The toll road was beautiful and a lot of fun to drive on. I was on a motorcycle, so did not pay toll, but it was definitely the highlight of my time in semana.

this toll road from santa domingo to las terrenas makes the trip an easy 2 hour drive. we hired a driver and his van which was comfortable and made the journey all the easier, price was $200 each way.

I am torn how to review this road. The toll is extraordinary. The costs is 484 pesos (US$12) for a 15 kilometer road. The toll portion only runs from the EL Catey airport to Coson, although with the existing road it goes on to Las Terrenas further east. The collection booth is at the west end, next to the entrance to the El Catey airport, at the junction with Hwy 5. I think the investors have a 10 year toll window to recoup costs and make a profit.
OK, if you are not incensed about the cost, there are some reasons to take this road. Surprise, there is almost no traffic! This is strictly a tourist road. The views from the road are really fantastic. There is a shoulder, places to pull off for photos, guard rails, etc. - not your typical Dominican road. There is a cave near the west end, on the south side as you are going up the grade from El Catey. The really adventurous could take the steep and rough dirt road down to Playa Jackson about halfway along the new portion. The turnoff is unsigned and leaves through a narrow break in the guardrail - 4x4 required.
No traffic, safe road = take this road at night if you have to be going at that time. Take it ONCE during the day for the experience. Otherwise take the non-toll route from El Catey to Las Terrenas that goes through Sanchez. It is only about 10-15 minutes longer, not a bad road, and does not lack for its own good views.
