We returned here three times during our four days in Kakadu; just loved it for the scenic views and the birdlife.
As someone with mobility challenges, I particularly appreciated the ease of access. You drive right up to the billabong and can view it from several spots along the road. From each access spot, it's a short stroll to the edge of the water (as close as is safe!) There are picnic benches for resting and/eating. The path along the road side of the billabong is short, easy and flat, doable even for those with knee problems.
Big bonus: there were NO bugs here when we visited in early August, even at sunset.

Bird and insect life abound. The place to go to get the iconic shot of Nourlangie Rock. Beware off crocodiles!

Just happened to head down the short sealed road to the billabong, after visiting Nourlangie Rock site. Water level was low, but that is normal for the dry season, saw a mob of Whistling Ducks, a few Magpie Geese and up one end of the billabong was a large wild boar 'rooting' around for food in the water. Glad we called in there at that moment, definitely worth the short drive in and what you will see is down to luck on the day.

Just a short drive off the Kakadu highway, about 20 kms out of Cooinda, Nourlangie rock art is wonderful..but we really were taken aback but this enchanting spot. Great little areas in the shade all around the billabong with a picnic table at each, easy parking and accessibility. (Do not swim of course as its Kakadu and you'll be munched on by a croc)... But the bird life and just natural wonder of this place is just incredible. 5 stars all the way and well worth figuring into ur itinerary as a lunch spot :)

It may just have been down to the time of year that we visited (dry season), but there was no real wildlife to speak of. Also no 'bush colours' to see (wildflowers, lillies, etc). You did get a good view of Nourlangie though.
