“Do not rent from the owner of this property. The worst.”

We booked this property back in November 2017 for check-in February 4-7, 2018. On the date on checking when we are 5 minutes from the property we received a whatsapp message from the owner. There is problem with the house, the house is not available. We thought the house got on fire.. Noooo, the own overbooked the damn house. We stranded in a foreign country with nowhere to go, my entire family of 4 plus an elderly woman. Thank Bernard for really ruined my plan. Best was not to see because if that was the case I would send you to the hospital. About TripAdvisor, they only take credit for the good experience, if you are screwed they drop you like hot potato. I will never use them again. I was very disappointed how they handled this situation. This owner stupidity cost us more than we planned and all tripadvisor said. You have to deal with the owner. Granted, the freaking owner is in Europe and in The USA. What a way to do business and in so your lost a customer and anyone I can relate my experience.. Which was F'd up.

“Zero privacy”

My husband and I were looking for a romantic getaway w/o the kiddos so we booked this house due to the private feel- Evans and wife Betty live beside the house and face the house, zero privacy. We ended up asking and paying for them to leave for the night twice. Very awkward during the day.

The property is nice as pictured- Bring TP, shampoo, etc and other essentials.

The privacy is the huge downfall.

“Very Charming house BUT very noisy neighbors”
Reviewed March 28, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

My husband and I stayed here for a week. The house is very charming . The outside area was wonderful. Now the disappointing aspect of our stay- The "staff" onsite were very loud -always screaming on the phone, playing music very loud. We asked then to please be quite as we were trying to read, relax and sleep, but that lasted all of a day! From then on it was very uncomfortable and we felt like we were invading their space. One other issue visit's at night- if someone walks up the street many dogs start barking - security I guess- BUT woke me up every night. Also the motor cycles at night are very loud.

“Terrible Experience-Appalling Response from Owner”
Reviewed January 31, 2016 for a stay in January 2016

people found this review helpful

We were a party of 3 sisters and 3 children ages 2-17 who stayed at this property the week of January 23-30, 2016. Our experience with this property and the landlord Bernard were very bad. We represent a group of experienced travelers who have rented properties in the past (Mexico, Jamaica, Canada and Europe) and as such have reasonable expectations about renting private properties. The bad rating we are giving this place is a first for us! Every other rental experience we have encountered was a positive one.
To start and in the interest of balance I will start with some positive comments about this property:
The pictures listed for this property accurately depict the grounds and home.
The walk to the beach is indeed about 200 meters to the beach.
Ballenas is a pretty stretch of beach, safe and not very busy (at least when we visited). It is cleaner in the stretches farther removed from the centre. The stretch closest to the downtown was littered with piles of garbage at the beginning of the week but cleaned part way through our stay.
The stretch of beach along Calle Sanchez (main road at the end of the beach path) is composed mainly of apartments, private homes and one Hotel (Colibri). These properties seem to be mainly foreign owned (French and Italian). Many had for sale and or rent signs posted so anyone wanting to travel to Las Terrrenas has plenty of options when it comes to finding accommodation.
The house keepers Evens and Betty do the best they can to maintain the property with the poor provisions they have. The exterior of the home is well maintained. The garden is lush with mature vegetation. The pool is indeed large and maintained daily by Evens. Betty does come in daily to clean the home though as indicated in the previous review the hours of housekeeping service are random. During our stay she cleaned the home while we were out during the day which we appreciated. They do indeed live in a windowless shack (garden shed really) facing the living area of the property.
As for the negative aspects:
We experienced about a dozen power outages throughout our stay, starting with the first night. The longest lasted about 3.5 hours. The house did have some citronella candles but only a couple of matches and no flashlight or any other provision for these outages. The one time I spoke to Bernard by phone on our second day he acknowledged that power outages have been common over the past 6 months when Las Terrenas switched from private electric company to the national grid.
Although the house has 2 bathrooms one of the showers is not operational as it only allows for a trickle of water (cold). The toilet in the second bathroom broke down twice during our stay. I advised Bernard of this problem by phone the first time and the second informed Betty. Both times Evens temporarily fixed the problem. We only had one working toilet for most of our stay. When we investigated the problem we discovered that the chain in the toilet tank was completely rusted and required a replacement but since Evens could not replace the chain he resorted to using the remaining links in the chain for a temporary fix. The second fix attempt lasted a single flush.
There are three cats who live on this property. One of them was either sick or in heat during our stay and urinated in one of our open suitcases and also defecated in 2 places inside the house. This was on our second day. When I spoke to Bernard he denied the cats are his though they are fed by Betty and Evens and never leave the property. When I explained the problem and asked him to communicate the situation to Betty and Even (who speak French and only limited Spanish) so they could assist with riding the smell from the house he asked if we had cleaning supplies to assist with the task. He agreed to communicate need with Betty but it was never followed up. Although the house boasts of housekeeping, Betty's only provision for cleaning agents was an almost empty bottle of all purpose cleaner for the whole week.
We ran out of cooking gas on the last night. Bernard had told me that they had a spare tank but when we asked Betty and Even to change it they told us that they out due to the recent large volume of guests. We were without the ability to cook on our last night. We did try to contact Bernard by email (the only communication means we had while travelling) but learned that he had cut off our access to the Wifi. The next morning we did have gas but still no Wifi.
The kitchen is reasonably provisioned with good stove and fridge but limited dishes. Bernard advertises the house as suitable for six but the kitchen only has four large plates and the toaster does not work. These would have been minor inconveniences were it not for the other problems. Mid way through our stay 4 glasses were broken (combination of small children and fumbling in the dark during power outages). Betty advised us of the replacement cost (600 pesos) which we readily paid. I only mention this because when after all of our problems and inconveniences I asked Bernard what about compensation for those such as our ruined suitcase (cat urine smell was impossible to eliminate), inability to prepare food on our last night and his cutting off our Wifi access he blamed us for being unreasonable guests expecting 4 star hotel service and unwilling to provision our stay. I wonder if he meant that we should supply cat litter for his pets! He also stated and I quote "If you wish to write a review I will explain that you are the kind of clients that no landlord wish to have".
We have not responded to this last email and will not be doing so. Our only wish now is to warn other potential renters so they do not encounter the same problems.

