After arriving to early to go to our B&B we called in here for a pint after a long days walking the Coast to Coast path.
The welcome from the bar maid was very good, we enquired about an evening meal and the bar staff informed us it was best to book, which we did.
Went back to the pub about 6.00 p.m. and the landlord was behind the bar, what a difference! No welcome, he ignored us and we had to take a menu from the bar and ask to be served.
Ordered a steak pie with veg and gravy, which we were really looking forward to, however when it arrived it was just a normal steak pie (like you get from the supermarket) very disappointing and with a price tag of £10, not worth it at all.The pub was not busy, so really no need to book.
Overall the landlord could learn much from his staff about the art of welcoming guests into the establishment.

Stayed here on our coast to coast walk. Our room was clean and peaceful. The proprietors were easy to deal with. One was more shy (maybe even a little awkward), but was kind and helped us with what we needed. The other was very friendly and chatty and enjoyed meeting and talking to the guests. The food was good, and the atmosphere kind. We mostly enjoyed our room which was very clean and very peaceful at night while we had the ceiling windows open.

They seem well set up for b&b guests, but if you're camping don't expect to be treated like guests. We had a very wet night under canvas followed by an unexpectedly cold reception at the pub when we enquired after a hot drink. Despite the guide books saying we could get breakfast this was never offered and we were pointedly locked out of the pub until lunchtime in the rain.
They really need to rethink their attitude to campers and not treat them like second class citizens! We will not be going back.

I cannot understand the moaning from some reviewers - did they stay in a pub of the same name but in a parallel universe? The landlord (Steve) and his wife Gill are firendly, chatty and keen to please, the food is good and not overly expensive (whoever complained of a £9.50 dinner needs to get about more often!). The real ales are always top notch ad the locals are friendly - especially the ladies' darts team!

Go and enjoy the place and ignore those who seek perfection coupled with cheapness...you cannot have both, so go for perfection an you won't be disappointed.

Decided to give pub once last chance and it failed again, Won't go back Beautiful weather, lunch time, renovations now very good apart from scroopy chairs on stone floor - no hospitality or service whatsoever! Ignored by landlord!!

Stayed for one night after attending evening exhibition in Northallerton. Steve and Gill the owners made me feel very welcome as did the locals.Great selection of local Ales. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The full english breakfast the next morning set me up for the day. Will definitely be returning.

Eighteen of us (ages one to forty) visited the White Swan for Sunday lunch at the end of September to celebrate my 40th birthday. Steve and Gill laid on a top notch spread, which everyone enjoyed, and served some excellent well-kept beers from Wall's Brewery (just down the road in Northallerton). It was a most memorable and enjoyable day, and I heartily recommend the White Swan's hospitality to anyone in the vicinity.
