“The perfect retreat”

We are locals in the Kununurra area and recently spent one night in a Grass Castle at Home Valley Station. It was the perfect getaway after working long, hard hours. Our plan was to camp, but as there was a bit of rain hanging around, we chose to upgrade to the luxury of the Grass Castle. The room itself was perfect, far beyond our expectations after seeing other similarly priced accommodation in the area. We spent the afternoon relaxing on the deck overlooking the river, spotting about 5 freshwater crocs, multiple bird species and enjoying the sounds of nature.
The General Manager Ben took the time to show us around the property, and he seemed to be very hands on, entertaining and communicating with other guests.
I would love to get back there for a longer stay, to really appreciate the Station side of it, as well as do the walks on the property.

Hi all,
We have just recently spent a quick visit at this fabulous spot called "Home Valley Station". The road out from Kununurra was quite rough in places and as we were in a Rav we had to take it quite carefully at times while the other 4 wheel drives screamed past us and left us for dust and covered in dust as well! Just when we thought we were never going to get there we met the Pentecost river which with the sun hitting it looked like we would need a ferry to get across it however thanks to some of the locals who were having a 'quiet one' down the river they assured us that the river was only 1/2 way up the tyre level, so through it we went and yes they were right it was very shallow at this time of year - however it can get very deep also they tell us when there has been a lot of rain.
So we finally made it to Home Valley Station which is not far past the river crossing on the right hand side (probably about 4 kms ).
What a fabulous spot - We stayed in a Grass Castle and thoroughly enjoyed the all inclusive cooked breakky, the children enjoyed horse rides, pony led rides and also Timmy the Shetland Pony was pulling a cart around the track also, you need to book 15 mins per child @ $15 ea
This place has one of the best childrens playgrounds we have seen in a long time, and a fabulous pool to boot.
The Grass Castle was rearranged to fit the 3 children and 2 adults and was not too squishy, beautiful views of the birds, hope you all like noisy Cockatoo's though plenty of them around.
Great spot at the restaurant for a fairly relaxing evening meal with one of the locals singing.
We enjoyed this place our only gripe was that we had to leave when we did due to our own tight schedule, so much to see and do from the Station, worth a visit, the 4 km down to the Cockburn Ranges in the evening to catch the sunset and a big Salty sunning himself before the ranges went red and the sun went down was memorable also.

Room Tip: The Grass Castles are right there overlooking the Bindoola Creek and all its fabulous bird life.

We have just spent 4 nights at HV8 and can thoroughly recommend it. Contrary to other comments posted we thought it was good value. We stayed in a Grass Castle at $195 per night which included a full cooked breakfast. The accommodation was high standard and in a beautiful location overlooking the creek. The very private verandah was glorious. The customer service was excellent, the tours informative and the amenities great. The restaurant food was good, if a little limited in selection and variety, but hey, they are in the middle of nowhere so we were impressed with what they were able to offer.

Room Tip: The Grass Castles are by far and away the best option, unless you are camping or caravaning

We stayed two at HVS for two nights in a grass castle. The room was lovely and the location right on the river was peaceful and atmospheric. The room is expensive, but we thought it was worthwhile. It was lovely just to sit in the sun on the verandah and watch the birds and lizards and listen to the sounds of the bush. The location of the station and the surrounding landscape is spectacular. Generally, the atmosphere at HMV is great and the restaurant and pool area are welcoming and the staff friendly.
But there were lots of disappointments also. First, the price of the tours is just exorbitant. There were some that sounded really interesting but at $450 per person they were beyond what was reasonable and we had to skip them.
And yet, for a high-end accommodation option, some things just weren't up to scratch. The food at the restaurant was really sub-par and the menu choices poor. It was potentially the worst restaurant we ate at in the Kimberley region - the barra was dry and covered in an unholy fluoro sauce, the steak was watery and tasteless and I was served the worst plate of pasta that has ever crossed my path in my whole life, including during travels in the developing world. The prices certainly were out of step with the food quality also. The lunch options were pretty poor too. The fact that you can have a sandwich made but have a choice of white sliced bread only and ham or cheese and a few salad vegetables is pretty pathetic. I know that this is a relatively remote location, but they could and should do so much better. If people are paying $350 a night to stay in hotel accommodation, it's possible that they would also want a matching culinary experience.
We also had problems on check-in and check-out with a misplaced booking at check-in and then the application of the standby room rate of $450 per night (instead of the pre-booked $350) on checkout. These were resolved but shouldn't have occurred in the first place. That said, the service staff at the restaurant were very competent and efficient.
So, really, it's hard to give a fair rating. I would say that it's a 5 for location, atmosphere and room but a 3 for everything else.

Room Tip: Grass Castles are well-worth it for the location and atmosphere and some extra privacy.

We were on an Outback Spirit tour, and stayed in the motel style accommodation, which was beyond our expectations, given the remoteness of the area, and that it was on a working cattle station. Due to a design flaw the bathroom floods from the shower, but on another level, the layout possibly turns all the rooms into disabled suites. Heaps of room, airconditioned, and the restaurant was huge open-air style. Our meals were fine, and we went on a short tour of the station with Cassie. Well done!!!

After a long drive on the Gibb River Rd Home Valley was a very welcome respite for a couple of days. We stayed in a Guesthouse room which was very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed all the amenities of the station including the pool and restaurant. The staff were all friendly and the food was good. HV is quite informal and we felt quite comfortable sitting in the huge open-air restaurant area at any time just reading or using the wifi service on our computer. It is only about a 45 minute drive from Emma Gorge and El Questro if you want to visit these. There is also a very good repair workshop there which is useful for tyres repairs etc. One warning about the horse-riding tour. Despite what the advertisement says about this, it was walk only. I am a very experienced rider, the horse was very quiet and I was the only person on the horseriding tour that day but we walked all the way which was a bit tiring if you are not used to walking in a stock saddle for 2 hours. It is quite expensive and experienced riders may well be disappointed as I was. (Although the stockman who took me out was interesting to talk to and very friendly). We also did the Sunset tour which we enjoyed but don't think it was really worth the money. All in all I would highly recommend the accommodation and restaurant but feel that the tours are extremely expensive and not good value.

Okay, it wasn't that bad, but after experiencing our first tire blow out on the Gibb River Road, we were pleased to learn that Home Valley was only 8 km away and had tire-repairs available. Due to the timing, we decided to stay in the exquisitely-located bush camp along the Pentecost River. I couldn't have asked for a more serene setting. We also enjoyed relaxing by the pool and in the restaurant while our car was repaired. And, as I read in a travel guide, these are definitely some of the nicest bush-camping bathrooms/amenities around!
It was really the helpfulness of the mechanic, Terry I believe his name was, that made our time at Home Valley special. He took our late request tire-repair and even checked a few things on our battery the next morning (at no cost, because there was nothing he could do), and overall provided great comfort to a couple of new 4WDers.
I would love to return to Home Valley for a longer stay!
