“Great value in Palm Cove”
Reviewed April 19, 2014 via mobile

We've just departed after 3 nights at the Mantra. It's a modest property (in style not stature) that sits prominently on Williams Esplanade. It doesn't promise to be anything it isn't and I found that really refreshing. Large, modern, well-equipped rooms and very good and consistent service from all those we came in contact with, make it worthy of its 4-star rating.

On booking I advised the property that it was my partner's birthday during our stay. On check-in we were upgraded to a 1 bedroom beachfront apartment (from an ocean view hotel room) and received a small gift of fresh coffee. The apartment was enormous and these really are worth the extra money. The hotel rooms appear to be the second bedroom to the dual key apartments, generally with a side ocean view.

When selecting or requesting a room, ground floor front is where you want to be. The property is 3 storey, without lifts.

The restaurant that sits within the grounds of the property is a Palm Cove institution, and one of the best if not the best on the strip. Best for breakfast, happy hour and tapas. Mind you, dinner was also amazing.

The mantra is a great value place I'd happily stay at again.

This hotel is over priced, and over rated. There is no room service to clean or change the linen unless you stay more then (8) nights. The view was from narrow balcony looking to the side. The bed was like sleeping on a marble slab. We were on the 2nd floor and had to carry our luggage up (4) flights of stairs as t athere was no lift. The only thing that was good was the pool. Will not stay in this hotel again, as it does not compare to any other Mantra hotels we have stayed at in the past.

Room Tip: No tips for this hotel as we would not stay here again

We stayed in the hotel spa room with a garden and pool view. Room was nice and clean, plenty of room. The pool is lovely. The mantra is central to everything on the esplanade, great location. We caught public transit into cairns which was convenient and a great service. Very impressed with overall stay

My 1st stay here with my wife in a hotel spa room. Great location on the esplanade, and a great pool area to relax in. A nice short stroll to nearby eateries - with the beach being right across the road! Rooms are of good size but are let down by needing maintenance, some refreshing and the housekeeping needing improvement. Dusty fittings and fixtures, and after a bit of walking around the room - the soles of our feet were dirty! Crumbs left on the chair. Not a 4-4.5 property.

Undercover parking is good and there are no lifts so you need to bear this in mind if you have lots of baggage or need lift access. The spa bath was useful as was the balcony, with some basic cutlery and crockery provided should you decide to dine in. The rooms are not serviced unless you stay more than 8 days. Our room on the 1st floor was quiet as we were away from the pool or beach front - but the view was pretty ordinary and not much to speak of. Must be one of the cheaper rooms! Little things like the front door that did not close gently and quietly but rather slammed shut due to the door closer being not maintained must have been annoying for others. For the price that we paid, and for the location overall it was OK. I suspect that the rooms that have pool and beach views would have been much more pleasant.

Overall we were a little dissapointed with the poor view, maintenance and housekepping and agreed that we would return to this establishment.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for a view.

So after driving 9 and a half hrs to get here all i wanted to do was have a nice hot spa (which is why i booked this hotel in the first place)instead i ended up having a cold shower as there was no hot water, the girl at reception blatently lied to me and informed me it had been fixed and would be fine in half hr (conveiniently when reception shuts) 4hrs later after dinner still no hot water, had my 3rd cold shower the next morning awesum! Even though the resort was quiet i was shoved next to the restraunt (minus the view) to be woken up at an ungodly hr each morning, The pay per view movies were also not working. Not only was i offered absolutely no reconcilliation for this but was charged top dollar when i needed to extend my stay for an extra night, i was told i would be kept up to date with the progress of the room that i asked to be changed into for my extra night..this also did not happen. im really not happy this time round which sucks because the last time i stayed here exactly 1 yr ago i had an amazing stay which is also why i rebooked , its really gone down hill

This hotel is located in a great location, right across from the beach in Palm Cove (about 25 minutes from Cairns by car). It is walking distance to all the restaurants and shops along the esplande. We stayed in the "hotel room", which was very spacious and had everything we needed. It included a single large bed (probably close to a king size by US standards). The bed was slightly firm, but gave a good night's rest. A refrigerator was included in the room. The bathroom was very nice and included both a shower and a spa tub.

On the downside, I think the rooms could do with a refresh as the furnishings are slightly dated. The carpet was well worn, and the room didn't seem the cleanest. (Note that this hotel does not provide daily cleaning service). Also, there is no elevator (or "lift"), so you have to lug your luggage up three flights of stairs. Our room was located in the front of the hotel, well away from the parking area, which was slightly inconvenient with our luggage (on the plus side, we did have an ocean view).

Although we didn't make use of it, the pool area was very nice and there was more than ample parking.
Overall, for the money we paid, I was very satisfied with my stay. I would recommend it on the location alone.

Room Tip: Rooms nearest to the esplande may have an ocean view, but will be a longish walk with luggage.

The location of the hotel is in a great spot! But sadly thats where it stops.
The room we stayed in was on the 3rd floor, with no lift or staff assistance it can be quite a mission up and down the stairs all day. We even skipped swimming in the pool just on the thought of the stairs after a big day out and being so exhausted.
The rooms rubbish bin had never been cleaned with food stains all over it, so we used our own shopping plastic bags for rubbish.
The furniture seems to be the same since my last visit 7 years ago, the couch was turning black from the filth on it and the cushions just sank to the bottom, very uncomfortable.
We were annoyed at the fact they have ripped out the oven and put a microwave in its place, this stopped us using the kitchen to cook or at least limited us to what we could cook.
The bathroom was nice, maybe a supply of a second set of bath towels to change half way through the stay would be nice too.
They need to place ant traps in as well because ants were EVERYWHERE!
The pool is nice though, parking is a breeze.

General M, Manager at Mantra Amphora, responded to this review, February 16, 2014
Dear Dustin W,

Thank you for your recent feedback and I am sorry that your stay did not fully meet your expectations.

I sincerely apologise and have forwarded your comments to our Executive Housekeeping Manager to review immediately. As a return guest I would have assumed that the lack of elevators at Mantra Amphora has been known prior to arrival, sadly a fact that we are unable to rectify as I am sure you understand.
We always welcome feedback and most importantly the opportunity to receive such comments during a stay which would have enabled us to rectify it for you and discuss same with the team that serviced this room upon your arrival.
At that time we would have also been able to advise you that any additional supplies and amenities (including bin liners) for the room are provided free of charge via reception if needed.
A system that is welcomed by the majority of our guests, but I understand your disappointment if you have not been made aware of this system by your agent.

Again I thank you for your comments and hope that we can welcome you back to Cairns in the near future.

Kind regards,
General Manager
