“Fine, OK, Not Bad, Alright - You Get The Idea!”
Reviewed June 25, 2008

This hotel/motel is OK - not great, not bad just OK. It's well located right in the heart of Cessnock with supermarkets and shopping centres and the main drag of Cessnock about a minutes walk away.

The hotel is modern and rather characterless/souless. The rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet and have everything you need and that's really it. As another reviewer said - 'a good place to overnight in' on the way to somewhere else. Don't stay here if you are looking to be inspired by the wine country of the Hunter Valley.

I should add that the lady at reception was very friendly and welcoming but it would be great if they could just inject the place with a little more character - maybe I have too high expectations of Best Western?

Comfortable hotel but nothing special. Good for an overnight stay. Just what I would expect from a Best Western. Clean room with everything you could want for a short stay>

Travelled down from Sydney to stay in this motel for one night. It was a weekday so it was relatively cheap. Arrived in the late afternoon and check in was very fast and promt. Reception closes at 8:30pm and re-opens at 6:30am. Anytime after these hours require the room access card. Room was quite large, contained a sofa bed along with a queen size bed which was clean and two tv's. Overall the room was well furnished. The hotel is situated right next to the local shopping centres with a supporters club right situated right across.
Ate dinner the the chinese restaurant in the club. It was rather pricey and didn't taste extremely good. Was rather disappointed with it.
The only problem with the room was there was a noise from the air ventilator in the bathroom that continued for the whole night. It's a great budget hotel and value for money.

Stayed here on an impromptu weekend when everything was booked out. Only cost $140 for one night and that was on a long weekend. All in all I would say it is excellent value. The room was clean and recently renovated; the bed was really comfortable and the room was quiet. Didn't try the breakfast as we opted for one of the local wineries. There are no real dining options nearby so it is best to go to a winery about 10 minutes out of town and get a cab back ($15-20). All in all it's great value in a great part of Australia.

The Motor Inn is a newly opened modern hotel in the centre of Cessnock. The reception and rooms were immaculate and well furnished. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable locals who helped us arrange our wine tasting tours. The continental breakfast was a little disappointing but cheap.

The hotel is operated by the owners of the rugby supporters club just over the road. All residents are granted temporary membership of the club for the duration of their stay. Cessnock isn't the most lively of places and the club was easily the best place to spend the evenings with good food and a live band.

Cessnock is a small town and this hotel was much better than we'd expected to find. A good base for exploring the Hunter Valley.

We reserved two Deluxe rooms - a Queen and a Twin. The Twin was a slightly larger room but both were compact. An Executive room is avalable and is more spacious. The current room rate for the Deluxe (Thurs and Fri night) is $130 AUD per night. The rooms are very contemporary, with original artworks and nice dark wood furniture and chairs. The bedding in the rooms comprised of very comfortable mattresses and excellent pillows, crisp white linen covered doonas with olive taffeta throws and a decorative pillow. The windows were covered in a matching organza curtain. Very nice indeed for the discerning traveller.

Breakfast is available in a dining room on the premises on Saturday and Sunday for only $10 each. The breakfast comprised of a selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, coffee and tea and toast and jams. Simple but healthy. On other mornings a breakfast box consisting of juice, muffin, cereal, fruit salad and milk can be reserved via reception for $10 also.

The hotel is located opposite the Cessnock Supporters Club and surrounding shops and supermarkets. The motel room, despite the location, is completely noise free. The Chinese restaurant in the Club is quite pleasant too.

You will have a very comfortable rest here. Recommended to those who just wish to stay in the area but do not want romantic luxury. Just a practical stay in the area. The motel is located about 10 minutes away from the Hunter Valley Gardens tourist attraction.

We accepted an invtitation to a friend's wedding in Pokolbin, and then had to find reasonable accommodation for one night only. Easier said than done in "Hunter Wine Country" where the accommodation is geared towards weekends away and most properties have a 2 night minimum rule.

So we looked at Cessnock and found the newish Best Western motel (it opened in November 2005). The motel is owned by the local leagues (sport) club and you get access to the club as part of your stay, but we didn't have an opportunity to visit so can't comment on this.

The room was clean, quiet and had everything we needed, and the motel is not that far from the wine region. A buffet breakfast was available the next meeting. All up, it was a good alternative and met our needs and our budget.

  • Liked — It met our budget.
  • Disliked — The bed was a bit hard.
  • Tips/Secrets — If you're worried about noise, ask for a room away from the club.
