As I was booking our next Grand Bahia vacation to Akumal I just realized I didn't give the amazing staff at El Portillo their recognition.
A huge thank you for making our vacation just that much nicer to SAIDA, KEIRA and GEORGIRIO!!
The service here is top notch, the restaurants are great! Our room was spacious and very clean. Our mini bar was always restocked, the housekeeping staff was very friendly and always went out of their way to greet us.
We only ate at the buffet during breakfast but it was really well put together with quite a bit of variety. I have to share that the guys in the Italian Restaurant were very fun, they were constantly joking with us and making sure we were happy with everything. El Pescador was our favorite.
The beach at this resort is beautiful! You can turn left and walk into Las Terranas or turn right and you may just find yourself your own private beach. ;)
The only downside was the spa. We always book massages for the last day, the spa is in need of some updating and the therapists could benefit from some additional training. There were other staff being so loud right outside of our room the therapists had to stop the massage and have them quiet down. Which is no fault of theirs, that falls on the front desk staff.

Room Tip: building 3 is ideal. Building 1 the buffet is right in front of you.

Having stayed at 5 star luxury resorts, we came to El Portillo with limited expectations - only to be pleasantly surprised. The hotel has a beautiful layout, incredible, well-maintained grounds and a stunning beach. The long coral reef is preventing big waves, resulting in always calm, crystal clear water. This is the only hotel in the area, with luxury private properties on both sides of the resort. Definitely worth seeing - we highly recommend walks along the beach. You will love the many shades of turquoise in the ocean.
Rooms are great, clean and spacious.
Food - delicious, with plenty of variety for everyone. All a la carte restaurants were excellent. The buffet has a beautiful outdoor seating area near the ocean.
Staff - friendly, yet very professional and always helpful.
I enjoyed my coffees by the lobby bar - the interior of the hotel is quite spectacular.
If you are looking for a place to party, this might not be it, as most nights the resort gets very quiet after 11 P.M.
A well-run hotel on a picturesque property, definitely worth a visit.

Room Tip: This resort is fairly small. All rooms are within a close proximity to the reception, restaurants an...

The resort is nice, very clean and bright. The staff are great, love Toni, Edison, Josefina, Carlos, Alberto and Ysabel. The beach is beautiful and always clean. The resort is too remote for our tastes. Buffet is too small for the size of the resort and very little variety in food choices from day to day. Loved the Italian restaurant, Portofino. Likely won't return because of remoteness and food.

My husband and I just returned from a fantastic 2 week vacation at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo. The first week we were with 4 other couples we vacation with yearly. Awesome bunch!. My husband and I were so happy to be able to stay another week. We would recommend this resort to everyone. I would love to return to this resort with my family and grandchild. There is no negative comments I can make about the resort or staff. Exceptional! Very clean, food delicious and staff very friendly and helpful. Beach is beautiful and you can walk for miles.
We did an excursion to see Whale Watching and booked through "Terry's Tours " we booked a private tour since there were 10 of us. The guide Raphael was fantastic and spoke very good english. He also took us to a home where they bake coconut bread and a cigar shop where they make the cigars. Great day! Next time I return I will try the Zipline. Several people said it was great.
Samana is lush and a pretty area to see. Weather was awesome. Rained during the night only once throughout our stay.
If you have a drink at the lobby bar during the evening look for Josefina...excellent waitress!
There are vendors on the beach but they don't hassle you. You can get a massage for $25.00 for an hour...well worth it. Go see number 10 she has her table closer to the back of the beach and she doesn't talk while she's massaging.
Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: We upgraded our room to a Junior Suite the second week of our stay. We were in Villa 8. We were very...

Beach 10/10
The beach in the resorts and at the two adjacent bays are absolutely outstanding. We visited other beaches in Samana including Moron, Rincon La Playita and Coson, they are very nice as well but we were very happy with the hotel beach. It has coral reefs at few meters from the shoreline, so the waves do not reach the coast. You can even see the fishes when water is at your knees. Water is completely clean and transparent and turns blue turquoise depending on sunlight and clouds. Snorkeling is very good with many colorful fish species, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, etc. You can take very long walks along the beach, it is very safe with very few people, mostly resort guests walking.

Weather and Landscape 10/10
Lanscape is very pristine with only this hotel at the beach and a few other club houses. Palm trees all over the region with nice hills and bays. We stayed in Feb 2014 had sun every day, some rain early in the morning or late at night but sun came out soon. It was hot but not sofocating. Sea breeze starts after noon and helps enjoy the sun even more.

Food 9/10
5 restaurants and 5 bars, everything you want, great variety and quality. Dalias restaurant is the one you can use every day and is excellent. You can have access to the French (Orchidia) Seafood (Pescador), or Italian restaurant (Portofino) depending on your meal plan. I recommend the Lobster and the lamb with figs and bacon at Pescador. I would only suggest a better decoration7presentation of food platters at Dalias restaurant. Waiters and waitresses were very professional, specially Mr. Martires.

