Kimberley Coastal Camp

Nine of us recently spent 5 nights at KCC, fishing was superb, guides great, food was excellent, overall a great location for a trip like this. Rock art also worthy of mention as is trip in and out to get there. Would go again and may well do that.

I had the opportunity to spend 3 nights at Kimberley Coastal Camp and it wasn't long enough. I have travelled extensively and can honestly say this will be one experience I will never, ever forget. Getting there is a major part of the experience. Flying over the Kimberley in a small aircraft from Broom and landing at Mitchell Plateau airfield was spectacular and then flying from there to the resort by helicopter and landing on the beach gave us a great sense or arrival. The team at KCC are so hospitable and made us feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble and Chef Jordy even baked me fresh gluten free bread each day. Ebony took us on a bush walk and swim in a local billabong, but the highlight was the Aboriginal art in pristine condition and fascinating ancient caves. I've seen Aboriginal art before but nothing as special as this. Jimmy and the team took us fishing and it was like another world. The water is an amazing colour blue and there was so much to see. All types of fish and marine life such as turtles, sea eagles and dolphins. I caught a large GT and several finger mark (golden snapper) within the first few minutes and was hooked. Each evening Jordy cooked the best of the day's catch and the barramundi and chilli mud crab were delicious. Loved the private, rustic style bungalows with the crushed coral floors and comfy bed with beautiful quality linen. Laying in bed and been able to see the stars through the clear mesh wall was wonderful. Love the outdoor showers and toilets built into the rock wall. The saltwater swimming pool was very welcome but the best time of each day was definitely sitting around the campfire enjoying a few drinks and our entree, while chatting with fellow guests about their day. I haven't stopped raving about KCC since I returned home and showing my pictures to everyone.

What an experience KCC is a remote location which definately leaves you thinking what the rest of the world is doing. An experience i will never forget, great hosts who looked after us so well and made us feel so welcome. Every day was as exciting as the one before and left you so looking forward to the next. I will never forget my time at KCC for more than one reason.

KCC is a once in a lifetime experience and we have made it our aim to return every year. We rave to all our family and friends but we will never be able to fully describe the richness of the experience to them. We are mad keen fisher people and had been on a few charters before but with little luck. We wanted a luxury fishing trip not a basic fishing camp and did a lot of research before finally choosing KCC. Even from our first emailed enquiry Ebony made us feel very welcome. We had lots of questions before we got to the camp and Ebony was always happy to answer them. We were really drooling with anticipation a month before we were due to leave. When we arrived we were totally blown away by KCC.

The experience started with a light plane trip from Kununurra to Mitchell Plateau. The light plane gives you a great view of the terrain and we were amazed by all the geological features and remoteness of the area. The pilot flew right over the Mitchell Falls do we got a great view. The helicopter trip was great and gave us our first long awaited view of the camp. We were made to feel very welcome as soon as we arrived and were settled in with a cuppa and Jordan's home made biscuits.
No sooner had we finished lunch, than we were off fishing for the first time. We admired the scenery around Port Warrender as we headed for Crystal Head. Being inexperienced in the art of fishing in the Kimberley we were shown the ropes and within half an hour we had both landed our first queen fish. Things only got better from there. It took a while to get used to Bjorn putting bait on for us and fixing up the lines when we busted them off. Much as we wanted to do lots of fishing we were glad to get back to camp. We headed for the pool and a shower while the boys sorted out the fish and took care of the gear. We relaxed and watched the eagles, sharks and dingo being fed as the sun was setting. By the time Jordan had entrees ready, Jimmy & Bjorn had the fire lit and joined us for a few drinks. Dinner was fabulous.

We got into a routine of fishing in the morning, coming back to camp for lunch and a swim and then fishing in the afternoon until we had to go back to camp. We always looked forward to returning to camp each night so that we could see what Jordan had planned for dinner.
Our fishing highlights were a couple of 80cm + Barra, a huge estuary cod that was a struggle to lift, lots of big queen fish and many other species. Couple of sharks we played with were huge and definitely not coming on the boat. The small creek behind Steep Head where we chased mangrove jacks was just a beautiful spot.

