Arrived El Portillo Feb 18th. Beautiful resort, rooms and beach. Weather... rainy and windy. From our short time there, we were impressed.
On our second day we were offered an upgrade to Cayo Levantado as the resort was overbooked. After a rather adventurous taxi ride across the peninsula - mostly in the dark, we arrived at the dock for Cayo Levantado. Boat ride is short, about 7 minutes. Cayo Levantado was even more impressive than El Portillo.
Incredible rooms, ridiculously huge bathrooms, very good food.
Animation staff was persistent, but definitely entertaining.
Beach was very nice, good snorkelling right off the beach.
Lots of walking on this resort as it is very spread out. They do provide a shuttle service, just call the desk and they will send one out to you. Also, you can take the water taxi back to Samana (free) just check the schedule and even visit the other Gran Bahia resorts if you wish.
Local market can be an experiece, just be prepared for lots of produce and hanging meat.
Weather was not ideal, but we had a good time anyway. We met some great people who helped make our stay more enjoyable. Our only regret was not being able to spend more time at El Portillo and exploring Las Terrenas.
