We arrived in Airlie Beach at 5AM after traveling all through the night. We were told the reception opens at 7AM, so at 7 we went there and were then told we couldn't check in until 1PM. We were never informed about this check-in time, which maybe it was just our fault for not thinking of it, but I assumed since backpackers get in at odd times often that they would have an earlier check in time, but no, so we slept on park benches outside the hostel until 1 and then checked in, but we were able to keep our luggage stored in their back room free of charge. (not sure if it's supposed to be free because it says they charge you, but at that time they said nothing to us)
Then when we checked in, the woman was a litttle bit snippy with us but it was fine, whatever. Then we went to our room, and were a little surprised...It's kind of like a jail cell. Some might refer to it as "cozy" Haha, it wasn't too bad I was just traveling with one other close friend so we didn't mind sharing a bed and weren't planning on spending too much time in the room so whatever, we weren't too worried.
After a day there started to get a lot of ants in our room, but I think this might just be because we left some empty wine bottles in the room.
YOU HEAR EVERYYYYYYYYYTHING!!!!!!! We could clearly hear couples in the room next to us "getting intimate". Not fun. And also in the mornings a lot of people leave early to go on day trips, and if you are trying to sleep in past 7 or 8, good luck! The people are soooo loud! Slamming doors, talking loudly, but the sound carries so much in this place so it's not entirely their fault.
The showers aren't horrible, they're okay. You just try not to touch the walls. Haha, no it's not that bad, they're really not bad for a hostel, bathrooms aren't bad either.
There's a nice balcony you can go out on to meet other people staying in the hostel. Most of the groups of rooms have door out to the balcony.
Beware of thefts!!! Especially with the dining set!! You have to pay $20 for a dining set with 7 different utensils, and if you lose one of them, you lose your whole deposit. My friend left her cup in the kitchen for 30 seconds and then she realized she left it there, when she came back, another girl was already using it!! And her fork got stolen also, but we just took one from one of the boats we were on so that was easily replacable.
Also in the kitchen they have a fridge that everyone can put food in and some of our cheese was stolen...so beware to put food in there.
The kitchen is really a mess!! Hardly anyone cleans their dishes properly. It's really quite gross. I think almost anyone who stayed there can at least agree with me on that...
When we checked out the woman at the counter was realllllly nice!! They were really friendly and helpful then!! I really appreciated that.
I don't think $30 per person was a good price for our tiny room!!
This place is also really close to the bars, yet it's far enough away that you can sleep at night and you have a great view of the water. It's a perfect location.
It was okay for what we needed it for, but I would probably not want to go there again.
