Reviewed November 27, 2012

Our trip to Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo was over all excellent. We found the accommodations were excellent and service at the resort was great with everyone we met. Three people at the resort stood out for service. Rosanna was an excellent bar tender in the main bar. She was so sweet and attentive every time we were there. Carlos the bartender at the beach was amazing communicating in more languages than you can imagine, always funny, and welcoming. Harrison had a Henna tattoo and souvenir stand. He was a great beach buddy and a wealth of information about the area. All the others working were kind and courteous all the time. There were language barriers but that was all part of the experience. Some glitches occurred like or room phone didn’t work, and our safe needed to be replaced but the villa was wonderful and roomy.
Our daughter was married on the beach as part of the package. It was wonderful the way it was set up and coordinated. Kodos to that crew.
The beach was great and there were plenty of beach chairs along the way. The beach venders were pushy at times but once we got to know them it was fun to talk with them. The Photo crew that randomly takes pictures on the beach were awesome and fun. Availability of purchasing the pics was fun to, we bought a couple. The pools and activities were great fun including the performances at the theater. There were day trips available, we chose a trip to town of Las Terrenas and a boat trip to the National Park and Bacardi Island. Las Terrenas was a great visit, always take a cab and have them wait for you. Our cab waited two hours with no issues at all. The National park trip was all day. Our Tour guide Nano was excellent. He has a passion for sharing the history of the area. He was great about keeping the group together and safe. The Park and Island are a must see.
There were other activates available but spent most of our time on the beach, eating and enjoying the amenities of the resort.
Again overall wonderful week trip.

Room Tip: Always go for the gold blocks 1-5 are the best.

I visited this resort in January for my sister-in-law's destination wedding. There was a group of 8 of us that stayed there and we all had a great time.
The restaurants were pretty good, it was a little disappointing that we could only make a certain amount of reservations when we would have liked to try all of the restaurants. The buffet was very good, and there was a little bit of a variety every day so that was nice.
The rooms were spacious and pretty nice. The housekeeping seemed to forget to replace things everyday though, one day it was towels another it was bottled water, etc...
Unfortunately the day we got there started a whole week of rain, so there was no swimming or entertainment. We spent most of our days that we were on the resort sitting on the covered "patio" just talking as there wasn't much to do. The one sunny day, we did make it out to the beach which was enjoyable. There are a LOT of vendors that come up and try to sell stuff which was somewhat annoying. Try to catch one of the ladies selling massages down the beach though...that was definitely worth it and was probably one of the best (and cheapest) massages I've ever had!
One night we were sleeping and our door came open. Luckily it was latched and stopped when it hit the latch. When my husband looked out the door, a worker was heading down the stairs and didn't respond when called. We asked the customer service and they said they would do something about it but we never really heard back from them. Kind of strange that they never updated us or did anything to make up for the issue.
The wedding that took place was beautiful, and was the highlight of our stay. Due to the rain and wind it had to be moved from the beach to another area, but everything still turned out amazing.
Overall this resort was pretty good, but I really think had it been better weather it would have been much more enjoyable.

Dear Guest,

First of all receive cordial greetings from all the team working at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo.

It is right that at the end of January and the beginning of February we did have torrential rain. It is understandable that the Guest's wait to have a summer destination for vacation and being confronted with days continuously rain and having the expectation of warm and nice summer weather, unfortunately there are so many times human beings cannot stop and predict accurately nature’s phenomena and those days we were affected by strong and continuously rain.

During these days all efforts were being made by our whole animation staff to brighten a party; a wide range of parlour games and lots of other activities were offered to our guests.
We hope to welcome you again to the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo and to thank them in person. Contact us at our email address info.elportillo@bahia-principe.com

My friend found a LivingSocial Escape to Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo in Samana. I read the reviews on TripAdvisor and it sounded like a nice place, so I bought the deal. We stayed there over our Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This was my 1st visit to the Dominican and The Trip Was Great!

The rooms seemed very clean and the food was fresh and always very good at the buffets. The Gourmet restaurant was delicious. While the staff at the Italian restaurant was very friendly and accommodating, I didn’t like much of the food there, except for the filet mignon, which was excellent.

I think there was a misunderstanding when I made the reservation because they had us down for king bed. We needed 2 doubles. I was very tired, picky and maybe a bit obnoxious, but the front desk agent, Sandi, was very patient in finding a room that would satisfy us. He was so nice and accommodating our entire stay.

