well i too loved surfside, went with Ozintro and was very happy with the 12 bed dorm, had washing machine, excellent beach, access across the road, quality kiosk next to bus station, great transport links, friendly staff, highly reccommend, cant wait to return, huge t.v with sky/satellite, what more could you want...FIVOS below surfside is the best food i ate in the whole 3 months i spent throughout Oz!!! % dollars a steak or chicken with chips and salad, miss that steak soo much :(

Well im not sure what all the bad reviews are about cus i absolutely loved this place!! Went with an OzIntro Group & shared a 12 bed dorm - its a hostel guys so its going to be basic! Location great! & the best bar/cafe is just downstairs-fivos-meals for 5 dollars-amazing.
There was a large group of us & had a laugh, & thought it was a good base by the beach in Sydney! The facilities were fine, i really dont know why there are so many bad reviews??? As a travel agent myself i would definetely recommend this hostel!

The hostel is in a great location, thats about the only good thing I can say about the place. The stairs are a nightmare to climb with your bags, way too steep.

It was the first hostel I had ever stayed in so therefore I can't compare it to anywhere else yet. I stayed there for 2 weeks leading up to xmas and then left (the price was increasing to about $35 per night) and certainly wasn't value for money.

I did meet some really nice people here and have a good laugh but some people were quite cliquey, especially the girls who were travelling in groups, they are not really interested in talking to you. The dorms are tiny I think they squeeze as many bunkbeds in the rooms as they possibly can and if you do stay there avoid the verandah dorms like the plague, the blacony area is where everyones sits at night and you get ZERO sleep. Not a good idea to work whilst living here its is definately a party hostel and the social side can be quite good if thats what you are looking for. Everyone congregates in the t.v. room but the sofas have definately saw better days, they absolutely stink.

The general age is about 20 ish, and some of them can be really loud and generally quite annoying (which was probably my problem maybe I should have stuck to the YHA). There are definatley more english people here than another other nationality. All in all it wasn't a bad place to stay depending on what you are looking for.

The staff were mainly made up of travellers apart from one, friendly enough but didn't really blow me away............and again very cliquey.

Found this place through the Lonely Planet and needed a place on my travels, backpacking around on the East coast. Yes, it's nicely located on the sea front (and above McDonalds if you're into that sort of thing). But boy was this place packed and you don't get a lot for your money.

Cramped accommodation - quite a few travellers said they hadn't stayed in dorms this small. The kitchen is about the size of a small car and given the number of people who were staying there, it was far too small. Also be careful of food getting pinched, everyone had bought a lockable bag it had got so bad. Avoid Christmas/New Year time unless you book ahead - it's horrendously busy.

Cliquey groups - loads of people there had been living there for several months and had therefore made their own groups. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone travelling by themselves who wants to meet new people - most were more concerned with what time their favourite TV show was on.

Loud - apart from the relatively small communal sitting area, there is nowhere for everyone to socailaise. Therefore you tend to get a lot of people hanging around on the veranda (outside people's dorms) so if you like to occassionally get some sleep, this is not the place for you.

Kids club - Everyone here is about 20yrs old, either from England, Ireland or Scotland and spends every night night getting drunk. Ok, I'm slightly older (not much though!) and it just got wearing after a while.

All in all, not the best. Spoke to quite a few people who said this is not your normal hostel and I think the management do quite nicely out of appearing in the Lonely Planet so 'if it ain't broke, why fix it?'. If you want close proximity to Coogee beach, a drink every night and no sleep in cramped accommodation, this is the place for you. If the factors highlighted above bother you, look elsewhere. (By the way, I hear Wizard of Oz is fairly similar too)

horrible hostel. they claim to be the only beachfront hostel in coogee, but the place stinks. rooms are small and cramped. they have an 8am check out time which makes it almost impossible to check out without being charged for half a day extra and losing your deposit. the rooms are very stuff and not well ventilated. both rooms i stayed in smelled like feet, and it was definitely not the people in the room. they will trick you into buying 1 week at a time for lower prices, dont fall for it. you will regret it.

I went to Coogee in 2001, I was advised to go there by fellow travellers. I stayed at Surfside Backpackers for 3 and a half months.I found this hostel the friendliest place I stayed in, they organise activities weekly. the hostel has everything a traveller needs. There is a hude notice board that offers local jobs, lifts around the country - handy if like me are a solo traveller, cars, phones, surfboards etc for sale.the location is amazing. between 2 fab pubs and right opposite the beach, when I was there we had a shark alert, never seen anthing like that before.I spent christmas there as I had made so many friends, BBQ on the beach, kegs of beer and 17 cartons of cheap red wine and the whole hostel.all I can say is AMAZING TIMESi recommend everyone to go there. I will go back one day.life is out there guys go and find it. xxxxx
