Waterview Airlie Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 18, 2013

Just returned home today after 4 nights in picturesque Airlie Beach.... After what turned into an interesting journey to Airlie (thanks Tiger...not!) we were greeted by a beautiful little ball of fluff (Fifi) and a hard working man (Bill) who checked us into our beautiful, modern and comfortable apartment at the Waterview Airlie Beach.... Our apartment was very well appointed, quality furnishings, comfortable bed, very clean, amazing view of Airlie Beach and a two minute walk to the lagoon and the main street, but far enough away from the Schoolies and the late night pubs and bars. We have travelled extensively overseas and a nicer proprietor you could not find, helpful, friendly and welcoming...and apart for all of this, the price per night is such a bargain for the location, view and comforts. Thanks Bill, Jen and Fifi for a wonderful break away. Kindest Regards Chris and Lisa

Stayed here for 6 nights in Nov. Great welcome from Bill, owner, who was a great host. Split our stay by a cruise in the Whitsunday Isles, so stayed in 2 separate apartments. Both were tastefully furnished, modern style, spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Lots of hot water, great shower, and comfortable bed.Kitchen was fitted with cooktop, fridge/ freezer, microwave and plenty of pots, dishes, glasses, cutlery. Each apartment has its own balcony with incredible sea views, ESP the front building. Sits on top of hill overlooking the town, so minutes walk away but thankfully, away from the noise of the backpacker pubs lining the Main Street. Our scheduled cruise was cancelled after arrival in Airlie Beach and company apologized but were unable to offer any alternate. We were not happy, as this was one of the main reasons for coming up here. Bill came to the rescue and found us another cruise, even switching up our pre booked dates at his place to accommodate this last minute change. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms 1,2,3 and 4 are at the front and seem to have best views

We stayed one night prior to a catamaran cruise. Superbly sited, it sits on a small hill looking down the main street and just a short walk from the marina. There are steep steps directly down to the road in the town, the alternative being a quarter mile walk around the hill. The room was very modern and comfortable and everything functioned. A simple balcony with table and deck chairs allowed us to enjoy a bottle of wine, watch the sun go down over the town and the bay, listen to the parrots flying into the trees along the beach below, and also to the drunks in one of the bars on the main street. Happily, the parrots were louder than the drunks.
Bill the manager was extremely helpful, giving us a ride into town with our luggage when we left and he came up with excellent recommendations for breakfast and dinner. His preference for the AFL over Rugby League confirmed his overall wisdom and judgement.

I will detail some bits about the apartments below, however overall the apartments have a fantastic location, near to town, great views and able to walk to/from the lagoon and some bars and cafes nearby. The apartments are fine and would suit most travellers. However it seems to be a backpackers town, and other than going on day trips to islands or sunbathing by the lagoon there doesn't seem much to do.

On check in to the apartments, we were greated by Bill. He took my payment and helped us with our bags. Showing us to our room, he briefly showed us where everything was and made to leave. "Oh, by the way," he says, "the fan in the main bedroom (where my 67yr old mother was sleeping) is broken." Upon inquiring as to when it is likely to be fixed, he looked strangely at my mother, told her "Well, the electrician HAS been called..." and that was that. So her options were to try and work out all the different settings on the air con remote (seemed old air cons but worked fine) so as to not freeze, or boil in her room at night. As a result, she was hot and bothered and didn't sleep much. No apology, no money off room, no update of when electrician coming. My pull out bed was just shocking, it made very loud creaks every time I shifted in bed, plus uncomfortable. Got refund for pull out bed. Bathroom backed onto the back of office maybe, or the cleaners room, all I know is that people can see right in the bathroom if the windows is open, hear everything that is going on in there, plus you can hear them talking about "dragging all the s**t down from room 4". Nice.
On the whole I wouldn't go back to Airlie Beach unless I wanted to spend a small fortune on daytrips to the islands, or I wanted to get drunk every night.

Pros....

The view is spectacular. The air con worked well.Plenty of hot water. Small fridge fine to chill water. TV worked fine. Bed in room comfortable, staff seemed pleasant but didn't really get to talk to them much other than checking in/out.

Now the cons...
The sofa bed, charged $20 a night most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on. Got a refund, but still had to make a trip to the chiropractor when I got home, plus a very uncomfortable 4hr drive home. Dining chairs had dust all over them, I cleaned before I sat down. Stray long hairs in shower. Terrible artwork on walls. The "car park" cannot accommodate more than 3 cars, plus there is old toilet and maybe a sink in one space.
Can hear everything above you in the unit, especially when they get up at 5am to go on their day trips.

Room Tip: choose an upstairs unit to escape from heavy footsteps, don't choose the pull out bed option.

Our stay in Airlie Beach was incredible with amazing views from our balcony and with a complete room with tv, comfy double bed, mini kitchen with stove/fridge and clean bathroom. Not without friendly service round the clock from Margaret, one of the best hotel managers I have met in years. Thank you for everything. We hope to return soon. We miss cheekalina, the always present and friendly neighbourhood cat... Cheers E and E.

We stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The service was friendly and informative. We had great views of the town and the sea from our balcony. The room was clean and had all the things we needed to make our own meals after buying ingredients from the short stroll into the main street. The return is probably a bit harder for older folk, with steep stairs connecting the main street to this cul-der-sac, followed by a steep driveway. Anyway, it will only take 5 mins, so not really an issue for most. Otherwise great location and coach buses will pick up from here if you're booking a cruise. Bottom line - The tv in the room was small and there were some tacky paintings on the wall, but who cares when you're only 5 mins from where the action is and your room is comfy.

Room Tip: Not too sure, but it looks like some apartment balconies may have their views obstructed by other pa...

We had a one night stay at the Waterview Apartments after a week sailing. The location is great, a short walk to the main strip of Airlie Beach. The check in was quick, easy and the manager Bill was very helpful and friendly. The room a studio, was clean and comfortable. The price was great. For a short stay this apartment was wonderful. The view over the harbour at Airlie from the verandah was beautiful.

Room Tip: We had apartment 5 which is up a set of stairs so not for those with disabilities.
