If you're looking for a de-stressing place to lay your head at night, to wake up to a leisurely and graciously served continental breakfast under the cabana, and to walk down the driveway to the beach, this is it! We had a grand old time here. Perfect for groups of 2 - 20 who want to break into rooms of 1 - 3 and spend most of their time on the beach by day and at the local restaurants and dance club(s? -- we stuck to La Bodegua!) by night. The Neptunia cabana is also a chill spot for late night lounging with your group.
As for the beach, when you step onto it from across the Neptunia driveway, walk 5 minutes down to the right and you'll start finding the beachside bar/restaurants to lounge, sunbathe and (if you or your traveling companions are from the American South) smoke cigars at. Walk 10 more minutes down and the crowds disappear and the vistas turn magical. If you're cool enough, a beach dog will adopt you; don't be surprised if he gets a little jealous!
*DO* take the nearby horseback ride -- Suzanne can set you up. It's mythical! For bonus points, don't tell your traveling companions that they'll be arriving at a waterfall -- but do make sure they bring swim suits!.
For the adventure sporters, we were pleasantly surprised that there's a nearby paintball range, although we didn't actually get around to it. (Plus, one of our traveling companions had to protect his baby face.)
Since as you can see the rooms are at ground level, you'll bump into the occasional terrestrial bug, but nothing that a swift sandal kick can't resolve dispositively. We never had any problems with cleanliness.
The classic pitfalls of some Caribbean hotels -- things that go missing from hotel rooms, sick stomachs -- didn't afflict any of the 16 of us at Neptunia.
Recommended!

Room Tip: Ask if there's an upstairs room.

We stayed at Casas del Mar Neptunia for three nights in Feb 2012 and found it to be the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the area, accessing the beach, and also reaching the center of town.

LOCATION: While it's not a beachfront property, you are at the water's edge less than a minute's walk from the front gate. Located just off the main road east of Las Terrenas, it's also just about five minutes walk from the cemetery intersection at the center of town that includes everything you'd need (mini-markets, gift shop, bakery, pharmacy, bus stop, bank, etc.); from what we saw, a lot of the beachfront properties were definitely a much further walk from this area. For beach access, Casas del Mar is closest to Punta/Playa Popy, which is a clean beach area if not a bit windy (it's the best kitesurfing area, which is kind of cool entertainment when you're sitting on the beach). We did walk to Playa Las Ballenas, but it's a bit of trek (30 min walk?) to the other side of Las Terrenas. To reach Playa Bonita or further west (Playa Coson), you definitely need to take a motoconcho or your own transportation - not walkable by any means.

ROOMS: Rooms are spartan but clean and spacious. We had a king size bed that was perfectly comfortable, a mini-fridge, and good bathroom and shower. The in-room safe was also great for storing valuables during time at the beach or during day trips.

PROPERTY: The layout of the property is rather cozy and doesn't provide a lot of privacy, but each room has a little front porch area for sitting or even drying out beach gear, which is nice. Casas del Mar is also a closed-off property and you definitely feel safe in the sense that strangers aren't passing through. A simple breakfast (bread, jam, fresh fruit, good coffee, juice) was served in the main "hut" in the center of the property and was enough to at least get the day started. Wi-fi is free and reliable, which was great. There is no on-site restaurant, but as I said the location is within a five minute walk of at least a half dozen restaurants. For excursions, you need only walk those few minutes into town and find all tour operators for whale watching, Limon waterfall, etc.

OWNER: Suzanne was great! She is on-site and she and her staff were helpful in so many ways. We actually left something valuable in the safe after leaving for Santo Domingo and Suzanne sent it to us within 24 hours. Talk about going above and beyond!

