, this was a reprise from last year, and we were not let down in any way. The food and service was outstanding throughout our meal.

We have not encountered better service anywhere else during our travels, and thoroughly recommend Lilianfels and Darley's restaurant to anyone wanting a relaxing and enjoyable time, in beautiful surroundings

We have stayed at Lilianfels on 5 occasions and have always enjoyed ourselves.

Of all the hotels, which we have stayed at over the years, Lilianfels' staff offer the friendliest and most efficient service. Nothing is ever a problem for them.

We can only say the most wonderful things about Lilianfels.

Lilianfels is a beautiful resort which is a throwback to the resorts of yesteryear. The rooms are beautiful and have a warmth and comfort you don't see in many hotels anymore. Whilst I am more partial to Leura than Katoomba, Lilianfels as a resort makes up for anything the town of Katoomba is lacking in. The service was excellent and the restaurant outstanding. I strongly recommend trying out some of the restaurants in Leura for a great dining experience. We visited for a weekend, but will certainly be back. The Blue Mountains as a region is truly stunning and this resort is world class.
