“Great for all types of travellers!”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

I recently stayed at Base in Airlie (5 nights, October 2013). I have never stayed in 'Backpacker' style accommodation before, but was convinced by a friend who told me Base is a great low cost option, especially when you're just looking for somewhere to crash after a long day.
Our check in experience was great - very efficient and all of the staff very helpful. Got lots of great recommendations for activities and made last minute bookings quickly at the desk. All of the activities in our 6 day trip were either organised or recommended by Base staff.
We stayed in a twin-share private room with ensuite which was very basic but comfortable. The ensuite had a bit of wear and tear but was clean and a good size for two people. Kitchenette is very basic, but I don't think you would ever use it for anything other than the odd cup of the coffee or the large fridge - you can walk about 20 m to a $10 steak and pint at Down Under Bar. Each room had a balcony overlooking the resort - very leafy and private, although not totally private as we did manage to spot a naked dude hanging out on his balcony. Added bonus!
The resort itself was very quiet - noise was my primary objection to staying in backpacker accommodation but everything is quite well spaced so you don't hear much. The Resort is also in a fabulous location right on the main street and within walking distance of anything you would need.
Overall, I had a great time at Base and would definitely stay again!

Base Airlie Beach was a fantastic place to stay: great location (less than a minute from the main street with the bars and lagoon), pretty nice rooms and very friendly staff. I went with 3 other friends and were really only looking for a place to recouperate for a few hours after a night out, but the rooms were much better than we expected, very spacious, pretty clean and quite comfortable beds! The staff we're fantastic too, even catering for other friends who showed up after reception hours with a broken down campervan, offering them free meal vouchers and a room for the night. The staff also helped the great atmosphere in the resort, where it was all pretty chilled! the hostel is definitely value for money and the best spot to stay in Airlie if your up for a good time!

Base Airlie Beach is a good place, but could be an awesome place. The staff is helpful, the rooms are big, the beds are good and new, and the infrastructure is great. But there are a few things that need improvement, like the curtains. The ones in my bedroom were dirty and full of something that looks like a bug's egg. Disgusting. Why not use blinds? It is also easier to clean.
The air conditioner was functioning, but it was old and broken. The shower was also old; the closet had no hangers... Simple things that could make things better to guests.

Dear Guest,

We appreciate the time it has taken for you to provide us with your feedback. Happy to hear that for the most part your stay was an enjoyable one. In regards to the curtains you are correct, and currently we're in the process of changing parts of the room to blinds. A few of our privates and 4 bed dorms have already been converted. As well as re-sealing of baths/showers and grouting, re-painting and servicing of airconditioners when rooms are not in use. As you could understand this is a process and does take time but we are trying nearing the peak season. Further, because we are a hostel we do not provide hangers for rooms as the length of stay is usually only 1 or 2 nights and most guests would not use them. However, I shall take the feedback into consideration. We hope you enjoy the next stop and please be sure to come back at some point on your next travels to australia and visit us again.

Kind Regards,

Aotea RM

The Base hostel is really nice, clean and I have no complaints. I would definitely stay here again especially after seeing some of the other more party hostels. There is a bar close by but you can also get a good night sleep. The rooms are great with an ensuite, air con and comfy beds. The only thing I couldn't understand was the 'kitchen' area, at a first glance you'd think yes can cook in here or at least make tea. All there was was a sink and then this huge work top area with locked cupboards. They could easily have put in an extra bunk or made the kitchen a kitchen!

Dear Guest,

Always music to our ears to hear that our guests have enjoyed their stay. I'm pleased that you're one that has.

In regards to the 'kitchenette' in our rooms. This is only a space one can store items that do not wish to be stored in our communal kitchen area located behind reception as a convenience to our guests. As well as a little work area for those that my wish to use their laptops. I apologise if you may have found this an inconvenience.

However, I do hope that Base Airlie Beach has left you with many wonderful memories and we hope to see you again in the future.

Kind Regards,

We had a nice stay at the Base Resort.
Staff was friendly, approachable and helpful. We had a few maintenance issues but they were delt with really fast and friendly.

Our private room was spacious and freshly painted. A bit of a shame there were no hot plates or a microwave in the kitchen area. Especially for the price you pay for these kind of rooms. Instead Base has opted for a massive amount of cupboard space. Filled with absolutely no kitchen utensils...this might be handy in a dorm room, but really was a bit weird for a private one. The fridge however did work very well, even though it sounded like a wind tunnel and kept us awake the first night (we unplugged it during the other nights).

The pool area was nice and relaxing. Decent size as well for a backpackers.

Level of cleanliness of the rooms was rather unsatisfactory. The floor felt really grimey and our feet turned literally black from walking around in the room. Windows and more importantly windows hadn't been cleaned. Sinks needed a good scrub and cupboards hadn't been cleaned in ages.

We do however know that lots of hostels struggle with cleanliness. Sadly, it's one of the many downfalls of counting on people working in return for accomodation...

Base Airlie Beach is a rather average hostel. Great location, nice pool, nice staff, average rooms and poor cleanliness. I'm sure you can end up in way worse places though! (Like the Sleeping Inn in Surfers Paradise for example)

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for leaving us with some feedback regarding your stay.

We are very pleased to hear that you received great service from staff and enjoyed the layout of our hostel. However, displeased that the cleanliness of your room you found unsatisfactory. With a high volume of guests and a short time to turn over rooms at times things can be missed but this should still be no excuse and will be addressed with the staff.

In regards to the cupboards not having utensils in the private rooms there is a reason for this. As this area is only a kitchenette to be used for tea and coffee. There are cooking facilities located in the communal kitchen out behind reception for this use (with the appropriate fire safety).

I hope that you are enjoying your travels and be sure to come visit us again sometime in the future.

Kind Regards,

Aotea RM

Great rooms, very helpful staff. There was a bit of a party going on in the campsite when I arrived, but they sorted it out quickly and I had a great sleep. The room I stayed in had brand new beds and a big bathtub - perfect place to recover after a long sailing trip. Very happy

I stayed here for 3 nights before I left on a boat cruise for the Whitsunday's. The staff are very helpful and it was a very chilled hostel. You have to put a deposit down if you want to use the cutlery but as a lot may go missing i guess this is understandable. Unfortunately we overheard in reception that some one had 'relieved' themselves in the pool and that the chlorine level is too high, looking at the pool it looked murky so I don't think i would advise that you go in here, go to the free shared pools in Airlie beach they are much cleaner. The rooms are spacious and have a nice en suite. There are however a lot of ants crawling the walls and the beds are quite squeaky so you hear every movement but its still quite clean. I met some lovely people here and great party atmosphere in the bar, nightlife tends to be fairly Q round Airlie beach but still lots of fun. Overall I would recommend this place to backpackers and its certainly one of the better Base Backpacker hotels I have stayed in.

Dear Guest,

We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I am glad to hear that you found your stay comfortable and room clean. My apologies about the ants. Unfortunately being tropical north qld this is a constant issue regardless of daily spraying (they must now have an immunity). Also, our maintenance team clean the pool daily and a professional pool cleaner once a week. However, I'm confused about the deposit you said you paid for cutlery? We have not had that for several months? Overall, we're pleased you enjoyed your stay and we hope to have you back again sometime in the future.

Kind Regards,
