“Most enjoyable”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We stayed for a couple of nights in a Gardenview bungalow at The Station (the hub of El Questro). The room was fine, very spacious easily coping with a family of four (there were only two of us). There was a small outdoor patio which overlooked the green lawns and river. Most pleasant having your morning coffee on the terrace while listening to the bird calls. The appointments were good without being outstanding, the bar fridge worked well as did the air-conditioner and the relatively small TV. The bathroom was enormous, but there was only limited hanging and storage space. The room was very clean and smelt fresh although the dark brown towels and bedspreads were a bit drab (but practical I suppose).
The grounds are excellent with much green grass and shady trees. The facilities (station bar, shop and reception) are fine and there is a guest laundry (to my wife’s delight). There is no swimming pool but one is not needed due to the closeness of the river with its deep swimming holes and shallow beaches suitable for kids. The creek is well shaded so sun is not a problem and we enjoyed a couple of swims.
The staff were good. Some, including the Chamberlain Gorge guides, were excellent but a couple were quite off-hand. Still, overall, we received good service. There was a small problem with our booking, not being allocated to the bungalow we requested. However, in the end this did not matter since our room was fine. The staff were very apologetic, we were charged the correct rate and received a complementary bottle of wine. A very satisfactory ending and good customer service, thanks guys.
We arrived on a Tuesday and noticed the bar had a ‘bar food menu’. We decided to eat in the Steakhouse Restaurant that night and sample the bar food the following night. When we arrived at the bar the following night we were told there was no bar food that night This was a bit of a problem since we had not booked in the restaurant and so had to be part of the very last sitting. We looked around the bar and shop for any signs relating to the availability of bar food but there were none! I suggest future travellers check carefully when bar food is available if they are looking for an alternative to the restaurant. This, and the booking mix-up, suggest that administrative procedures are perhaps not as tight as they should be.
The scenery around El Questro is outstanding! There is a wide range of activities and tours. We managed Zebedee springs , Chamberlain Gorge and point 6 in Emma Gorge. The trails are well marked and it was fun to see the little blue squares that mark a track disappearing over large rocks and boulders that seemed impenetrable. Our only disappointment was that we did not have more time and that through lack of planning we missed a tour we really wanted to do (we left it too late to book). We suggest travellers who have limited time plan carefully beforehand since there is so much good stuff to see. Also don’t be too put off by the ‘difficulty’ of some walks. We were very hesitant and thus failed to do some walks that we later found we could have managed. We must come back to cover what we missed!

Spectacular, ancient country few get to see so felt privileged despite it being a relatively expensive experience. We could not access the Kimbeley's without tour operators as not knowledgeable or experienced enough to self-drive. Bungalow was excellent and a relaxing place with the sound of the bubbling stream all day. Tours great and we were impressed by the competent, knowledgeable, professional young tour staff - all Aussies which is important. Meals were good too and once I explained I have a food allergy staff were as accommodating as they could be given what is available to them. A top place to stay.

Room Tip: Only a few rooms to choose from - all excellent.

Our bungalow at the Station at El Questro overlooked a magnificent stand of paper bark trees in the river and the water was a gentle musical accompaniment 24 hours a day. The view was even more stunning when flood lit in the evening. The fit out was warm and rural and towels and toileteries high quality.

Staff are welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was excellent and we really enjoyed the excellent prawns and crab cakes at dinner.

We took ourselves to Zebedee Springs which is picturesqe and great for a warm soak in am palm shades pool. We also walked Emma Gorge and drove to a lookout for sunset.

Staying in an ensuite bungalow was a 'splurge' but worth the cost.

The staff at ELQ are very good at what they do!! They are well trained and all offer great service. We stayed in a riverside bungalow, nice and clean but starting to show plenty of wear and a bit overpriced. Everything is kept clean and serviceable but could do with an overhaul.

Maybe me but the website is confusing and what we expected versus what we experienced did not match.
The drive to the station was okay but the road could do with grading. The checkin was very slow due to others booking day trips. Why can there not be two people on the desk? (Same for check out). Bungalow was small and whilst very clean and providing all you need , it is dated and small.
If you want to eat and are not camping/brought your own food then the only option to eat at night is in the steak restaurant. The meal here was okay. Garlic mash had no garlic, the steamed vegetables had chilli powder added. WHY? and the steaks were not cooked as we requested. We ordered three desserts and asked to share but no means of doing so was provided until we asked.
The service here and overall was first rate. Attentive, smiling and engaging staff.
If you are not an early riser then you may miss out on breakfast 6-9am. The gift shop has coffee and cakes but no light snack food. I had the best coffee at the gift shop. The lady who made it knew her stuff. (In contrast, the coffee at El Questro Emma Gorge was the worst)
Tours are expensive but no doubt great scenery. We did not indulge.
Would we return? Maybe.

Just left El Questro after a beautiful peaceful weekend. Stayed in the unpowered section and had a fire each night. Did some great 4WDriving. The track to Branco's lookout is fantastic. Loved camping by the river and swimming there.

We had heard from other people that El questro was over priced and over rated. We are glad we did not listen to them.
Fantastic Camping ground - Shady and lush green grass
Great Showers and toilets
Fantastic BBQ and live music on the Tuesday night we stayeD
Amazing Gorges and Boat cruise
Heard that the Gibb River road and road to El Questro was rough. It was in sections but overall was pretty good if you let your tires down and most of all slow down and drive to the conditions.
Great place to stay.
