“Loved it after camping in national parks for a week”

We really enjoyed camping at home valley station, although camping on grass made it feel more like a caravan park. What I particularly liked was the bar/restaurant facilities which are really modern and have fantastic atmosphere. The pool is also really nice.
There is also a lovely outdoor area with a bigscreeen TV.

The shower and toilet facilities were excellent.

The campgrounds are quite picturesque, surrounded by a number of boab trees and beautiful scenery.

We recently stayed at Home Valley Station, instead of El Questro (as the latter was full of bicycle riders and support teams doing the Gibb River Road). Our travelling companions recommended Home Valley and it did not disappoint. We were camping, and the facilities are excellent. We enjoyed some great meals in the Dusty Bar and Grill, and also a wonderful afternoon fishing on the Pentecost River with a near full moon rising. When we ended up with major problems with our hired 4WD camper, the staff from the manager Ben, mechanic Gary, front desk Jarred and all the other staff could not do enough for us. Thanks to them (no thanks to the hire company) we managed to continue our trip and see most of the sights we originally intended. Well done to everyone and after visiting El Questro, I would recommend Home Valley for a stay in this part of the Kimberly, for a more personal and friendlier experience.

I have recently had the pleasure of staying at Home Valley Station, what a great place!! It's an entirely different experience set amongst the most spectacular scenery! I stayed in a Glass Castle, top quality accommodation at a very reasonable price! Great for couples, this type of accommodation definitely has a romantic orientation.

Room Tip: The open plan bathroom & toilet in the Grass Castle bungalows may not be so good if sharing with...

I admit I hadn’t set the bar very high in expectations of HV. I thought I knew that the remoteness and climate (closing for the wet) would impact on:

1. staffing (who can you attract to work here? and how can you bring new people up to standard every season);
2. freshness and quality of food;
3. logistics of running activities & upkeep of facilities

Resulting in: expensive, unremarkable accommodation and food (think nearby Emma Gorge) and ‘dude ranch’ type ‘faux’ activities. But, hey, isn’t this the price we pay for choosing to visit such an extraordinary part of the world? Buyer Beware?

Well not necessarily so. HVS was no dude ranch: no chintz, no kitsch – equally, no excuses needed. Home Valley more than exceeded expectations

Our wonderful Grass Castle accommodation couldn’t be faulted. It had the ‘standards’ of ‘luxury’ which, for only a little less money, were nowhere to be seen the previous night when we stayed at Emma Gorge: effective, unobtrusive, air conditioning; wonderful comfortable beds (always my #1 test for places selling ‘luxury accommodation’); fabulous shower & wet room (another litmus test!); hair dryer; coffee & tea making facilities; television with all the stations (which we avoided turning on for 24hours); DVD; plus tasteful décor; all in self-contained accommodation with lovely views of the creek, for bird & croc watching from our private verandah. Utter seclusion while still within easy reach of necessities (food, swimming, reception etc.).

These food & reception necessities, plus wifi access, were centrally located at the ‘Dusty Bar’. A large open construction, with much needed fans, decorated with old windmills and saddles to good effect – a great place to chat to other guests to compare notes and share advice.

I was surprised by earlier comments regarding the food at HVS. We found the menu straightforward – sensibly uncomplicated, but surprising us (considering the logistics) with good fresh ingredients including plenty of salad offerings, quality meat, great fresh melon for breakfast, fresh veggie accompaniments – all treated with respect. Tasty and satisfying. Staff were very accommodating with the various requests – none of this, more of that. I particularly enjoyed the lunch chicken wraps and had a very well cooked steak for dinner. So absolutely no complaints from us and many thanks to chef Simon and his team.

The service was equally good. Perhaps not everything always went to plan but there were only minor hiccups and easily and happily fixed. The wait staff and reception were always helpful and friendly in their execution of the essentials, the housekeeping thorough and unobtrusive. The best thing was always to see how really enthusiastic everyone was – joy is contagious!

The indigenous trainees, integrated into the workings of the operation at all levels, added that extra dimension of reality, and integrity, in a place that is providing great service while making a real effort for the local community.

