Julie's Getaways
Reviewed December 31, 2007

Julie's Getaway is an overpriced camping experience. While the setting is beautiful, and the snorkeling and reef are nice, the facilities are sorely lacking. Gabby and Luis, the caretakers, try very hard to make the stay enjoyable. However, sleeping was difficult after my boys found huge black scorpions in their beds. Bugs flew around our heads constantly all night long. The kitchen was infested with roaches and other bugs. It was like being outside, but we paid a pretty penny for it!

I would like to let everyone know about the recent changes and updates to Julie's Getaway. I was there in January of 2010 and here's what is new: Soliman Bay is now a guard gated community * there is a fantastic restaurant 100 yards away that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner * at the property over 200 palms were planted, a gas grill was added, the kitchen was renovated and a new stove was added, the oceanfront tree house was rebuilt, the outsides of all palapas were varnished, all interiors were painted, the baths were re-stuccoed and there is new plumbing, all roofs were re-thatched and netted, there are regular bug sprays and there are new exterior screen doors.
We have a new caretaker who was in the motel industry in Alkumal for 10 years and who speaks 5 languages. Please consider re-visiting our property!

No pictures of the inside of the place on the websites it advertises on anywhere. Now we know why. Julie's Getaways on Soliman Bay, Mexico, are extremely run-down. Termite infested (daily piles of sawdust from the palapa roofs coming down on tables and beds); two-inch gaps under the doors; screens on windows stapled on with 1/4" gaps; spiders, scorpions, lizards and ants galore; sinks pitted with salt residue and coming apart from the wood they are set in; gaps even at the corners of the walls. Toilets had like plaster stains on them; shower is just PVC on the inside of a stall with wood walls.
Very poorly constructed enclosures. The caretakers did keep the place as clean as they could, swept up the bugs and pieces of palapa roof that fell every day off the floors. One linen change for the entire week.
Do not expect anything more from this place than a glorified camping experience.
The beach was great though and the pool was also very nice -- we just dreaded going inside the buildings at all for any reason.