VALUE: For under $50 USD a night this is an incredible bargain for the location and amenities - everything you need and nothing you don't (i.e., no a/c, but a ceiling fan that was great). You could pay 2-3 times as much for a room in a huge beachfront property that also might have a pool (or in-room TV), but spending time at a pool when you have access to such beautiful beaches doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're planning on spending the day watching TV, sitting poolside, or being waited on with drinks at the beach, Casas del Mar is definitely not for you. But for that matter neither is Las Terrenas! It's not a resort area and is much more of a laid-back beach town (that said, it's admittedly friendlier to low-maintenance/adventurous backpackers than families with children). Bottom line - Casas del Mar was the best bang for our buck in terms of comfort and accessibility. We would absolutely stay there on another trip to Las Terrenas!

Room Tip: Seems most rooms face main area and don't offer much privacy; you might ask for a further room i...

Four of us just stayed at the Casas Del Mar for 5 nights in January 2012. We had the room right next to the office and it was very comfortable, a nice quiet oasis. Our room was bright and colorful, had a great big fan overhead which made the temps bearable, no a/c but we just cranked the fan and we were fine. We had one king size bed and a bunk which was perfect for our group and the price is fantastic....The internet connection was fine where we were and the breakfast and coffee were good. There is a night watchman on site every night and we always felt safe. Suzanne was extremely helpful in educating us about the area and accomodating with our needs. There are no phones in the rooms but she allowed us to use our calling cards with the office phone when we were in need. They will even do your laundry on site for a fee. A very relaxed atmosphere and the location is perfect for the beach, just a 2 minute walk to the end of the road and you are on the beach. Or, if you are interested in restaurants, shopping etc..., just a very short walk for both.

Just back from vacation in L.T. second trip there. although we had some rain it was nfl playoffs so watched the games at a great beach bar one love casas del mar is a great little hotel with a truly wonderful owner(Suzanne) and it is her personal touch that makes the place truly special she seems to be everywhere (even on the beach in a stunning string bikini) It is like having a local as your personal guide with tips on restaurants and bars tours etc, to help make your vacation the best possible. The location is perfect(steps from the beach and town),rooms spotless and the staff very friendly I have been many times to the Dominican and would rate the Casa del Mar as 1 of my best hotel experiences ALready planning my next trip Thanks again Suzanne

From the first moment we got there, until the last moment of our departure, this was the place for me. It has everything you need and none of what you don't (read: a.c., t.v., or bar). I stayed in 3 cities in the Dominican and this by far was my favorite. I would definitely recommend this to budget savvy travelers not looking for the all inclusive resort life. My room had: a hot /cold shower, bathroom, ceiling fan, refrigerator, large bed, a closet, & plenty of lighting. It is within walking distance of all the fun/cool things Las Terrenas has to offer and Suzanne the owner is a very gracious host. She is every-ready to recommend popular daily excursions and gives great advice on food and local business'. The free breakfast is a great addition too! You can tell the owners have a real sense of pride in ownership and value their customers as they treat them like family. I will most definitely be staying at Casas del Mar Neptunia the next time I am in Las Terranas.

Casas del Mar is a little gem of a place located just east of the centre of Las Terrenas, and just across the street from the beach. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff are pleasant and helpful. Suzanne can always recommend good places to eat, either close by or a short walk away in the old fisherman's village. English is not widely spoken, so take your Spanish phrase book and hit the beach!

Room Tip: Ask Suzanne to see "La cabinita", built from a genuine Dominican house washed ashore after...

Perfect considering the very affordable price. Big room full of warm details, very homely. Bed not that great, neither shower temperature, too unsteady, but the whole place is adorable and the owner, Suzanne, is super nice and helpful. One block away from the main street, so very silent, still yards away from the beach! A great spot in Las Terrenas, would certainly be back.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We regularly hear that our location is second to none as it is within walking distance to a variety of restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets.

Being new owners of less than 1 year there are still some kinks to work out but it is always welcome to hear how we can make Casas Del Mar Neptunia better for future guests. We plan to get our plumber on the issue of the shower temperature to make it more consistent. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and will do our best to rectify the situation. We are glad you feel you would return to our hotel, if the opportunity arises.

Happy travelling,
Suzanne & Jim