Management Response
Feb 4, 2016
So the house, pool, garden, keeper, maid and area are great. Thanks Paula !

But wird and difficult clients !

At the moment, the present clients are very happy and mailed me to say it.
Indeed they know they rent a beautiful house and are not client of an hotel calling reception to complain when something is not as they want.

Some answers to this review :
The chain in toilets was detached and then repaired when keeper was informed.
The gas, the same, I have 3 big spare gas bottles behind the house. So all normal.
The cats are wild and are not mine. So sorry that is only life.
Garbage bags are not provided, no this is not an hotel.

But those clients broke 4 glasses without saying anything neither replacing them and there easily found garbage bags to hide them. Warned by maid, I asked the replacement but clients gave money to the maid which does not replace the glasses. This is not an hotel !
Missing plates are replaced as well.

"his cutting off our Wifi access he blamed us for being unreasonable guests" said those clients.
I agree they are unreasonable guests but sorry how cutting off wifi from France where I live ?!

Wird clients indeed !

“Lovely house - but you are not alone.”
Reviewed January 3, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

The good: lovely, little house. Large pool, excellent outside area, actually better than the photos. Kitchen is large, reasonably well equipped. Bedrooms are a good size with good storage. Showers are roomy and there is plenty of nice, hot water. The walk to the lovely sandy beach - which was virtually empty at Christmas - is quite short, approx. 200m. There is a really good beach bar at the end of the road where we had breakfast most mornings. Their fresh passionfruit juice is great. The walk to the restaurants in the Fisherman's Village takes around 20 minutes - you will want to bring a torch or your phone; it gets quite dark at night and the traffic is quite fast. You can walk on the beach if you wish. Add 10 minutes for the walk to the town centre.
The not so good: We were not informed that Betty and Evens who look after the house live in the grounds. Their little (seemingly windowless) house has its terrace - where they spend most of their time - facing your terrace just next to the pool. This means that they are around 10m from you when you are outside. While they are lovely they have no concept of keeping the noise down with regular shouted phone conversations on the speaker. Neither of them speaks any English at all and our GCSE French and Spanish was not up to the standard where we could communicate. Most of our attempts to ask for things were met with a shrug and it was unclear whether this was because of lack of understanding or interest - I must admit it felt more like the latter.
Betty would freely enter the house even when we were there without asking permission and the time would change day by day. When we contacted Bernard, the owner, he simply asked us to tell them not to do it. When we asked again he phoned them to ask them to stop - we could hear the conversation clearly - and this made the rest of the stay feel quite uncomfortable. It was not a very relaxing holiday.
General comments about Las Terrenas:
The town is mad and good fun: traffic whizzing along, people trading everywhere, very loud and lively. Las Ballenas beach by the house is protected from the waves by a reef approx. 50m out so it is better for smaller children than most of the other beaches in the area. It is sandy with no stones. The reef has a few fish that are worth snorkelling out to see but the reef itself is dead. If you have a car you can go to the absolutely beautiful Playa Bonita beach close by. Houses here are far more upmarket, it feels very exclusive. There is a great beach bar, Ramona, which serves drinks, freshly made juices (the tamarind was brilliant) and meals. It is really lovely. The waves are much larger than in Las Terrenas because there is no reef but if you go to the eastern end the point shelters you. There are a few stones but it is mainly sandy.
We went on a kayaking trip through the mangroves with Flora Tours. The office in town is not always staffed by English speakers (the town is more French than Spanish speaking) but the people taking you on the tour are fantastic. Really good local knowledge and keen to show us the crabs, the different mangrove trees etc. It was very enjoyable.

The maid and the housekeeper are living in a small house in the garden and they are the best insurance for safety and home service and so the best way to spend relaxed vacations in Dom Rep, not the same as in Europe.
