“Millbrook your slipping”
Reviewed October 13, 2011

Stayed in August and accommodation was fabulous. Spacious with everything you need in the room for an enjoyable stay. What marred the stay was the service (or lack of) at the clubhouse for morning breakfast. The food was lacking (were not restocking when food ran low or ran out), after asking about the poor delivery we were left with no answers or apology. Sorry Millbrook but your slipping in service!! We got married at Millbrook in 1995 so were looking forward to the weekend stay, apart from the lack of breakfast, the gym spa area was fabulous with lots of classes and a warm pool. This was our fourth stay at the resort and maybe they were just having a bad day but did leave feeling let down.

Thank you for the feedback on your recent stay at Millbrook. We are proud to have guests, like yourselves, returning to us year after year and look forward to making each stay as good, if not better, than the last.

We are committed to providing our guests with an exceptionally high level of service across all areas of the resort. It’s nice to see that for the most part, we matched the high standards you have previously experienced at Millbrook and I am sure expected to receive again during your recent visit.

However, the level of service you encountered at breakfast didn’t meet these expectations and we thank you for your feedback on this area of the resort. Our food and beverage manager will follow up on the points you have raised to ensure our high standards are consistently met and exceeded in the future.

We do hope that you will return to Millbrook Resort again soon and allow us to once again make your visit a special one.
Kind Regards

Everything here is impeccable! The rooms, the service, the food, absolutely EVERYTHING! The free transport to/fro Arrowtown and Queenstown was an important consideration in our decision to stay at Millbrook. One of the best spas in the world!

Room Tip: There are only two floors -- but no elevator. You can request the view of the Remarkables mountain...

I truly do not know where to begin. I am 30 years old and because of this experience, I have absolutely positively decided where I am going to retire. Millbrook is fantastic and Arrowtown in just magical.

Starting with the resort: What a beautiful and charming place. I had originally booked for 4 nights but fell so in love with the resort that on the 3rd night, I booked another 4 nights. The unit I stayed in had a sitting room, complete with remote controlled fireplace, a huge bedroom and a huge bathroom. It felt so nice to cozy up next to the fire place after coming back from a long day of hiking and enjoying the indescribably beautiful offerings of New Zealand.

Walking from the reception/clubhouse/restaurants to the unit, you walk on wooden footpaths that stretch over running water. It's just so sweet. The clubhouse is the perfect place to have lunch or a little snack. You can cozy up next to the amazing fireplace and take a little breather. Their muffins are absolutely to die for.

The resort has a number of restaurants, all of which are wonderful. The service is impeccable especially for a place which seems to have a lot of seasonal workers. Everyone was kind and eager to help. For example, I ate at one of the restaurants and was really in the mood for soup. I didn't like the soup they had on their menu so the waitress offered me soup that was being served at another restaurant on the resort. That is the definition of service.

There is also so much to do at this resort. Of course there is golf, but you can also rent bikes. I did this on two days and it was just so much fun and just beautiful to explore. This resort literally has 360 degree views. Every direction you turn, there is just magical beauty to get lost in. There is also, of course, the spa, which again, was charming and sweet in its set up and decor and just great service.

Arrowtown is also a treat in and of itself. A tiny tiny town with such charm. Make sure to take in a movie if you can. I think the total number of seats was like 30!

I can NOT wait to go back to Millbook, but this time with my husband. Wouldn't mind taking a look at some of their properties this time...I can't wait to retire!

Millbrook is a let down in two respects: the accommodation and the service. Which is pretty much what you want a place like Millbrook to get right. First, the accommodation.. Here's something you probably want to know: if you book a unit you are actually not staying with Millbrook. You are in fact renting someone else's little holiday getaway and Millbrook acts as an agent. So be prepared to be surrounded by the personal photos of the owners and their families and mates. And the signs. Here's a couple of my favourites "don't use the china it is our personal china". Or the giant "don't remove the hangers". I am paying 500 plus/night to stay in your holiday cottage, do you really think I am going to nick your plastic coat hangers ? And what if I did ? They cost 20 cents each to replace. And then there's all the locked cupboards you encounter when lookng for something. Clearly, you are trespassing, and the owners will not let you forget. Apart from the unexpected sharing of someone else's private space, the arrangement has practical issues. Our kids broke something-nothing major- but it became oh so complicated because of "the owners". Which brings me to the second point, the service. Like many others have testified here, it is not that it is bad, just completely clueless. Albeit friendly, staff have no idea what their job is or how to perform it. Every request, no matter how simple, is met with what our family dubbed "the Millbrook sighs" (you better get used to it), followed by "I don't know" and then "extra charge". I could write a very long list of things that weren't delivered, meals thatt were wrong, the concierge not knowing anything at all about local skiing (in a ski resort), or dining (throwing you some brochures). It is just complete and utter cluelessness. Fawlty Towers came to mind more than once. But that was a low cost British seaside family hotel, not a place that markets itself as a world leading resort.

So much to do here - minutes from old gold-mining town Arrowtown, not far from stunning Queenstown, surrounded by vineyards and 30 minutes from Coronet Peak Skifield. Not to mention the three 9-hole golf courses, spa and on-site restaurants. Definitely book to have a meal at the Millhouse - the food is local and delicious.
