Japanese War Cemetery

We came here after seeing the film at the visitor centre about the POW breakout. We had been advised to see the film first & were so pleased we had because it made our visit here & to the breakout site much more meaningful. The Japanese War Cemetery is small but well maintained. Peaceful but at the same time sad. There is also a small adjacent section for Australian soldiers.

Its only a 5 minute drive from the Japanese Gardens so if it is on your way, a brief stop can be rewarding in terms of remembering the dead, but if you are short of time, you are not missing much in not visiting. There are small plaques in the ground naming individual Japanese soldiers (from across the Pacific, not only the Cowra breakout), with the most poignant plaque referring to unknown soldiers. If you would really like to honour the fallen soldiers, there is a service in the grounds on the Sunday after the Cherry Blossom Festival each year.

This cemetery is kept so very neat and tidy. It is a very peaceful place to visit. I loved the altar with all the offerings on it.
