“Restaurant Review for Hotel Atlantis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

There are a few good restaurants in Las Terrenas, and this is one of them. The french cuisine, service, prices, and ocean front views make this a place not to miss, when visiting Las Terrenas. The signs which point the direction to this place are a little hard to see at night, so you should probably scope it out during the day.
The french influence in Las Terrenas is wonderful for those of us who like sauces, desserts, and savory appetizers. I've eaten here three times over the past couple weeks. In my last visit, I had a simple spaghetti bolognaise with the house salad, and for dessert, the sabayon. The pasta was al dente, which is exactly how I like it, and the sauce, so savory, that I soaked up the remaiing sauce with the freshly baked break they had served. And the sabayon with fresh cantalope, watermelon, and custardy sauce was incredibly light, sweet, and refreshing. We split the meal as there was plenty of spaghetti, and salad to make a meal for two. In all, with drinks, we paid less than $35. In most of the other places, with similar food listings in Las Terrenas, we were paying as much as $60 for the same thing.

Room Tip: They didn't have the restaurant listed separately, so I rated it here under the hotel name.

My husband and I chose Hotel Atlantis for our "first" honeymoon (we call it first just because we both agreed to take a more extended honeymoon when we have more time and to a place neither of us has gone before - but this sure was one!). We had both been to Las Terrenas before but knowing it would be super busy and loud during the Easter break we wanted to stay somewhere quieter, away from the crowds, where we could take walks, lots of pictures, have some good food and just relax and catch up on some needed sleep after almost a week of wedding festivities. To find the hotel, follow signs to Playa Bonita and ask around - we were driving there around 8:30 and it was quite dark, all the people and guards were very nice. We stayed at the "Quito" room, top floor and ocean view disrupted by some trees but ocean view nonetheless. Our room was kept clean and we got fresh towels every day. My husband is now obsessed with the juniper shampoo they put in the rooms. The hotel grounds are beautifully kept and it's right on the beach - you walk out and you're right there. The staff also works very hard to keep the beach clean. There were sufficient beach chairs for everyone around - I spent a long time in those chairs reading and napping. Playa Bonita is a rather long stretch of very consciously developed beach - no giant resorts here. Very good opportunities for photos - we got great sunset ones. Breakfast is included in the hotel rates and even when it might not seem abundant to some people, it was more than enough for my husband and me. The bread is delicious. We had lunch once and dinner twice at the restaurant - and understood why it's not to be missed. They have a great wine selection - as any decent French establishment should - and the food is plentiful, delicious and above all, FRESH. I have a rule of always eating fish of the day when I go the Samana Peninsula - and here I really understood why I do so. The tuna with peppercorn sauce I had was possibly some of the freshest tuna I have ever had, paired with perfect sides. I could eat that squash mash for a looooong time. Ah so delicious! It might be pricier than other places but you get your money's worth - in my opinion.
One thing: this hotel and the surrounding areas are really not for people looking to party. This is a place to relax and enjoy your surroundings, not to go crazy. If you're looking to party, stay in Las Terrenas. Please.
And yes, the dogs are ADORABLE.
I'd go back there any day of the week. It was so lovely!

we already had two nights in las terrenas in some italian hotel .. that was not directly on the beach only more or less ok .. then we drove to the playa bonita and by some recommondation of a friend we found the atlantis and stayed two nites in the end. It was a wonderful time beach walks, sun, palms, french food (take the american breackfast with panecakes > instead you will get the real french "creps" which are anyhow 1.000.000 times better anyway - i eat like 10). The price is a bit high for what you get but still acceptable in a way (100$ including breakfast for a room with no ocean view). Everybody is very helpful and very polite, even though they are french the speak also english, you can also pay with credit card. The hotel is directly on the beach which has a plam tree every woman dreams of > they all lay on it for a foto. Every time we where using the beach chairs we were guided by our "personal whatch dog" = there are some beautiful dogs who whatch out for the property and the guests as it seems. All in all very good choice considering the surrounding offers.

Fantastic French food for a special occassion but prices really steep (i.e., count on $100 per person with wine). Well worth it for a birthday dinner while staying nearby.

We stayed there for my father in laws 70th birthday and made and excellent choice.
We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet well run small hotel, if the whole experience might be a bit French at times (when we arrived there was a note to call the owner for check-in :O)
As other reviewers pointed out, the location is a bit off track, but well worth the trip giving the beach at Playa Bonita and its surroundings once you are there (the road was getting paved when we arrived btw).
While the restaurant was closed in the evening (we stayed in low season) there are plenty of other options nearby.

The only criticism I may have is that while good value for money, the extra charge for A/C rooms doesn't make a lot of sense to me, you either have it throughout and clients can use it or not.

llWe thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet well run small hotel. "This is a relaxed and quiet place for uncomplicated people." - sums it up really. For us been able to open our bedroom windows and hear the sound of the sea is real luxury.

" It is not an easy drive to get there" - so what.the hotel is not reponsible for the road system.

" There was no phone, no radio, no TV, no hair dryer" - LOL if you want this better off staying at home.

My only negatives would be The Granda room still had no bathroom curtain - important as the room is quite public.
For a such a tastefully designed hotel why do you place the cheapest possible Haitian/Dominican art on the walls - better off with nothing.

I spent a week in January in hotel Atlantis and had a great time!
I recommend the small plane trip to get there: its both fun and fast! Dont be scared by the last kilometer of bad road to reach Playa bonita; at least it makes it a bit more "secret" and much more quiet thant any of Las Terrannas beaches. Moto conchos or cabs will take you easily almost anywhere for a few hundred pesos. Here, you will only hear the sound of waves!

The hotel team helped us organizing everything very smoothly, kindly and professionally. The hotel also serves as local French consulate (apart from the mixed delicious food) which can happen to be useful in case of problems for French citizens. Our room (Granada) was large, well decorated, very clean, fan was enough at that time of the year. Bathroom very clean and with nice complementary set of soaps etc...

This is not a luyxury hotel, this is not a "all inclusive" hotel. If you re looking for that, go to Punta Cana.
This is a smal charm hotel, there are no TV, its on the sea, 3 minutes away from Playa Rincon, one of the most beautiful ever. Breakfast and home baked bread are excellent. The rest of the restaurant menu is delicious, Dominican and French fusion. Its the perfect retreat for those looking to see unspoilt Samana peninsula.

The nice "plus" : wi-fi on the beach !
