Owner description: Australia's premier rail trail offers more than 100km of scenic, sealed, off-road bike trail in North East Victoria. Starting in Wangaratta, the rail trail connects culinary villages including Milawa, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Bright and Myrtleford. Discover the diverse landscape of the High Country region - from natural bushland to open farmland, fertile valleys and some of Australia's most spectacular mountain ranges. The rail trail meanders alongside clear rivers, vineyards, hops, orchards and groves, with plentiful food, wine and craft beer experiences dotted along the way.

We travelled by train to Wangaratta then cycled about 4k to North Cedars Holiday Park which backs onto the Rail Trail for our first night. The trail from Wangaratta to Bright is about 83k of fairly easy riding on a mountain bike. There is a little climb at Taylors Gap. The surface was sealed all the way. Lovely country side to ride in with lots of cattle to watch you as you go past. Good amenities along the way though if not detouring take plenty of water if hot. Stayed at Oriental Cycle Hotel in Bright and rode back again the next day. Have previously ridden from Everton to Beechworth a nice steady climb to Beechworth, but a great ride down.

I walk a fair bit. This trail from Wangaratta is a nice easy walk or ride. I like the quietness of the track and the fact that every now and then some one rides past and says G'Day

We left our car at wangaratta and cycled off toward beechworth, 4km in I wondered how we would ever make it. With such a great track through the most scenic country side you were mesmerized. The climbe from everton to beechworth was quite a challenge but such an achievement to complete and to be welcomed by such a lovely town was well worth it. Then on to myrtleford and bright the scenery was amazingly beautiful. Fantastic ride highly recommended. Bus a bike was a great find to get us back to beechworth up the hill on our last days.

The entire length of the trail is about 90 kilometres and is a fairly easy ride. I have done it twice now. The first time took all day as there were riders of varying degrees of fitness and ability. The track is good but is not ideal for road bikes as it can be a bit bumpy and also a bit hairy if you start to go too fast. Ideally you should do the trip on a mountain bike. There are plenty of rest stops available along the way and opportunities to buy food and drinks. You don't have to do the entire 90 k's and you could start anywhere along the trail. The second time I did we actually started from Beechworth and went through to Harrietville which is about 25 k's past Bright where the trail ends so there are plenty of variations available. It is a great dad/kids bonding thing to do! The scenery, especially in autumn is amazing.

The Murray to Mountains rail trail is a delightful track from Wangaratta to Bright, all of it off road, apart from the road crossings.

I rode the rail trail with my father twice now, this time was in Autumn, and the colours of the leaves just simply amazing. The days were fresh at this time of the year, but once you get going on the bike, the freshness just melds into the background.

We were situated in Myrtleford, which was virtually in the middle of the trail, this enabled us to do day trips in each direction. The options include riding to Beechworth via Everton meandering past vineyards and paddocks (the downhill section from Beechworth is truly awesome, including some off road options) ; another ride is out to Lake Buffalo (along a quiet country road), and a favourite of many is through to Bright riding past paddocks of cattle, old tobacco huts and alongside the river.

The rail trail itself is well maintained, and has regular stops along the way including well maintained and serviced amenity blocks.

We loved it, and this ride has become a regular visiting spot! There are caravan parks, pub stays and B&B's to stay in...or camping:)
