4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

We had a good stay here - good price, nice room (private double) and a nice owner. Because there are people working for lodging there were lots of regulars. Having my dishes washed for me was unsettling and I never quite felt comfortable... some work was always going on around me, meaning I couldn't relax. My recommendation would be to limit working hours.

Overall a nice place, good facilities and good people.

This hostel has to be one of the friendliest that we have ever had the pleasure of visiting.

Ross, the owner is always more than happy to offer advice and goes above and beyond to make sure that you have a good time, even providing mulled wine and a meal during our stay.

House rules about keeping Laptops out of common areas from 6pm-9pm meant that it was easy to socialise. The sitting room is really cosy and Ross lights the wood fire on the chilly nights which gives it a really homely feeling.

People with open and friendly personalities will love this place as it's not a 'party' hostel in the sense of crazy drunken shennanigans, but you will have a fantastic fun time. The people who come here don't need artificial dutch courage to talk to each other!

Free tea and coffee was also a massive plus! Would return in a heartbeat.

This place is amazing, me and my partner loved this place.
Ross the owner is so funny and he helped us in our darkest hour!
We traveled to Sydney on Wednesday thinking we could get accomidation and everywhere was fully booked. We went back and he sorted us out and cheered us up!
This place IS NOT for people wanting to party (Drink till you fall over), this place is a place for meeting new people and making good friends.
Highlights: Service with a smile, lots of info on local things to do for FREE!, meeting great people as a result of the no i-Phone/Laptops policy between 6pm & 9pm. Free WI-Fi outside policy hours lol.
This place caters to campers, camper vaners, dorms and doubles meaning you get a really good mix of people. The place feels like a shared house quite a rare find in hostels.
Give the place a try and enjoy a home away from home!

Fun, friendly, cozy! Has a common room full of musical instruments. Is close to the train station. The backyard has a firepit with cushioned benches. If you want, you can tent in the back. Me and my friends loved the interesting paintings and creatively painted walls. The staff let us use their paints and canvases for us to paint a picture & leave our creation behind. We met some great people, had a singalong at night around the fire and tried our hand a the didgeridoo.

Stayed 2 nights at the Flying Fox. Ross, the owner and Alex (main member of staff), clearly care that their guests have a comfortable and happy stay- freshly prepared mulled wine was provided on the house and the very reasonable rent included a fabulous free breakfast (with, for example, good quality bread) and free internet. The kitchen, as well as the rest of the hostel, was kept clean and tidy. Very sociable and friendly atmosphere in the communal areas but the dorms were quiet and I always slept soundly. Both Ross and Alex have a detailed knowledge and experience of walks in the Blue Mountains and provided maps and detailed explanations - had two fantastic walks due to the time and care they took to suggest routes. An excellent hostel with real soul!

This hostel had been recommended to me by various people I had met whilst travelling down Australia's East Coast so even before arriving I had a great feeling about the place. On arrival I was warmly welcomed by the hostel owner who offered me tea and Tim Tam biscuits and immediately I felt at home. There was a roaring log fire in the communal living room in which people were chatting and socializing. The staff were all so friendly and offered me maps and any help I needed for walks in the Blue Mountains. Heading out the back, there was another fire outside and an amazing wooden hut in which people were also sitting chatting and drinking warm mulled wine which had been home made and provided by the owner. My room was a girls dorm which was nice and toasty and there were blankets and doonas available for everybody to use. The place was really clean and although there was such a laid back atmosphere, there was someone hoovering or cleaning every morning so the cleanliness levels were brilliant. The vibe that surrounds this hostel is so rare and incredibly personal, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. The best and most welcoming hostel I have ever stayed at.

We're just back from our amazing trip from the blue mountains, and we absolutely loved flying fox hostel. What's better after a day of hiking to relax with fellow backpackers in front of the fire in the cosy living room? Great atmosphere, quite and clean rooms in which we had the best night rest. We talked all evening with fellow guests, both couples and solo travellers. That living room offers the best context for meeting people! Owner was friendly and helpful in pointing out the good walking tracks.

Make sure you're not in the dorms in the back, they get pretty cold ;)
