Threeways Roadhouse
Reviewed July 18, 2013

There's not another town within 400km of Tennant Creek and Threeways does not pretend to be a resort. We were made to feel welcome and the site was better than a lot of other roadhouses we have stayed at with some grass and trees as opposed to gravel. The amenities were ordinary but not flash. We had a hamburger at the restaurant and it was very good. Finally we appreciated the hospitality of the manager. State of Origin was on that night and he put on free prawns, finger food and chips for the 30 odd tourists who watched it in the on TV in the bar. Nice touch, a lot of other places would not have bothered.

Room Tip: Relax-enjoy the outback experience.

There are seven of us in the family. We stayed in two rooms. The rooms were ok but grotty. You had to unplug the fridge to use the bathroom door in one of them. Walls were paper thin so you could keep up on your neighbours gossip no problems at all. Initially they gave me the key to someone else's room which could have been interesting if they had been in there, with strangers barging in. Once I got another room I was assured we could hand back the keys at six and get our twenty dollar key deposit. We waited until six thirty still no one. I rang the phone three times and listened to it ring out, eventually we left without our deposit, having to lock the keys in the room. The food was expensive and horrible, take away fish and chips for one $19 greasy and horrid. The fuel was insanely priced and the service non existant, mumbling seemed the order of the day.

This is a true outback styled caravan park. Not much more than a large patch of dirt behind the road house. That said, it provided us with somewhere to park the van for a couple of days, with access to power and water. We arrived early, and had our choice of sites, picking one beneath one of the few trees, at least giving us a modicum of shade. The staff were friendly, but not overly helpful, and the amenities could do with a revamp. They are reasonably clean however, and serve their purpose. There is a beautiful pool available to guests as well, although I don't think they heat the water. Despite the high air temperature, the pool was icy cold. It was well worth a dunk to wash off days worth of outback dust and grime though. The roadhouse is situated just a short drive north of Tennant Creek, and for anyone wishing to visit the creek, I would recommend staying here. It has a much nicer feel about it than in town. Being a roadhouse, there are meals available, as well as a bar and I am led to believe some pokies (slot machines). We didn't try the meals, bar or machines out though.

Staff are polite, but not helpful. You got the feeling that you are putting them out by being there. Maybe it had been a long week for the young girl and gentleman . The accommodation is very basic. We got a cabin at the very back which was very nice and very compact. But the other accommodation on offer made us feel lucky we had booked and got the cabin where we did. This was away from the truck noise as well. Please also be aware that the water pressure is a trickle in the shower and the water is brown. Ladies, this is not the stop to enjoy the shower or wash your hair.
The positives: good feed, basic menu but good. For those with pets, this place is pet friendly.
We sat on the outside tables at the side of the bar and watched the sunset and then the trucks roll by. This does beat most options in tennant creek for the basic room and price.

Room Tip: Beware- petrol is too expensive fill up either before/after at tennant creek and save some dollars...

Having read previous posts, I have to say I think some perspective is needed. We are staying at Three Ways tonight ... It's a stop between other places - campground is good, facilities are worn but clean, you can get a simple but safe meal, petrol is expensive - just like the rest of the NT. Enjoy!

After a long drive from Mt Isa we stopped for try evening and got a room, three single beds was perfect for three adults. But be warned one of the beds had wheels an our 18 year old son got he giggles and as the room was not quiet level his bed started moving towards the door, which unfortunately made him giggle more thus expediting the thump into the wall....at least the door was not open....cause then I would have cacked myself.

This is a good spot to unwind and the food is dependent on which backpacker is cooking. The sheets were clean the air conditioner worked and above all the shower was hot or cold. Good value for the middle of nowhere. But fill up before you go to bed because if you want an early start the bowser opens after 6.

Stayed here for convenience sake as I didn't want to travel the extra distance to Tennant Creek just to backtrack the next morning to get to the Barkly Highway. Points for being pet friendly (pets not allowed inside accommodation). Stayed in one of their motel rooms which are basically 2 rows of 'transportable buildings' with about 6 motel rooms in each building all connected by a verandah (and according to the staff the motel rooms are a lot better than the cabins). I booked a twin and was disappointed to be allocated a double. The verandah did have a ramp for disabled access as well as multiple stair accesses. The room was not very clean; the bed spread was stained and in need of a wash, the benches needed a wipe down and the tea/coffee facilities were icky and in need of cleaning & replenishing. We ordered takeaway main meals from the roadhouse which was quite acceptable. Meals were cooked quickly and were quite large. Staff were a little casual but other than that ok. The layout of the accommodation area was random and not very obvious (lots of buildings/dongas willy-nilly around the place). If you stay here keep in mind it is a roadhouse and not a resort and that's exactly what you get.