All of the staff that we encountered was very friendly and courteous, especially Narciso (front desk), Wilson (large buffet), and Juana (spa).

The resort was was a little over a 2 hour drive from the Santo Domingo airport, but not a bad ride. It was interesting to travel through the locals neighborhoods, watching the kids walk home from school.

The beach and resort are both beautiful and well kept. I would love to return soon, but for a much longer visit.

My husband and I spent 16 nights at this resort for our honeymoon, and we would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.

It is quite a remote resort, and takes a while to get to from the airport - about 45 minutes taking a shortcut through the mountains in a tiny minibus, or 90 minutes by coach. The benefit of this is that you really don't feel like you're in a tourist hot spot, enjoying relaxing isolation and a very quiet beach. Instead of being overlooked by the tower blocks of other hotels, all you see is jungle and palm trees. It also means that the hotel kind of sprawls with low-rise villas, rather than being crammed into limited space. We loved it.

The beach is amazing. It's not the white-bleached sand of some others in the area, but it is golden and beautiful, and very quiet and peaceful. You can walk for ages along it without coming to any other resorts or towns, and we really valued the idyllic seclusion. It's kept extremely clean, and the inclusive water sports are brilliant. We snorkeled daily to view the fish that swarm around the reef. Far from hindering our enjoyment, we found that the reef was a surprising bonus - easy to avoid when just swimming, but beautiful for spotting gorgeous tropical fish. There are beach sellers, but they are pleasant and don't pester you once you say you're not interested.

The service was excellent - all staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. We were particularly impressed with the help we received from Carlos, the reception manager. We had a "junior suite club golden" room, and at first the jacuzzi function on the bath did not work. When we reported this to reception in the evening, he sent a man out the next day to try to fix it, and when he was unable to he immediately moved us to an alternative room, and sent a porter to help us with our luggage. The second room was actually even nicer than the first. In addition, partway through our stay we were given a questionnaire about our experience and if they could improve on anything. The following day we were asked to come to see Carlos at reception, and he had arranged to see every guest who had written a suggestion on the form so that he could ask them more about it and personally look into implementing their ideas. (Ours was just that vegetarian food be more clearly labelled at the buffets.) The changes were already being made before we left - they seem to genuinely care about what guests think and want to make their experience as good as possible. The staff clearly take pride in their work.

The rooms were kept impeccably clean and well-stocked. They were spacious and comfortable, and we felt that they were very good value for money. The photos on the hotel's website are very representative. The hotel grounds are beautifully presented and kept immaculately, and are a pleasure to wander through.

The food and drink were very good - lots of choice, including for different dietary requirements, and easily available throughout the day. The quality was great, particularly at the a la carte restaurants (our favourites were the Italian and Gourmet options) - definitely worth checking out! The drinks were delicious too, with many different cocktail options included.

The resort also seemed to be quite child-friendly. There was a kids club that we often saw around during the day, and the children always looked happy and well-provided for. They also have entertainment options spaced around the resort, like table tennis and table football, and evening entertainment like "mini discos" provided especially for children. They had clearly thought about how to make the resort family-appropriate. Despite finding it perfect for a romantic honeymoon, we wouldn't hesitate to go back with our kids when we have a family.

We didn't really check out much of the entertainment provided, but there were options available each evening, as well as activities like water aerobics every day. The pianist in the lobby bar was really the only thing we experienced, and that was good.

Overall, if you want a relaxed Caribbean holiday where you're not one of thousands of tourists, don't hesitate to book. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: If you have a choice of villas and want to be closer to the beach, I recommend asking for a low-numb...

We visited El Portillo for the 3rd time with Air Canada Vacations Oct 7 - 14, 2012. Every year we have gone at the same time. Joel our Air Canada vacation rep was fantastic and as always very helpful. Depending on the size of bus it's an hour to an hr and a half ride to the resort. we enjoy the chance to see some beautiful scenery along the way. The bus ride is worth it since the Gran Bahai is the only resort on the beach. The beach is stunning, warm water and lots of tropical fish to see. We have always upgraded to the Junior suite and enjoy the extra space. Can't say enough about the wonderful staff. Carlos on the front desk, Josephine in the lobby bar, Georgina who helped with our dinner reservations, and Miguel in the main restaurant were all fantastic as were all the staff!! The lobby bar is a fantastic spot for pre and post dinner cocktails. Food is great with lots of selection. We were spoiled with omlettes made to order every morning. My husband and I go to totally relax and be lazy "touristas", if that's what you like to do this is the spot. Already counting down until our next visit!!

