Misty Lodge is good value accommodation for singles, like myself, or groups in dormitory style rooms of one to five, up to 20 people. It's located high up on a tea estate on the edge of the central hills and commands spectacular views which extend to the south coast on clear days. The sound of gushing waterfalls in the adjacent valley fill the air. The weather changes quickly and dramatically here, as expected with the altitude, being on a hill spur below the popular Hortons Plains.
From Ohiya railway station the tea estate is a three wheeler ride, then walk to the door, so be prepared for the walk.
The area is ideal for walkers with footpaths to higher ridges and lower valleys with river bathing spots, wherever you go there are always changing views to surprise. The tea estate is a fascinating authentic Sri Lankan existence with endless smiling faces to engage with.
Misty Lodge is equally a place to relax away from the hustle of the world. There are many birds to watch the birds or chat with the children on their way home from school.
I enjoyed the company of Deen and Manoj who are friendly and welcoming, and always open to challenge at karom. The authentic Sri Lanka food is of a very high standard; even the tasty Roti bread was freshly baked on the griddle for breakfast. Have a go at making your own as I did - it looks easy but requires a bit of patience.
