“Had its goods and its bads...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2010

We arrived in Airlie Beach at 5AM after traveling all through the night. We were told the reception opens at 7AM, so at 7 we went there and were then told we couldn't check in until 1PM. We were never informed about this check-in time, which maybe it was just our fault for not thinking of it, but I assumed since backpackers get in at odd times often that they would have an earlier check in time, but no, so we slept on park benches outside the hostel until 1 and then checked in, but we were able to keep our luggage stored in their back room free of charge. (not sure if it's supposed to be free because it says they charge you, but at that time they said nothing to us)
Then when we checked in, the woman was a litttle bit snippy with us but it was fine, whatever. Then we went to our room, and were a little surprised...It's kind of like a jail cell. Some might refer to it as "cozy" Haha, it wasn't too bad I was just traveling with one other close friend so we didn't mind sharing a bed and weren't planning on spending too much time in the room so whatever, we weren't too worried.
After a day there started to get a lot of ants in our room, but I think this might just be because we left some empty wine bottles in the room.
YOU HEAR EVERYYYYYYYYYTHING!!!!!!! We could clearly hear couples in the room next to us "getting intimate". Not fun. And also in the mornings a lot of people leave early to go on day trips, and if you are trying to sleep in past 7 or 8, good luck! The people are soooo loud! Slamming doors, talking loudly, but the sound carries so much in this place so it's not entirely their fault.
The showers aren't horrible, they're okay. You just try not to touch the walls. Haha, no it's not that bad, they're really not bad for a hostel, bathrooms aren't bad either.
There's a nice balcony you can go out on to meet other people staying in the hostel. Most of the groups of rooms have door out to the balcony.
Beware of thefts!!! Especially with the dining set!! You have to pay $20 for a dining set with 7 different utensils, and if you lose one of them, you lose your whole deposit. My friend left her cup in the kitchen for 30 seconds and then she realized she left it there, when she came back, another girl was already using it!! And her fork got stolen also, but we just took one from one of the boats we were on so that was easily replacable.
Also in the kitchen they have a fridge that everyone can put food in and some of our cheese was stolen...so beware to put food in there.
The kitchen is really a mess!! Hardly anyone cleans their dishes properly. It's really quite gross. I think almost anyone who stayed there can at least agree with me on that...
When we checked out the woman at the counter was realllllly nice!! They were really friendly and helpful then!! I really appreciated that.
I don't think $30 per person was a good price for our tiny room!!
This place is also really close to the bars, yet it's far enough away that you can sleep at night and you have a great view of the water. It's a perfect location.
It was okay for what we needed it for, but I would probably not want to go there again.

Oh my god! Having just spend 25 days touring eastcoast Australia, this was without a doubt the worst place we spent the night. The staff was rude, the rooms are on top of a food court and close to bars making sleeping difficult. The cleanliness and general state of the ensuite double room was not anywhere near the quality the price would indicate. I will highly recommend anybody to choose any other hostel in Airlie.

I only have good things to say about this hostel. Good value for money, we stayed one night in a private double and one night in a ten bed dorm, and both were excellent. Clean, roomy and plenty of showers and toilets for everyone. If you book your Whitsunday trip through them they'll give you a free night's accommodation.

It's not a party hostel like Koalas round the corner, so you can go out and party but when you want to sleep you actually can.

Staff were friendly too - would definitely reccommend!

Good enough, my room looked to be one of the best (when I see other reviews ...) and was comfortable, 8 beds, 2 showers ensuite, 1 toilet ensuite, aircon. Quiet room as well.
Minimum accessories in the kitchen, need to rent cutlery set at the reception.
Globally clean.
Reception has uncomfortable opening time (open from 8am to 7pm I think)

But I'm pretty sure one of the other rooms must be exactly the opposite. If you want some comfort, you may need to pay an extra and ask that 8 bed-room.

We have just checked into our ensuite double having spent the night in a hostel at mission beach. This modern hostel is located right in the heart of the main waterfront area, the rooms are in corridors which lead off from a central area which has internet cafe, bars, restaurants etc so you are literally a few steps away from anything you need. The best things so far are the room which is sooo clean, spacious and modern (flatscreen TV, towels & balcony in a hostel!?!?!) and the staff who have been so friendly and managed to book us onto a whitsunday cruise for tomorrow very late in the day. I do not see how you could fail to be very impressed here. We stayed in a resort in cairns that wasn't as good as this and cost twice as much.

Great location. Rooms are very clean and comfortable beds. Good facilities. I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm with a gorgeous sea view (ask for that room if possible) which was very good. AUD30 per night which can be costly if staying a long time but I preferred it to the YHA.

Can only recommend this backpackers. We stayed also in other backpakers in Airlie Beach, but this one had the friendliest service and the best value for money.