Room Tip: We like the Junior suite ground floor. 800 block is halfway from main lobby and disco.

My husband and I went with friends on the week of Saturday November 3rd and when we got there it rained heavily for 3 days straight. Our request were met but our rooms were located at the back of the resort overlooking the tennis courts and beautiful mountains in the near distance but far away from the beach. Next time I will be more specific in room selection. I asked Carlos at the front desk if he could move us closer to the beach and he did not hesitate to assist us and granted our specific request on Monday after the weekend. We were suppose to get a few extra perks for being repeat customers of another G.B.P property, but that didn't happen. I'm sure if I pushed the issue our wishes would have been granted but I didn't really care about a fruit basket or a bottle of rum. I was just happy with the room change and the service that Carlos ( the guest sevice and reception manager ) provided for us. He was a very busy man and always treated travelers with respect and grace. In fact the staff at the front desk were the best we ever encountered. The entire resort staff were fun and always had a smile on their face. The resort itself was beautiful and lively with lots of green plants and unique palm trees everywhere. The food at the buffet was excellent and we did go to 2 al ala carte resturants that were not very impressive, so we just headed back to the buffet later. No biggie and we have done this before at other resorts. The drinks were your typical Dominican drinks and no better than Punta Cana but the premium liquor was very pricey. If you are looking for Baileys, or other liquors, the store up the road had 2 knock off bottles of Baileys that were cheap and the cheapest one was very yummy. The beach was beautiful and when the sun came out and you could enjoy the swimming and snorkelling, it did take 3 days for the water to clear up and we got lots of pics of the fish that others mentioned in previous reviews, but you have to go out after breakfast when the tide is low and the water is calmer. Glad we didn't book the week before because it rained the entire week. We also booked a trip with Herman, our West Jet rep and he was very good and informative and we ended with a tour on a fun cruise with the good rum and the drinks were unlimited and a good time for all. This included visiting the Natioal Park where we saw lots of interesting birds, exploring 2 differnt caves where we saw some bats and cool Pictographs, then had a nice buffet lunch with drinks at a sister resort with snorkelling at the beach. We were a little disapointed with the snorkelling, but I did remember Herman telling us that the snokelling depended on the water conditions that were effected by the weather which was poor on our late afternoon swim. There were some fish around this cool rock formation sticking out of the water but the visibility was poor and not what we were expecting, not Hermans fault and I didn't feel ripped off. Everything else was as promised and a good time. We should have contacted friends of ours before we left who did a snorkelling trip last year and saw lots of fish. They also went in the winter which would have been a better time to go then Hurricane season. Oh well, lesson learned and nothing is ever perfect and when I look at the riches we are surrounded by in our country and compare them to the conditions that these people live in, I am thankful for their wonderful hospitality! The location, resort and staff were amazing and I would go back and reccommend El Portillo it to everyone.

Room Tip: Just request a room close to the beach.

We spent a week (from nov.8 to 15) at the GB el Portillo. It was our first visit to Samana. The vacation was exactly what we expected: nice quiet resort, beautiful beach with lots of palapas and palm trees, welcoming staff. We traveled with Transat vacations, so we had a junior golden suite, very nice and near everything. The transfer from the airport is via a new road, so 45 minutes instead of 90 minutes, with gorgeous scenery.( a pleasant part of our vacation!). The resort is the only one on the beach, there are lots of chairs (great!), and it's pretty quiet: no jet-skis or parasailing (great!). There are some vendors, if you say no they don't hassle you. On the other hand, beware of the Privilege Club guys in the lobby: they want to sell time-sharing and they pester you! The restaurants were better than expected, especially the Oriental. Service is quick and efficient. The house wine is mediocre, as expected in all inclusive resorts. The buffet is not very large, but we found enough variety, except for fruits in the morning. There's free wifi in the lobby, but it's slow and doesn't always work. We did not go to any shows, we are early risers and prefer to spend the day at the beach. Our room was spotless, minibar restocked as needed, even with extra water... A little tip goes a long way! The grounds are very well maintained, even after violent thunderstorms. But water tends to accumulate some places.
We have been to many resorts in the Caribbean, large and small, and this was one of our favorites. We highly recommend it for a quiet and relaxing time, with great service. If you want to party it might not be the best. But it was perfect for us and we will certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Royal Golden suites are larger, and better situated.
