Located a few of kilometers off the Ohiya railway station Hill Safari Eco Lodge sits amidst many misty hills. The views from around the hotel are absolutely stunning and if the sky is clear you could even see up to the Dondra point on the south coast. But unless you have a 4WD or a vehicle with good clearance you cannot get right to entrance of the hotel. In this case you will have to park your vehicle on top of the hill and walk down about 750m. If you are not willing to walk, the hotel does send a van to pick you and your luggage up which is a good thing. The lodge had about 6 -7 rooms and they were differentiated based on if it was inside or outside. The outside rooms are definitely better and spacious and gives you a great view. But please try to avoid the rooms inside as they did not smell too good and just had one barely working lock to close the main door which I thought was not safe. The garden had a lot of potential if it was maintained but we all felt that it was neglected to a large extent. The hotel organized a BBQ and dinner for us but there was nothing exceptional with the dishes (as we ordered pasta). I think they will do a better job if you just order some fried rice or noodles. But the breakfast was quite good as we had the Sri Lankan menu.

There are many activities you can do at this place such as hiking the nearby mountains which gives an amazing view and you could also do some bird watching. They also have a fuzboll table and a few board games. But please remember there is hardly any mobile signals here and the hotel does not offer any Wifi facilities stating that even they do not have sufficient signal strength.

So overall if the management can work on maintaining the interior rooms better and maintain the surroundings of the hotel it is definitely a recommendable hotel.

Room tip: There is one room on the first floor...has the best view

Nice hotel very nearby horton's plains and ideally for visiting world's end early in the morning; one big drawback : the last road to get there (our driver managed but few will be able to deliver). It is a steep rocky 1km private road to get there.
Food is excellent and staff is very nice and all of them speak good english.
No wifi but not necessary and no cards (bring your cash along!)

So want to love this place - the location is amazing, with miles and miles of walking through tea plantations to Horton Plains and waterfalls. Deserves 3 nights to really experience. It's so far off the beaten track.
The 'superior' rooms are beautiful, but a little impractical (drafty and chilly at night). We got unlucky with high winds and loose roofing - resulting in a sleepless night (subsequently fixed - they did all they could in the circumstances)
The basic rooms (we had to move mid-stay) are much more practical (warm, very comfortable) if a little dark. In hindsight, I'd probably have just stayed in these.
Maps and advice on walks was great.
Food was tasty - but very repetitive for 3 nights (we had almost the same curry set for all 3 nights).
But then all made up for by the location, and good hospitality.
Oh, and if you're going to walk to the waterfalls and back, take a packed lunch - the promised restaurant wasn't open, not great 15km into a 30km walk!

We made d bookibg about two days before d holiday and a room was luckily available. However, based on reviews we questioned several times from d hotel (sevral calls as well) whether we can come in our car. They said yes it is possible to come n d car upto their carpark and from their, they will arrange their vehicle. I even told the hotel whaty car model is and still they said it is fine to come upto their car parking area.

However, need to warn you bhig time dat u cannot travel in a cra,but u need 4WD or hv to take a trishaw to even go to d car park. Our car was in great danger n knocked d bottom at several places.

The road was so narrow dat we cudnt turn n come and it was a horror ride. We went so close to d car park n then we turned n came luckily. We even walked to d car park to see, I would never park my vehicle there. This stretch maybe ab 3km I guess.

The lodge might be a good place but the hotel could have warned us about this road and they nva did. We feel they just wanted the sale. We request you not to do like dat cz u r putting ppl n danger.

Aldo this place is about 26km from haputale town which takes about an hour to reach the place.

We found Hill safari doing a random google search, but we were not disappointed even from the booking process, eomal sent us a very detailed email on how to get there without a hassle and with that and help of google maps we easily found the place on our own. We got the luxury rooms with the balcony and bottom views, they were great, super clean and well worth the money. The hospitality at the lodge was nothing short of fantastic, we were treated so well and they gave us a lot of good information on what time to visit horton plains and they even had our breakfast packed and ready to go for our early morning trek! We would highly recommend this place to anyone!

if there was one con to the place it was the road that led to it, if you are driving anything other than a 4x4 its not recommended to come down that road, the people at the lodge will pick you up from the top. If the management of the lodge takes some initiative to build the road it would be nothing short of a perfect destination.

we will definitely return again!

Room tip: Go for the rooms with the balcony ( new wing)
