“Convenient & comfortable enough”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

We arrived after 5pm to find that check-in area (visitors centre) was closed. There was a mobile number supplied on a sign outside, which was great until we realised we had no mobile phone reception (Optus and 3 did not work there at all). No drama though pay phone was right there which came in very handy. We headed down to the pool area where we picked up our key for the chalet - which is a normal caravan park cabin. The cabin was fine very cosy with 4 of us. Just note that although you have a television you don't receive Free to Air Channels. We got vouchers for breakfast which was quite basic but sufficient. We hired canoes for the day and did the dinner night cruise all was great just be aware you cover the same gorges. We stayed 2 nights and for the ease of what we wanted to do it was fine. Please note that you should stop off at Katherine at the supermarket if you want supplies before heading to the grounds as there is a 35 - 40 minute drive to Nitmiluk

We had a motorhome and the campsites were nothing more than a dust bowl. Terribly overcrowded like sardines, noisy and very uncomfortable. Wouldn't recommend and wouldn't stay there again. We were supposed to stay 2 nights and shipped out after the first night. We did the breakfast gorge tour which was amazing and when we returned to the site in the searing heat there was no way we could stay there for the day so we left.

Room Tip: Spend the money and go to a Chalet as this seems a better experience than our van site

After our stay in Kakadu NP, we had 2 night in a Nitmiluk chalet. It was a very nice experience: the chalet was very clean, we had full cooking equipments, surrondings were quiet, got free breakfast and people were friendly. This was a perfect place to discover Katherine Gorge (by kano ;) )

We stayed at a powered site for two nights in our camper van. The sites were fairly close together - something to bear in mind if you like your space. Yes, the sites were "red and dusty", but this seems a common theme in the Northern Territory!

Toilet and shower facilities were reasonably clean, and there were free laundry facilities, which was a great help.

We found the pool area very satisfactory. The pool was clean, and the pool area in general was very well kept. The kiosk was also very convenient for a cool drink! There is a toilet/shower block right next to the pool area, so it was convenient for showers afterward.

Over-all, we were happy with the facilities on offer at Nitmiluk. It was, of course, the best location for Katherine Gorge. As we wanted to do one of the longer walks in the area (the Butterfly gorge walk), this place was ideal for us.

We stayed here for one night. We arrived 10 minutes after 5pm to find the visitors centre closed so we just drove into the campsite. There seemed to be no organisation within the site so we just parked in an area that looked free and had power. The site was expensive; the only benefit of the campsite was that they offer free cold water washing machines. I think there are cheaper places to stay around Katherine and then do a day tour to Katherine Gorge. We wouldn't go back there.

Stayed one night late August with two kids in two tents in the "tent village" as the chalets were full 3 months ago when we booked. The tents are very poor value for money: 240$ for bad quality mattress (basic foam), nothing else than two beds in the tent, deposits are required for the sheets and blankets (worth less than the deposit i think), which you have to carry from the reception to the tent. The reception is in the shop, staff there didn't even have the basic knowledge of the area, and i was asked to go to the tourist centre for basic info on a walk around the camp.

Yes, the price included a dinner, which we had by the pool, which is so full of chemicals that i couldn't see through and found the smell/taste of water very unpleasant, my skin felt itchy after a few minutes and i couldn't find a shower on site. Had to shower in the toilet/shower, where there was a long queue. The dinner voucher is not valid for everything and i had to wait twice for a simple meal because of miscommunication between the grumpy cook and the young lady who was doing her best to cope with the crowd (and the cook).

The campground is small, it was packed that night, at least there was space between our tents because the campervans on the campground were so close they looked like one building. There was entertainment: music and a loud movie for kids on a giant screen (great!), but it did get quiet after a while.

The breakfast cruise was ok but in my view it is not comparable to the quality of the experience on the Yellow Water billabong in Kakadu. It was commercial, with a speech delivered in a passion-less fast mode. Canoe renting, well, deposits are required again, and the clock starts ticking from the time you pay, even if you forgot a cap in the car. Our best experience in Nitmiluk was the helicopter tour, very nice even if it shows that beyond the gorges there is nothing but flat land as far as you can see!
