“Beautiful location but overpriced.”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend in a lakeside spa room. Our first impression was that our room was overpriced, the view was lovely but the room was dated and the spa was filthy. When I spoke to the housekeeper the next day she was very rude and blunt. Other than that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the food was expensive but delicious, I would recommend the duck salad!

We checked in for a long weekend break here hoping for a bit of a bush break with the mod cons. Firstly, for the cost you are expecting a decent 4-4.5 star property. I understand and appreciate you need to pay a bit more when you are in remote locations for the extra cost of delivering goods and services but this was totally out of proportion with the quality. We had a spa room and the spa was empty and the bottom was covered by dead mosquitoes. The fit out was basic motel style and quite dated. The hotel guide has a strict policy on not bringing in any of your own food including snacks with is quite churlish and draconian especially when the restaurant was also terribly over priced for cuisine that could just as easily have come from a bain marie at a truck stop. The activities are NOT included in the steep price. For example for the canoeing was more than $50. The "driving range" looked straight out of the movie Deliverance. This place is definitely one to miss.

We booked this hotel to be as close as possible to Litchfield Park. Hotel is a bit remote and there is not much options to get a brekky or diner bur driving. Standard breakfast is 14 bucks. Accomodation was ok although the cabin would clearly benefit a refresh. There is a small pool along the lake where you can enjoy the sunset. So it is ok for a stop-over but I can't see myself spending a week there in summer.

My husband and I stayed in a lakeside spa room for a weekend in April. We paid $199 for the room which we felt was reasonable although the price did not include breakfast. We had a good weekend away and enjoyed our stay at the resort but this was mainly due to the fact we had no preconceived ideas of how it would be and had read all the previous comments on Trip Advisor so we did not have high expectations to begin with.

So here are the positives and negatives about the resort:-

Positives:-

- Only an hour's drive from Darwin, easy to get there
- Beautiful location, the lake is gorgeous, we went swimming you can also rent canoes which we didn't have time to do but we saw others out on the lake in canoes/boats etc
- We had a King Size Bed which was very comfortable
- Great Shower with very hot water :)
- The swimming pool although smallish is nice right on the edge of the lake and lovely views
- The spa on our balcony was nice, it was only small and runs on lake water so a bit yellow in colour but was fine and a lovely spot to watch the sunset
- We had lunch and dinner in the restaurant, I had Fish and Chips (Barramundi) which was delicious for lunch and we had pasta for dinner which was also nice. There is a separate lunch and dinner menu, the food was basic pub style food but tasty and enough choices to find something you liked.
- We had the continental breakfast ($14 each) which did not have much variety, choice of some cereals, some fruit salad, toast and juice which was fine for us. The cooked breakfasts were around $28pp.
- The resort was definitely not full occupancy so fairly quiet especially at night we hardly heard anything and had a great sleep
- The sky/stars are amazing at night !
- We visited Manton Dam and Adelaide River township before we went back to Darwin, they are both not too far away to combine with your trip

Negatives:-

- The bathroom was not overly clean when we arrived. The toilet looked like it had not been cleaned.
- The room had a funny smell, not sure if it was the AC or just a damp type smell, but for one night we could put up with it.
- Seemed to be quite a few insects in the room
- As you are not allowed to BYO Food/Alcohol you are forced to eat all meals in the restaurant, the prices are not cheap, its basic food however it is a remote location so I understand the prices would need to be higher than in town. If you are aware of this when you book then it won't be such a problem.
- The lady that checked us in made no effort to explain anything about the area and the resort. We asked her later on about if we could go for a walk around the lake and she said there were no tracks. Later on we went for a drive only to find there was a road and some tracks we could have walked on. That was a bit annoying.
- We played Golf which was nice we had the course to ourselves, we paid $20 each to play 9 holes which we did not have a problem with but hardly any of the flags were in the holes which was a little frustrating also the holes were not all marked so it was a little confusing to work out where the next hole was, we just went with trial and error and managed to work it out. We felt it a bit cheeky to charge $40 for such a rustic, poorly maintained course.
- We did not play minigolf but did see the setup and it also looked in poor condition and not maintained at all.
- There are a lot of insects at night (obviously being right on the lake can't do much about this !) so make sure you take insect repellent

Overall we enjoyed our weekend, had we have paid $300/night I don't think we would have enjoyed as much though. The resort is rustic, but comfortable, if you want a relaxing lakeside getaway within an hour of Darwin and don't have too many preconceived ideas or expect 5 star luxury then you will probably enjoy the experience !

Room Tip: Lakeside View Rooms have a lovely view especially the sunset, don't be put off the color of the...

This resort is next to a lake, however, my room doesn't hv a view to overlook that. This resort is very isolated, and it's about 30-45 mins away from the next town.

The TV channels are frequently breaking down, and there's a note in the room telling you that.

I would rather drive back to Darwin to get better meals & better rooms.

Hi,We stayed here over the New Year break after renting a relatives' holiday home.
Staying with us were some Scottish relatives who absolutely loved Lake Bennett as we did!
The water is warm as a bath and the lake is safe to swim in.There are moorings off the homes and you can have small boats on the lake. There were lots of people in small boats and kayaks etc. Its a real family place that is so peaceful and relaxing.
There are no loud boats ot motor sports allowed which guarantees a peaceful tranquil spot.
There's a lot of fish and birds and fishing is allowed-check to see if a licence is required. The resort is close by and also looks to be very nice.
We bought our supplies in town and brought them to the lake as it is a fair way from bigger shopping centres(about 30 minutes away)
We loved the Lake and would love to return in the next 12 months:)

Room Tip: we stayed at a relatives holiday house but the resort also looks nice:)

My Husband and I spent a weekend in this resort, in a spa room. It seems to be very rundown and not what we expected. We were greeted at reception by a very friendly lady who explained all the facltities to us, they were more than adequate. The restaurant served lovely meals without much variety and a little over priced but we made do. The room was clean and the bed comfortable, and the view from our balcony lovely. We only paid $150 as it is the low season, but definitely don't think it is worth $300 in the dry. We had dinner in the restaurant each night and were served by the same waitress who brought out our $60 dollar bottle of Henieski in a ice bucket, not a good idea. The camp kitchen that we tried to use was extremely dirty and had no gas in the gas bbqs. Overrall not a great experience, could be so much better with a little effort and a huge clean up.