Accommodation and infrastructure 8/10
Rooms are very nice, comfortable and big. Old tv sets should be updated at least to LCD devices, internet should be free and available at all rooms and safety box should be free of charge to meet minimum standards for a hotel like this. When rainy there was an important leak from the roof. The gym is Ok and provides the equipment necessary to continue a basic training.

Entertainment 10/10
The entertainment team was superb. They are the soul of the stay and made us enjoy every moment of the experience. Nadisuzka, Oscar, David, Charlie, Rosa, Luis and Lenny talented, funny and energetic. They are a gem that improves the product substantially.

Prices at Hotel and town
Prices at hotel shops are several times higher than at las Terrenas town. A Panama hat is about US$50-70 and $15-25 in town, a sunscreen is $41 at Hotel and $12 in town. Taxis called from hotel charge $20 to take and bring you back from you downtown while Guagua transportation is 2-3 per person roundtrip.

Staff
All the hotel staff was very professional, kind and efficient. Reception desk personnel were outstanding, especially Mr. Hatuey. We needed a medicine and they quickly managed to have it delivered from the pharmacy in town.

General comments
We rented a car for the day and drove all the way to Santa Barbara, Rincon beach, Limon and Carabelas. We drove carefully and everything went on perfectly well.

I would definitely come back to this hotel and location.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floors and away from entertainment area at night (Pueblo Principe) are recommended.

We just came back from spending a glorious week at this great resort. We have been to Punta Cana 7 times, but just loved Samana better. This hotel had great food, warm and friendly people, and lots of activities. We especially loved the beach, with its coral reefs. You could see the fish without a snorkel, as the water was so clear and beautiful. Would we go back to this hotel--in a heartbeat. We paid a little more for the golden package, which gave us a fantastic room right by the beach, pool and lobby.

Room Tip: Opt for the golden package. You pay a little more, but it is well worth it.

My wife, son and I just returned from a week at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo. It had been many years since I had been to the Dominican and honestly it was not at the top of my list for a vacation destination however I was swayed by the fact that we could book a direct flight from Halifax and by the positive reviews that I read on Trip Advisor. Overall I was very pleased that we did book this trip and my entire family was very pleased as well and I have rated this resort as a 5 which is relative to other properties that I have stayed at in the Caribbean over the past 20 years.

The airport in Samana is small but really impressive … everything was spotless including restrooms and the staff were friendly and spoke very good English (immigration and customs and duty free). We booked out holiday through Air Canada Vacations and upon our arrival, collection of our baggage and immigration clearance we were met by a representative who saw up to an air conditioned bus for a quick 45 minute shuttle to the hotel. When we arrived we were met by hotel staff in the lobby who provided with our keys and we were presented a nice cold drink and welcomed with traditional music and dancers. Fast forward to the week’s stay … our room was a junior suite in building 24 which was at one of the far corners of the resort which was actually nice as it was very quiet and close to the tennis/basketball court and a towel exchange. Our room was clean and plenty big with a balcony and a large bathroom with standup shower and a Jacuzzi tub. There were many high spots of the week at El Portillo … excellent food ~ breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets and the al a carte restaurants (we dined at the gourmet restaurant twice and the fish restaurant once) … the beach was beautiful and snorkeling right on the coral reef in front of the resort was terrific and we saw many different types of fish in the crystal clear water (Tip: bring your own mask and snorkel … athough we took our fins you don’t really need them so I would leave them at home next time). You could also walk the beach (go left) for a good long way and not once did we feel any concern regarding our personal safety. There were enough beach chairs to go around however you should try to get down to the beach by 7-7:30 am if you want to get ones under umbrellas. There are local vendors who walk the beach who sell everything from cigars to artwork to costume jewelry to massages but they are very friendly and not pushy at all. If you were not interested you simply said “no gracias” and they simply smiled and carried on. In no way was this bothersome at all and again never did I feel pressured or intimidated and clearly they respect the foreign guests. Several bars are very close to the beach including a portable one that was set up in the water on several days which made it very easy to grab a drink whenever you wanted it. There was also a bar beside the main pool as well as the other adult pool and the kiddie pool/waterslide. Most days we never saw many young kids at the kids waterpark but if we had young ones we would have loved it there! Bartenders in all bars spoke decent English as well and it was never an issue to get what you wanted and always with a smile. The snack bar on the beach is also very convenient and saves having to go to the main restaurant for lunch … we had lunch most days at the snack bar and it had a very good buffet with something for everyone. The waiters and waitresses were all very polite and helpful although only a few spoke sufficient English to communicate in a meaningful way. But with a few Spanish words and a few English ones we were always able to get our points across with one another. The activities and entertainment were terrific as well and I am not exactly an overly social person but joined in on several of the activities during the day including horseshoes, a spin the wheel game and volleyball. The staff who organized these activities were friendly and created a lot of very positive energy throughout the day sharing a lot of happiness along the way. The evening entertainment at resorts I have found to usually underwhelm although I give this resort top marks … one evening there was a circus night and it was outstanding with a variety of acts including juggling, fire handling, trapeze and other forms of acrobatics which were exceedingly well done. Another night we had a Michael Jackson impersonator who was also very good and another night it was an evening of international dancing by a great dance troupe. I only wish I had stayed up late enough to go to the shows earlier in the week as it wasn’t until later in the week that I realized that it was worth it. In terms of low points from our week there it is really tough to say much negative to be honest. A couple of things though I might touch on. First is the buffet seating … there is the indoor section and the outdoor section. On numerous occasions, including breakfast and dinner, we asked to be seated outside to enjoy the fresh air only to find ourselves next to guests who lit up cigarettes at every occasion. One evening as we were eating our dinner all four guests at the table lit up next to us and we had to request a different table as we were overwhelmed by the cigarette smoke. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any issue with smokers per se but I do take exception to where they are permitted to smoke. I believe that this resort could accommodate smokers in their own section that is sufficiently far away from other guests that they are not disturbed. There was not smoking in the inside area of the buffet or in the al a carte restaurants but a section of the outside seating for the buffet should be designated as non smoking for those guests who do not wish to have smoke blowing in their face while they are dining. The only other comment I could offer in the vein of improving the customer experience is to provide some way of helping guests and staff communicate. I don’t travel to a foreign country and expect, nor should anyone, that the local staff speak fluent English. However if would be very helpful if guests were provided a short list of questions (in Spanish) that could help with the interaction with restaurant staff, cleaning maids, bartenders, etc.. The front desk staff and most of the day/night activities (animation) speak English which was great but in other areas language posed a slight challenge. If I were able to have a card in my room with common questions asked of cleaning maids (more toilet paper, an extra pillow, etc.) would make it easy for guests and staff alike to communicate more effectively. Same goes for restaurant and bar staff area of the resort as well. On the constructive side ... the beds were a little hard and the pillows were pretty flat but we were able to get a couple of extra fluffier pillows (after I learned the Spanish word :))

