“Expected a bit more for money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

Set in a caravan park environment in the remote wilderness adjoining the Katherine Gorge, I expected a bit more for the price of the accommodation. The ‘chalets’, using the word very lightly, were basic aluminium Jayco demountable cabins with enough room for two small bedrooms at one end, a tiny bathroom and small living area and kitchen. Having said that though the kitchen was reasonably well appointed with facilities to self-cater. The unit was quite clean and the surroundings pleasantly shady.

While largely a campground with caravans and tents, an adjacent area has a few chalets. We stayed in a chalet. It was simple, but very comfortable. There is a dining area adjacent to the campground. The menu is limited but completely adequate.

We stayed for only one night in October, as it was very quiet & not in the height of the season as expected some of the amenities we closed & lookout points were out of bounds for renovations. This is understandable for maintenance upkeep is necessary. Nonetheless we hired canoes for the morning from the nearby hire & paddled up the amazing gorge. Also took the 8 gorge scenic helicopter flight with the landing upgrade for $195 for roughly half hour (they say it is 18 minutes but you get longer) the heli flight was amazing & well worth it. I'd recommend nitmuluk to anyone visiting the region, stay clear of Katherine town itself nothing but rude (white) locals with the impression they are blaming the tourists for their misery!

I was looking for accommodation near the Katherine gorge, so I could take the 9am tour. I found the Chalets, although I thought a little expensive and small they had everything needed for a comfortable night sleep and looking around the alternatives in Katherine a great option.

The food served in the booking centre was OK, but nothing to write home about.

We stayed in a chalet for 4 nights and had a great time. Our place was fairly new, had 2 bedrooms, and although smallish, had everything we could want out there including air-conditioning and unbelievably comfortable beds. Breakfast was included in the price and other than the odd stale croissants served every morning, was varied and ample enough to get us launched for the day. The campground itself is peaceful with wildlife coming up to the door and it seemed pretty well equipped with facilities. The staff were wonderful in every respect. When the power in Katherine was cut - including the park - a staff member appeared at our door to offer us dinner in case the mains power was not restored in time. As it happened, power was restored to the entire park later but we really appreciated the professional attitude and willingness to act quickly. We took the Timeless Land Gorge Tour which was a bit long for a hot day but stunning nonetheless. The highlight of this part of our trip was a 90 minute Helicopter Tour of Rock Art sites some of which are estimated at c.45,000 years old. Our pilot, Alistair was a total pro flying us in, guiding us to the sites and explaining the significance of the art. I will always remember this tour and would like to express my gratitude to all concerned in enabling us to visit and view this national treasure. We'd love to return.

Room Tip: Don't stay in a tent or motorhome unless you can stay cool or the season allows.

We arrived after 5pm to find that check-in area (visitors centre) was closed. There was a mobile number supplied on a sign outside, which was great until we realised we had no mobile phone reception (Optus and 3 did not work there at all). No drama though pay phone was right there which came in very handy. We headed down to the pool area where we picked up our key for the chalet - which is a normal caravan park cabin. The cabin was fine very cosy with 4 of us. Just note that although you have a television you don't receive Free to Air Channels. We got vouchers for breakfast which was quite basic but sufficient. We hired canoes for the day and did the dinner night cruise all was great just be aware you cover the same gorges. We stayed 2 nights and for the ease of what we wanted to do it was fine. Please note that you should stop off at Katherine at the supermarket if you want supplies before heading to the grounds as there is a 35 - 40 minute drive to Nitmiluk
