Lots of history and atmosphere, easy to imagine the lives of the many people who worked and lived there years ago.

Only worth going to see this if you have visited the museum. I would say if it is raining then don't bother as it's all outside. If you are off Chinese descent then obviously it is a MUST visit. I would say visit it if you time, but don't worry too much if you miss it. You won't be missing much. If it helps you decide......it is free! ;)

Took a short leisurely stroll around the settlement and found it very interesting. Explore the restored huts, shops and accompanying info boards and it'll give you some great background on how early Chinese settlers lived in New Zealand. Unfortunately also a sandfly settlement :-)

When in Arrowtown it is worth walking down behind the main street to the car park and bus stops and wander on to this archeological site. There is little left to see except the impression of the settlement; and there is much to ponder over the history of the local Chinese gold miners and how they were treated. There is more of that story in the nearby main museum.

Well preserved houses of the Chinese miners with lots of informative storyboards scattered throughout the site, which really gave us a feel for how the miners lived. Entry is free and we wandered around at our leisure for about half an hour, there's no shop here to spoil the quiet atmosphere, so we got the chance to soak up the history. We walked a little way down the creek which was very pretty, you can also pan for gold in the creek.