Although we were only in the area for 4 nights ‘break’ from Melbourne, we hired a 4wd from Kununurra so that we could explore the country en route. This meant that at HVS we could drive further afield and explore the numerous longer walking tracks available. Without a vehicle and being reliant entirely on the tours could prove expensive. Having said that we did go swimming @ Bindoola Falls (with the crocs), take a helicopter flight (spectacular) and go horse riding. All were excellent. The horse riding was almost 3 hours in the saddle (and heat), so not for the faint hearted but thoroughly enjoyable. I suspect decisions are made about all the tours according to who makes up the party. With riding, each of us had to complete a basic information sheet relating to experience, age, weight etc. My husband is a highly experienced rider (me moderately) and unlike a previous reviewer, he and the group were offered the opportunity to enjoy a controlled canter. Again, the nature of the operation demands that it be ‘controlled’, as there were complete beginners on the ride with us. The horses however were excellent, not nose to tail ‘armchairs’, but well suited to the riders’ experience.

Our final night at HV also corresponded with the final night of the Gibb River Road Cycling Challenge, which saw an invasion of about 500 people, cyclists + support teams. This was clearly a huge logistics challenge for the station and it was interesting to watch as an outsider (although I am very relieved we’d experienced 2 previous evenings with the place largely to ourselves). Although we joined the ‘set’ BBQ evening meal, we repaired early to the quiet of our Grass Castle and were not even aware such a large group was nearby.

Finally mention must be made of the manager Ben, passionate about the area and HVS, and who, as the previous reviewer observed, was utterly ‘hands on’. He took time to talk to as many guests as possible, getting involved when there were hitches, taking ‘extras’ on station drives and I later heard even helping poach eggs at breakfast for the hordes of cyclists when they unexpectedly rejected their own ‘self-catering’ in favour of HV’s. Nothing was a bother. From our perspective the results speak for themselves in the quality of service he and his team provides and the experience guests enjoy.

A long review just to report: we loved this place.

We are locals in the Kununurra area and recently spent one night in a Grass Castle at Home Valley Station. It was the perfect getaway after working long, hard hours. Our plan was to camp, but as there was a bit of rain hanging around, we chose to upgrade to the luxury of the Grass Castle. The room itself was perfect, far beyond our expectations after seeing other similarly priced accommodation in the area. We spent the afternoon relaxing on the deck overlooking the river, spotting about 5 freshwater crocs, multiple bird species and enjoying the sounds of nature.
The General Manager Ben took the time to show us around the property, and he seemed to be very hands on, entertaining and communicating with other guests.
I would love to get back there for a longer stay, to really appreciate the Station side of it, as well as do the walks on the property.

Hi all,
We have just recently spent a quick visit at this fabulous spot called "Home Valley Station". The road out from Kununurra was quite rough in places and as we were in a Rav we had to take it quite carefully at times while the other 4 wheel drives screamed past us and left us for dust and covered in dust as well! Just when we thought we were never going to get there we met the Pentecost river which with the sun hitting it looked like we would need a ferry to get across it however thanks to some of the locals who were having a 'quiet one' down the river they assured us that the river was only 1/2 way up the tyre level, so through it we went and yes they were right it was very shallow at this time of year - however it can get very deep also they tell us when there has been a lot of rain.
So we finally made it to Home Valley Station which is not far past the river crossing on the right hand side (probably about 4 kms ).
What a fabulous spot - We stayed in a Grass Castle and thoroughly enjoyed the all inclusive cooked breakky, the children enjoyed horse rides, pony led rides and also Timmy the Shetland Pony was pulling a cart around the track also, you need to book 15 mins per child @ $15 ea
This place has one of the best childrens playgrounds we have seen in a long time, and a fabulous pool to boot.
The Grass Castle was rearranged to fit the 3 children and 2 adults and was not too squishy, beautiful views of the birds, hope you all like noisy Cockatoo's though plenty of them around.
Great spot at the restaurant for a fairly relaxing evening meal with one of the locals singing.
We enjoyed this place our only gripe was that we had to leave when we did due to our own tight schedule, so much to see and do from the Station, worth a visit, the 4 km down to the Cockburn Ranges in the evening to catch the sunset and a big Salty sunning himself before the ranges went red and the sun went down was memorable also.

Room Tip: The Grass Castles are right there overlooking the Bindoola Creek and all its fabulous bird life.

We have just spent 4 nights at HV8 and can thoroughly recommend it. Contrary to other comments posted we thought it was good value. We stayed in a Grass Castle at $195 per night which included a full cooked breakfast. The accommodation was high standard and in a beautiful location overlooking the creek. The very private verandah was glorious. The customer service was excellent, the tours informative and the amenities great. The restaurant food was good, if a little limited in selection and variety, but hey, they are in the middle of nowhere so we were impressed with what they were able to offer.

Room Tip: The Grass Castles are by far and away the best option, unless you are camping or caravaning
