“Warm, Friendly and Comfortable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

Our recent stay at Lilianfels was very enjoyable however on comparing it to several of our stays there over the years, I did feel it had slid a bit on its delivery of service and touch of class.
I think the hotel itself needs some interior refurbishing as it does appear to be a little tired. The hallway and stair carpets seemed to be unvacuumed the whole stay we were there. Some of the staff lacked professionalism and weren't necessarily eager to please the guests. However I did experience some staff members who were outstanding and nothing was a problem.
I think it a shame and rather foolish that the hotel now charges for valet parking. We often found it difficult to find a park, as I feel most of the guests probably felt like we did and begrudged paying for parking. The hotel was forced to park our car one evening as there were no car parks left, so the system backfired on them. I think it is a service the hotel should offer at no charge that ultimately makes the customer feel looked after at no real effort of the hotel.
The breakfast was outstanding every morning and the facilities of the gym and indoor pool, always clean and lovely to use.
I would definitely return there as it is in such good position and has such a lovely feel.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for reviewing your recent experience at Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort and Spa

It’s a pleasure to read that you will defiantly return, and I am taking your points raise. I will be looking into the points re staff, and the interior.

In regards to parking, I do understand your point but we only have a small amount of undercover spots that it needs to charge at a small token of $15.00 per stay otherwise they would fill up first, and I still face the same issue.

I am looking forward to welcome you back to Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort and Spa again in the near future.

We had a lovely stay here, the amenities were great, the kids loved the indoor pool. The lounge area was great to hang out in but the prices of the food were a bit steep. The grounds were beautiful. our room was roomy, comfy and had great views of the blue mountains. We also tried out the spa which is a must do if you go to Lillianfels. We had a great night at Darleys also, we had our own private room which the kids loved, the food was ok, I was let down by my steak it was a bit chewy but overall I would give it another go.

I am sorry to have to agree with previous comments regarding the poor service at Lillianfels - particularly in the lounge, which should be the jewel in this hotel's crown. Our suite was beautiful and very comfortable indeed, and dining at Darley's was exceptional, but the wait staff in the lounge and at breakfast need serious retraining or replacing.

We had a Deluxe Room (standard); it was comfortable, well maintained, 1st class condition; the hotel was terrific, staff were professional, courteous, knowledgeable of the local area. The facilities (indoor pool, billiard room, lounge area etc.) were all very good. Dined at Lilianfel's Darley's restaurant, it was excellent. The only criticism was lack of undercover parking and, given that we were there in winter, it meant an icy car each morning. Minor issue and will not deter us from returning.

I have been staying at Lilianfels for a number of years and have used it for functions and always been delighted with it, but after a weekend there recently in June, it is noticeable that things are on the slide and that is disappointing - as we probably won't bother going back. On the positive side, the rooms are still lovely and comfortable despite their age, the hotel is clean, inviting and the staff that are on duty are friendly and helpful. Dining at Darleys was exceptional - the food was excellent and the revamped dining room lovely. On the downside, you can see that they are under-staffed and shortcuts being taken. One day we were there, a dirty bowl sat outside a room in the hall near the stairs from 7.30am until 2.30pm with nobody bothering to pick it up, despite the fact that staff members / cleaners must have seen it by walking past it as we did a number of times on the way to and from our room. We experienced a series of communication breakdowns from reception and room service that were irritating and could have ruined our weekend if it hadn't been for an excellent babysitter who came at the last moment, and there was no-one to help with bags at night when we arrived. A simple request for a bowl of plain rice with our room service (for our young daughter) was meant with a simple 'no' as in you can't have it and that was pretty extraordinary. A simple request like that would be met even at a motel with simple dining facilities! I understand that Lilianfels is now owned by a private equity group rather than a hotel chain, so perhaps this explains why it feels now that priorities lie elsewhere. Sad as there is no-where really luxury to stay in the main Blue Mountains - it's no wonder Australians end up going and spending their money in luxury hotels overseas.

Room Tip: Valley view rooms are good but won't take extra kids.

We have been staying at this hotel at least once a year since the mid 1990's. Like others we have noted the changes over the years. Always a warm and comfortable place to return to, especially on a cold winters day. It was with great anticipation of a wonderful afternoon tea, that we began to look around for a good spot near the fire - the room was far from busy - and were told by the waiter,in no uncertain terms, that we could not sit there and that the space had been reserved. We were stunned. Suddenly our delightful afternoon had gone sour.
Our consternation had been observed by another more professional member of staff who took our order and apologized for our unceremonious ousting. We sat nearby for nearly 2 hours and only upon leaving did we observe the sacred spot being occupied by a large family.
We travel frequently and never in any hotel in the world have we been ousted from a guest area and treated with such appalling grace. Evidently there have been some incidents where childish guests have fought over proximity to the fire. There are other ways to deal with this other that to take reservations for the lounges, surely. If not, at least inform guests of the protocol and allow seating for the time until the booked party arrives. We watched that area for those two hours and the officious waiter chased away numerous people like a junk yard dog.
The room we had was a valley view room and sad to say it had seen better days. The elegance that was Lilianfels has fallen away to shabbiness, chipped walls and frankly, it was verging on being a bit grubby.
The old faces are still there in the cafe, at the door and thankfully in the form of the waitress who tried to make up for our humiliating experience in the lounge. These people are to be commended. We will probably not go back and although their sister hotel next door is obviously owned by the same company, we found it a much fresher, more professional experience when we went for dinner and asked to see the suites, which were lovely with great views. We will be staying there later this year.

I have been bringing my family to Lilianfels since the 1990s, over 25 separate visits. Although there have been changes over the years, it still retains its relaxed, homely feel with many of the staff familiar faces. The lounge (and open fires in winter) are a favourite relaxing spot, particularly with the wonderful afternoon tea - although this has become more expensive. Sadly, the a la carte breakfast has gone and a simple buffet has replaced it much to the disappointment of my son who rated the eggs benedict as the best. But the gardens are always beautiful, and the position at the edge of the Jamison Valley unparalleled. We keep coming back because we love it - time out from busy lives, enjoying simple things like games of billiards, cards, chess, swimming, tennis, reading in the small library, walks and visiting Leura bookshops. My only complaint is that the mattresses have become progressively more lumpy over the years!

Room Tip: The suites overlooking the Valley are wonderful for a special occasion - but the fog can descend at...

It’s a pleasure to read that you had a great stay, and enjoyed the resort and the facilities. I apologies for the mattress, and I can advise you that all mattresses are getting replaced by the end of the month with brand new Sealy beds.
