March 20, 2013 after travelling all day we planned to reach Airlie Beach to overnight on our journey to Cairns. On checking in at the Airlie Beach Hotel around 7:30 pm , the staff person on reception informed us to keep the door closed when showering. She said that the smoke alarms accidentally go off from the steam when you shower if you leave the bathroom door open . That was OK but I queried why management had not fixed the problem and had the alarms relocated. No answer.... Just a LOOK.
She then asked me sign a form agreeing to pay nearly $1200 if the alarms went off and the fire services responded . I was absolutely shocked and I refused to sign as I believed that the demand was not legal or at all reasonable. She then said if you don't sign then you cant stay here and abruptly tore up the registration paperwork and threw it into the waste bin.
My wife and I are in our 60,s and have never been treated like that in our lives. We went off to find alternative accommodation for the night.More
