There is so much history in this town whether it be the Maori contributions or the gold rush days and the museum gives a great variety of exhibits to illustrate the past whether it be the economics, culture or personal lives.

This is a must see attraction when in the Southland of the Southern Island of New Zealand. What a wonderful museum that tracks the history of the region from Maori times through the gold rush era through to modern times. An astounding collection of displays and memorabilia and in some cases even re-creation of the actual scenes.

The old school room was in action with a school ma'am strutting her stuff - cane in hand - and bellowing instructions. If this was not my first grade teacher then she must be her grand daughter! Well done, especially to the visiting school children on a museum excursion who filled the roles of the somewhat delinquent / inattentive school pupils.

This is a must see - do not miss it.

My partner and I stopped in at the museum during our day trip to Arrowtown and were completely blown away by the outstanding exhibits contained within. It is very clear to see that so much pride and care has gone into the creation of this small museum and this is reflected by the almost personal nature of the displays. Really interesting experience and a real must if you ever stop by Arrowtown!

This museum packs a great deal into a small space. The museum exhibits are really well done and there is a lot to see. The exhibit in the art gallery when I was there was wonderful. If you have time, get the key to the old jail (gaol) and go. It's in good shape and is really interesting. Try to get better directions than I did, though as it took me a while to find it : )!

We visited Arrowtown on a rainy day so checked out this museum. What a treat! There is lots of local history here. there were several children visiting at the time and they were finding things to interest them as well. Having it in an old bank building just added to the atmosphere.