The scenery and fishing were great but what truly made the trip a once in a lifetime experience was the team that looked after us. We were always made to feel very much at home and nothing was too much trouble for them.
We have never experienced such good food. Jordan believes in using local produce from Kununurra and obviously the fish we caught to make simple, but well cooked meals. It is hard to stop yourself from eating too much. Our favourites were the Penang curry, lime chiffon pie, mud crabs and the smoked mackerel wraps. Jordan even did washing for us when the fishing clothes got a bit ripe.

Similarly we have never had such a good time fishing. Jimmy explained all about the gear, how to fish for the various species and what to do when we caught them. By the time we left we were very well trained. He also answered all our questions, of which there were many.
For us the best part of the day was dinner time when all the guests and the staff sat down to dinner together. It felt like one big happy family.

Visiting the rock art was an experience not to be missed. We are not religious people but the rock art filled us with a sense of awe. Our reactions to the rock art were personally profound and we both of felt tingles up and down or spine. It is very provoking to think that someone had done the drawings many thousands of years ago.

For anyone planning to visit KCC, here are our tips:
1. Don't hesitate, make a booking straight away. You will never regret going to KCC.
2. If you're a fishing nut plan to stay for a week. The easterly winds can blow for 2-3 days at a time which restricts the fishing options (we went every day and still found some where sheltered to fish when the wind did blow).
3. Make sure you get the guys to pick the best tides for your visit
4. Visit the rock art
5. Lose weight before you go because the food is fabulous and you will eat too much
6. If staying in June or July don't forget jumpers and jeans because the nights can be cold.
7. Make sure you try all the little pots of sauce and condiments that Jordan makes to accompany the meals because they are little treasures all of their own.
8. Take lots of photos to remind you of your trip – many of ours are framed on our walls to remind us of the great time we had and to keep us thinking about our next visit.

We can't speak highly enough of KCC, the staff and the scenery. The personal and friendly touch by staff made us feel like part of the family. Jimmy and Bjorne were great guides who were as keen to get onto the fish as we were. We had several awesome fishing days both out at sea and up river. Lots of species caught including GT's, fingermark, mackerel, tusk fish, bluenose tuna, mangrove jacks, rock cod, barramundi, several types of sharks, barracuda and lots of mud crabs. The guys were great organizing the tackle, rods and getting the big fish on board. One of the highlights was coming across a hump back whale who entertained us for about half an hour before we were so knackered from catching mackerel we decided to follow him. I was able to get about 20 minutes of footage of him breaching around us about 8 times.Jimmy was able to get some great shots which are on the KKC face book page.
Back at camp Jordy and Julie took great care of us. Jordy cooked up storm every night and prepared great lunches for all days excursions, nothing is too much trouble. Breakfasts are a long leisurely affair with home made bread, local condiments, beautiful fresh fruit, yoghurt and nuts. bacon eggs, bacon beans etc are also available on request. Nothing is too much for the Queen of the Delta.
marketing guru Ebony does a wonderful job at taking care of all the enquiries, bookings, transfers in and out, tours while at KCC and ensuring that the guests have the time of their life. Their knowledge of the land, the tides, the river, the ocean, the Aboriginal Rock art is astounding and the passion that the staff has for the kimberleys and the KCC is a credit to them all.
Hopefully we will be back in April
Thanks again Louise and Brian

I travelled to KCC for work a week ago - I am a travel/fishing/outdoors writer.
I can't recommend KCC highly enough, and no, I'm not paid to write that!
Nowhere else in Australia or the world have I had such an enjoyable travel experience.
I won't spoilt too many of the surprises but if you're a traveller who truly loves the great outdoors, there's nowhere quite like KCC!
Enjoy the jaw-dropping scenery on the way there, savour the super-tasty meals and snacks and sip a drink by the fire as the sun sets behind the cliffs in front of camp... and ask yourself how you ever lived in a big city.
KCC, an adventure unlike anything you've done before.