To close, the highlight of the trip, beyond the wonderful weather, super clean facilities and very good food, drinks and entertainment was without a doubt the staff. Everyone always had a smile and an hola to greet you. There are a couple of folks who I also want to highlight … Amilcar, the guest services manager was exceptional. He spoke Spanish, English, French and German and was working on learning Russian. He was incredibly helpful and I learned a lot about both the resort and the country and its people from Amilcar. I have no doubt that one day he will be a general manager running one of these resort properties in the future. Luis was our waiter in the fish restaurant (where he usually works) and one night at the gourmet restaurant. He was friendly, provided excellent service and again shared with us aspects of his life and culture which I really appreciated. Franklyn at the front desk was also great and in spite of a little hiccup getting our room safe sorted out, he did made sure it got straightened out to our satisfaction. Plutarco (sp?) at the front desk was equally helpful and friendly as was Yajeris who we had as a server a couple of evenings in the buffet restaurant. She hustled all evening and made sure all of the guests at her tables were happy with their experience. Ramona always greeted us with a “hello family” and a smile as big as a moon! Lastly, was Eduardo who was part of the activities staff … he had only been with this property for about a week but you would never have known. We had a very engaging chat with him one evening and like others we met were very open in sharing information about the resort, their country and way of life.

I am sorry for a long review but I wanted to make sure I could share something of value with others. FYI, our Air Canada Vacations in country host, Guy was very knowledgeable on the country and the resort and guided us in terms of excursions and which were worth doing and which were not. My son and I wanted to go deep sea fishing but Guy recommended against it saying that we might be disappointed as the fishing was not great there. I saw a boat return on our second day there and asked the guests how the fishing was and they said it was not worth it and they didn’t catch any fish. I was so thankful that Guy had offered the advice he did and finding a person you can trust when you are in a new place is invaluable!

Oh and last note … we only did one excursion and that was the horseback riding to El Limon Falls. It was well worth it and a beautiful waterfall and we had a refreshing swim and a nice meal after the horse ride. We were with a group that were provided helmets and I would strongly recommend them as the horse path is very rocky and the horses loose their footing at times and it can be a bit jarring. I would not want to fall off a horse onto these rocks without a helmet. And I would not advise that elderly or young riders partake this activity in their own horse as I would be concerned about their ability to stay on the horse.

PS. Take $100 or so in cash in small bills for tips during the week ... while perhaps not necessary this makes a real difference to the folks that work so hard to ensure that we all have a wonderful vacation!

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor near the tennis court ... nice and quiet.
