Well you have to admire a menu where virtually every dish is either chicken or steak (plus as a token one fish & one pork dish). I tried the chicken schnitzel one day and whilst of substantial size, it had been well overcooked and so it was a case of rescuing the edible bits. On another occasion I tried the steak, asked for medium-rare but it came rare, which was OK if a bit gristly. Chips were frozen not freshly cut, and salad was a bit boring. Later discovered that the Mt Lyell Motor Inn did much better food (in less sumptuous surroundings however) just over the road.
Overall conclusion: Standard pub food.

The hotel is generally staffed by one person. You check in at the bar once she has time. The hotel is very old and shows it. The room was clean and comfortable. Nearly all businesses in Queenstown are for sale. Several are closed.

Room Tip: Skip Queenstown as there is nothing here.

We were touring Tasmania and stopped at Queenstown on a Sunday.Nothing else was open for lunch except for the Empire Hotel. Well, what a find, 3 of us had the roast + white chocolate fondant with blueberries for dessert which was absolutely delicious. It was a bargain for $17. I was so impressed with the dessert I have asked the hotel for a copy of the recipe. (still waiting for it) The Empire was once a grand hotel but could do with a little TLC. The staff were friendly and helpful. If I was passing that way again I would definitely stop off at the Empire Hotel.

we had a private room for 3 which was veryyyy cheap (50$)
The hostel is not renovated : paints is fading away, rust on the taps, light flickering. You don't come here for the modernity!
you can see that it used to be a great hotel, with spacious staircase and paintings on the walls.

An out of time experience!

you're in the center of queenstown, which is a start. But there is really not much there anymore.

Stayed one night, single room was clean, but freezing. Slept in my sleeping bag under the bed covers. Was warm enough then. Shower was very clean, one night for a single cost $35. Good value, I'd stay again.

I've read other comments by previous reviews, BUT I can't help but say, everyone's expectations are different. We knew beforehand that this was one of the oldest pub hotels around Australia, so you expect that well, yes the hotel is old.... Checked in at the bar, novel.... and went to our room. We booked an en-suite room with double bed. The room size was good, overlooking the railway station. Inspection of the bathroom, well, it really needed some doing up, it looked tired, but the water flowed, the toilet flushed and the shower, well it showered. Restaurant downstairs was very pleasant and oldie worldie, food was good, not fantastic, but the service you could not fault. Other reviewers were quick to criticise this hotel, but for the price you pay we were both very happy with what we received. One guest (an American tourist travelling on a budget) commented, don't have the breakfast, it's awful. HELLO Wake Up, have you never heard of a continental breakfast? that is what you get and really there was nothing wrong with the continental breakfast during our stay, it's a continental breakfast in a budget pub hotel! Loved the stay, had some charming atmosphere, but the bathroom we had (Room 2) needs updating, but did not deter us from our experience here!

I was recently on holidays in Tasmania with my husband, cousin and her husband and called into the Empire Hotel in Queenstown for lunch. Never again, it was absolutely terrible, I had a piece of dried up crumbed chicken and some chips for $19, !!!!!!! I was horrified when the waitress presented it, I should of refused it, there is no way I would ever go back or recommend the Empire Hotel for meals.
