There's a risk in beachside cafes. On the one hand, they often get it right. They're often locals who have a passion for good food and good coffee and just love the smell of orange juice in the morning; on the other, more outstretched hand, they're in the greatest location and thus, don't really need to do much. Do just enough to get repeat business and you'll survive with the tourists anyway.
Which is exactly what the Coogee Court Yard does; the food is fine, the atmosphere is homely - you can smell the salt from the coogee beach! - but the service...mmm, questionable. Why oh why do I feel like i'm doing them a favour by sitting there?! I wanted desperately for another coffee, but after they'd given us our breakfast and initial drinks, we were never checked on again. I could have died at that table and they seemingly wouldn't have cared until it was time to split the bill. I basically popped out my shoulder trying to get their attention.
Even more frustrating was, as soon as you stand up, they're over there like hounds clearing your table for the next customers.
Cookie-cutter at best.
